Congrats to both of you! If you think WITP-AE is a great adventure just wait until you get into the joy and consternation of having children!

It's a heck of a thing to find out that my partner just became a Daddy on a AAR! [X(] He apologized for being delayed for less than 24 hours on a turn! [:D] Amazing! Congratulations!

When we do our next turn , we need to talk. Never mind so much dedication to our game. The princess comes 1st! [:-] And of course her lovely mom! [:D]

That is absolutely not true! I sent you guys an email with her picture the day after she came, saying that I invited a new player. Neither you or Ed reacted. [:D]

Shows how much attention you guys pay to my emails. [:D]

The trip was so not long so much as it was tense. The waters of the strait teemed with Japanese submarines, and it was taken for granted that the exists from the protected and sub-netted anchorages around Sabang were under constant surveillance.

As it happened, no submarine appeared. But the dark outlined of land became progressively more pronounced. The positions of all the targets had been painstakingly plotted, mapped and photographed several months earlier, when the Japanese attempted to stage a large number of aircraft from Georgetown.

At that time, not only was the base and its environs heavily bombed, and reconnaissance aircraft photographed every square inch of land, but units of the RN had come in and bombarded the island and its airfield. Just as it was going now.

The Japanese were back. The battles lines appeared SE of Sabang just after 0200. Now they were positioning themselves comfortably, and settling in for a shoot.

The first victims were the two mine sweepers which vainly attempted to flee the target area before they were detected. Both went down within minutes under a hail of shells.

The attackers then switched to what was apparently their primary target, the airfield. This time, however, the field had been largely cleared in anticipation of just such an event and the remaining aircraft were in covered revetments. The groups still lost several aircraft (and it would have been strange if they had not, with the worlds biggest warship sending in shells the size of Fords), one to a direct hit on the revetment, and two to a fire caused by the destruction of a fuel truck left out in the open. All most other aircraft received some degree of shrapnel damage, although at least a handful were available in a flyable state by morning, after rudimentary repairs by the ground crews.

What was not in a usable state, however, was the airstrip, with all runways and most of the taxiways holed and pockmarked by 18, 16 and 8” shells.

The resistance was token, as always. Although when the attackers became too cocky and approached within coast gun range, one of the Indian crews planted a shell amidships of a heavy cruiser. Having been properly chastised, the Japanese puled back, and shorty after began to withdraw.

Foochow was an inferno again. For the fourth straight day, waves of bombers crossed from Formosa to bomb the recently captured town. The small, rear area garrison unit of several thousand soldiers had absolutely no means of dealing with, contesting or repelling the attack. All they could do was, yet again, dive for cover, pray for salvation and watch their equipment get blown sky high. Once the attack was over, the troops had to climb out, salvage what was salvageable, and try to continue to do their duty. But with every passing day, the task was becoming more difficult. More and more troops were becoming non-combat capable. Some instances of desertion were appearing.

Vee after vee of Betty bombers approached from beyond the horizon, flying straight over the luchly wooded green hills, almost 70 in all, escorted by half a dozen Zeros.

But if the Japanese expected the Banda Aseh airfield to be undefended, they were in for a surprise.

20 Hurricanes were in the air, well above the approaching Japanese, and took them on with gusto. Two of the escorting Zeros went down first, scythed out of the sky by diving Hurricanes of 136 Squadron.

The Hurricanes dove past the powerless and now reduced escort and slashed into the bomber formations. Three of the twin-engined birds fell flaming out of the sky. A dozen more staggered, trailed smoke, or fell out of formation due to some degree of damage, but continued to fly.

But the bomber's ordeal was not over yet. As the formations approached the green hills immediately around Banda Aseh, the anti aircraft guns cleverly camouflaged in the greenery spoke out. Fifteen Betties were blown out of the sky as they were forced to fly steady for their attack run.

The raid did not end peacefully for the defenders either. Additional holes and craters appeared all over the field and its environs. Even an unlucky Vengeance was blown to bits by a stray bomb from a Betty which missed its target.

