Thanks, a lot of great feedback!
I'm sure in large part my views come from being limited to Solitaire, but I LOVE the idea of slowing down the Axis, especially the first year before General Weather has his say. A few well placed Forts (with INF on them) can really help put the brakes on the blitzkrieg. Assuming they are placed well, far enough back to be at a point where the Axis supply line will be stretched, and integrated into a line including cities and natural defense points.
For example, a REALLY lucky Axis getting in range of Moscow might have to go through a series of fortified defensive lines before getting to try for a death blow to the capital of Communism - and this delay might be the deciding factor.
It seems like it was the case historically, and I like the option now that I've tried it. Admittedly, I've only tried this once - Solitaire - but it seems to hold promise.

I think I have never bought fortifications except once, for Gibraltar and was for nothing.

But it seems most interesting as a not so expensive way to defend the Dnepropetrovsk-Kiev line through making this cities harder to take, with just a few fortresses. Not to speak of spending a bit more and create a Nikolayev-Kiev line and make the GE spend an O- chit...Although to be correctly done this would need 13 BPs. A fortress side costs 1 ¿right?

Why was it for nothing? Did the Allies crack a fortified Gibraltar or bypassed it? I'm a little curious...

They invaded Spain, but they simply used a eng div for the fort, I think. with a full stack with armor, plus naval bombardment, and luftwaffe, they had a reasonable proportion + bonuses, but a retreat result was enough for them, for I had no retreat.

No. It costs 2 build points and take 5 turns.

Jeez!!!

That's why I didn't use them, for sure.
