I did it again - left my CL and DDs on patrol/do not retire when they went into Wunpuko.
The "more to come" that Mogami was waiting for did not happen. Tanaka's surface group had system problems which slowed them down a knot or two so they were not in attack position and had to retire.
Yamaguchi and co. were late because they had fueled but not restocked their ammo. Mogami got his APs in and out so fast that there was nothin left to attack so they too pulled back.
If I were in charge of the Japanes forces in WWII the U.S. wouldn't even had to use an A-bomb.

Yeow. Ordered Rock to dig in. Level 9 forts there. 2 Bde of 6th Div marching up from Brisbane.
Moved every bomber (except heavies) from SOPAC to Brisbane. B-17's moved to LV.
Another enemy TF is up by Cairns. I am sending half my small boys there. The other half are
standing by with reaction on at TV. Going to be exciting next 3 weeks. After that my CV
will move over and clear out the enemy ships so the 2 SWPAC divisions SOPAC currently has
can move home. (collecting them now. 3 of the 6 Bde/RCT are resting/refitting at Noumea)
I thought the enemy would make a try for one of the SWPAC auto cities. Just got caught busy
with evac from Lea Lea. (those units will prove important now. Subs picking up some of the remaining
500 men today. The rescued units allow me to fly the one remaining full size 7th Div Bde
to Cooktown. I can allow the enemy to land unopposed. But in the end Cooktown and Cairns are
not auto victory bases.

Stupid stupid, I go after a lousey sub and let the darn CV swat me.
--------------------------------------------------
The real stupidity was the CAG letting the aircraft go on a milk run and get all fatigued over some SCs and PGs. The pilots all had a great party that night but were still in bed the next morning when they should have been on the flight deck ready to fly. We were very fortunate that there were no enemy CVs in the area to take advantage of the slumbering pilots.
We got closer to the Rock than I thought we would before we were discovered. Without air cover the attempt at Cairns did not last long enough to draw off much of the enemy air assets.
