W1ll14m,
Making slow progress in leaning QGIS but have been very busy. Question I'm working with the latest version of QGIS and seem to be able to plug in the ESRI Terrain Maps have you used the ESRI Maps at all? Are they useful?

Oh BTW I saw what you mean about the OSM Maps. An entire estuary area was missing near Brunswick, GA. I guess you get what you pay for [:)]

W1ll14m,
So this is where I am right now, baby steps as QGIS is not like ArcMap! I've even created the Hex grid in QGIS and imported into ArcMap at one point. I'd like to try to mimic your process as much as possible. I created these with the ESRI maps, first topo...

Going to play with the SRTM2/3 Data next any chance you could share your topo layers with me. I've played with the SRTM data in MicroDEM a little bit but only enough to be familar with it. Like I said, baby steps...
Thanks for your help.

RE: Hexdraw templates for the new style maps.
So if I did this right that is the Kassel SRTM3 51N 9E sector in UTM 32N. Now while the On the Fly projection is much easier than ArcMap I'm stumped on creating a Style Layer to stretch the raster file????? Even if I did figure it out (which I have too) I'm not sure the values you are using?
Again thanks for your help, sorry its slow progress but work and life have been very difficult lately (besides its a hobby and supposed to be fun [:D] [8D] )...

RE: Hexdraw templates for the new style maps.
Hi,
you probably want to render the elevation map as (up to 10) discrete colors, matching what the FCRS map values editor expects.
You can set it up like this (see image):

And here's a QGIS style file, elevations 100+ in steps of 50 which has the correct values. You can apply it to the layer, and edit where applicable.

RE: Hexdraw templates for the new style maps.
William,
Thanks will give her a try. I'm assuming you're making shapefiles for the features? There's a lot here I don't understand but I'm slowly making SOME progress. I've learned a lot from you so far but I'm finding QGIS to be very different from ArcMap and it's tripping me up.
And then it looks like my daughter might have gotten a virus onto the computer I'm using for QGIS. Scanning it now. It never ends...

Well thanks for your help. My friend has my "QGIS/family computer" and tells me we'll likely have to take it back to factory settings So much for McAfee and Malwarebytes! Might try again after I get it back...

Hello, any one could provide a QGIS version of map-making tutorial?

The best information on QGIS use is in this thread. William and perhaps even Beachinnole can answer questions on the process they use. William is currently out on vacation, so it may be a while before he can get back to answer questions.

I feel your pain. Got a computer behind me being slowly loaded up and configured to replace the box in front of me and it's a ton of work.

OK, so I got the STRM for the Kassel area with William's style file loaded and a 500m Grid and ESRI Transport loaded on this one. Is this the right UTM projection as there seem to be two for UTM_32?

W1ll14m,
So thanks for your help so far, It's gotten me this far, but now I'm totally lost!
As shape files? Do you do one shapefile for roads, one for a rivers, Do you have a template for them?
If I may there seem to be about 3 or 4 (or so) guys who would be using QGIS if they had a tutorial and could follow along. I'm trying but if there were a tutorial you would have a force multiplier and maybe some guys who could help with maps for Southern Storm.

RE: Hexdraw templates for the new style maps.
Does ESRI transport data only covers the European region? Are there any similar road data for the other part of the Earth? Drawing roads is sometimes not that easy

Yes, I draw the map elements as separate shape files, and have separate styles for them.
After drawing, there is a complicated step to set-up a print manager with the right settings and coordinates so it spits outs a bitmap at the right scale, and with the QGis hex grid matching the FCRS expected hex grid.
I'll be writing a brief manual to cover this all this week, and run it by you, Harry, exsonic01 and whomever else shows up in these posts.