Overall, however, The Japanese would not be congratulating themselves on their success tonight.

The southern coast of Japan was quiet and serene at night. No lights shone from the seaside villages bordering the wide mouth of Kiisudo Strait.

But the American submarine and her radar had no trouble spotting the medium-sized merchantman as is snuck along the coast.

Four torpedoes fired from the surfaced submarine ran straight and true to impact in the ship's side, a sad reminder of the frustration that American submarine captains had learned to live with, when one fired 4 fish in the hopes that at least one would go where it was supposed to.

The fire and activity on deck, suggested that while the crew may have been caught unawares, they were certainly going to try their hardest to save their ship.

The 3” shell that slammed into the superstructure, as a pointed reminder that the enemy was still there, and the doomed ship had no escort, seemed to finally break the back of organized command on the ship, and Japanese sailors began to jump into the sea.

The first report was sent in the early hours of night by a Dutch submarine, which sighted several columns of warships attempting to scoot along the Sumatran coast. And although the KXIII was not able to get in position for an attack, having being chased off by a Japanese destroyer, she did relay her sighting up the chain of command.

Said chain worked flawlessly, for once, disseminating the data to other commands and headquarters. One of these headquarters took particular interest in the report. It forwarded it to a task force which was located roughly 200 miles SW of the sighting, and of which the Japanese command likely had no knowledge, or they would have hardly taken the risk to launch their operation.

In the early hours of dawn, as the sun began its climb into the sky, an aerial armada of dark blue aircraft crossed over the jungle of Sumatra and approached the Straights of Malacca just north of Palau Rupat Island, or roughly where the Dutch skipper's speed and heading estimates would have placed the target.

As it happened, the enemy columns had just made a course change east to skirt this island southbound.

Both collections of war machines looked incredibly impressive in their own way. But one one of them would emerge victorious today. A sky empty of escorting Japanese aircraft none too subtly suggested which one it might be.

The torment of the Japanese fleet lasted the entire day. Dozens of American carrier dive bombers would arrive over the target, form into their carrousels, and dive on the the practically helpless ships, which only a few days ago had ruled the Strait with an iron fist.

Dozens of bomb hits left thick columns of smoke to mark the track of the Japanese columns, and the burning, listing ships that had fallen out of the columns testified to their success.

If it was any consolation, the proximity of the Japanese to land severely hampered American torpedo bombers. But dusk saw several Japanese heavy cruisers and one battleship in serious condition and unlikely to survive the night.

Honestly guys, I think that pasting all this combat report text really takes away from what I was looking to do. I'll stop doing it for now, although I may insert certain tidbits for clarity.

Oh my, what a slaughter for the IJN! Some admirals should pay a visit to seppuku facilities.

Re combat reports, sadly this forum does not have

functionality. You can attach text of the combat report as a file to the message. Would not mess with writing and provide some details for those who want to know

Gotta disagree here - I read your vignette description first and was expecting maybe three or four damaged cruisers. The CR shows that all 10 of the big IJN CAs in that TF took significant damage and as many as six may have sunk! Japan only has 14 of the big CAs so the losses will be crippling. This is almost as good as decimating the carrier fleet (which will be desperate for AA escorts now!).

Well done on the ambush! [&o]

Actually the CV fleet has already been decimated, as has the BB fleet. And the submarine fleet is "not happy". I think it's time to go after AO's (that he's using as regular tankers) and DD's. [:)]

Actually, "decimated" is not the correct word, as we've killed far more than 1/10th. Slaughtered? Mangled? Devastated? (yeah, that's the word). [:D]

Well, yes. But it was never the intention to give a complete picture from God's pov. [;)] The pilots would not have been able to give an accurate assessment of the damage, only that "I scored a hit" and "ship was seen burning".

Which was almost exclusively Steve's doing, btw. I think I accounted for a few BBs.
