Tracking Spreadsheets

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

May be useful for any one else going through this thread - go to this thread for a big picture with a big arrow pointing to the export function. tm.asp?m=4363500&mpage=1&key=look%2Csav ... r&#4363868

I know the export was added in a recent version

Happy to see someone put that function to use.
What I would like to see is a tool that would take a collection of such files and produce some nice stats & graphs in a PDF.

Maybe even someone could make a tool which would make a mini map showing positions of forces. I did such thing once, for HPS games:

If you join such images from every turn in one gif you get a nice animation of moving and fighting forces.

In PMs with Ledo I suggested amalgamating our spreadsheets into something generic that could be hosted and used (or adapted) by others for their own use. I am interested in such projects of automation - and of getting into geodata! I am guessing a few others have indicated their interest?

I believe you need to involve some kind of programming language to produce more fancy output from data than spreadsheets will allow. Maybe there is someone amongst WitE players with such skills?

You could use the spreadsheets as a front end or data feed for something more fancy. The great thing about spreadsheets, if you think of it as programming by the end user, is that many people are happy to use them or adapt them if they are just formulas. If you get in to pivot tables the numbers goes down. And get as far as say visual basic and the numbers drop right off. If you had spreadsheets that all could use as a front end separate from what else it would be used for I think that would be best. When it comes to GIS stuff I have only used some of the open source programs available- happy to contribute but I guess there are some real experts lurking!

Must... resist... temptation... to write such mapping software. I have too much on my plate...
And yet, it would take no more than few hours for a basic version...

That map looks fantastic. I'd love to see that.

Too bad. What's holding you from updating?

Since it's tab separated you should be able to open it in Notepad, select all, copy, and paste directly into Excel.

Since it's tab separated you should be able to open it in Notepad, select all, copy, and paste directly into Excel.

Depending on your preferences all the data might appear in one column - but you can highlight it and look for a drop down menu item called "Text to columns" or "Parse" in some programs.

Usually you can open the file directly from within in a spreadsheet program, even old excel - and it may even ask you while it opens whether to use comma or tab separated values.

"Too bad. What's holding you from updating?"

Thanks Moravel. From what I've been reading you're adding a lot to the game.

From the posts I was reading it seemed early on that v1.11 supercharged the Germans and I'm in late '42 of a campaign game as the Russians. Didn't need supercharged Germans. But now sounds like it's somewhat better. Though something up thread seems to say there could be problems changing versions in the middle of a game. What's your advice

Not really, except you will miss some enchancements which come from or rely on new data to function properly. Of course balance can be altered. It's not a problem if you play alone, with multiple MP usually all players have to be updated to newest patch, or go to great lengths to play each game using separate version.

Does anyone else use spreadsheet tracking like this?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oO1n_7 ... TBYeT/view

I am very interested in using these spreadsheets but I don't know how to use them properly.
I don't know how to properly import it from "Command Reports" to Excel so that the data is displayed correctly. I know how to export correctly from game "Command Report's" and get .csv files. But how do then copy it correctly into spreadsheets (link above), I don't know.
Can you help me in any way?
Thanks

I have started to write a c # application to load the exported files into an application.
(WITE2).

My initial screen shows the HQ and its subordinates.

Clicking on an HQ in that list will give its subordinates.
My initial aims:

1. to identify HQ and its underlings.
2. To easily see the sub units of an HQ (initially to see leaders and identify best HQ for units).

2 issues so far.
1. No unique identifier for units. This is a problem if a unit changes name (eg becomes guards).
2. No inbuilt calculation of command points / max in the file, so would have to code that (Shouldn't be very hard, but ...)

3. Got distracted by squirrels.....

Also load all the leaders into the file to easily find the best unassigned leaders.

Would ideally like to put a treeview so I can see at a glance the organisation tree, and identify spare capacity / overcapacity.
-Playing as russia it would be nice to be able to identify if I can remove HQ and still maintain the armygroup command limit - esp after guards hq increase capacity.

Would in theory like to have a user screen so I can write in Left / right bounds and the role of each. This would be made more complicated by no unique ID, as loading a new turn the HQ names may not match.

If I could then load in each turn, and save the data, I could then have a turn by turn history.

Not looked at air yet.

Was also considering a Support page, to list artillery / mortars / construction etc by HQ so I could identify where my support units are concentrated and who doesn't have enough.
