Does me. I stopped playing it for that reason.

Many people here will say graphics don't matter. Its all about the game.

but its not 1997 anymore. And they do matter. Not for the game, which is fine with what it has. But because every other game that is played has better graphics. And so this one always looks ancient.

Considering the fact that I do play both Seekrieg V and Command at Sea using graph paper, crayons and a compass (instead of using painstakingly painted and costly miniatures), I really don't see why "graphics" should dictate the quality of a naval game. Last time I checked, "Command" had... uhm... 1994 graphics; are you suggesting that we should sink it too...?

Graphics are nice, but I prefer Action Stations! over SES Jutland just like I'd rather have steak over sizzle. Long time ago, I had this miniature game about ancient combat. We didn't use miniatures, we cut out paper rectangles and marked them up. No worries about buying and storing miniatures. Or breaking them. Or losing them. Or some sore loser throwing them across the room.

Seekrieg V

Seekrieg V I have too. And use miniatures.

Its a given on any PC wargaming thread that "graphics don't matter."

Which I used to agree with. But now.
Hearts of Iron doesn't skimp. Never has.
FOG II looks very good.

The product has competition.

What I am saying is that I already have RTW. Played about 30 -40 hours. Liked it. Appreciated it.
No longer play it.

Because ? What can be the reason? There is no other game like it.
But i'm not tempted to fire it up at all.

following the mention of Seekrieg recently here, i found a nice boxed copy of Seekrieg 4 on Ebay - although its not he latest version, i was just so impressed with someones account of a game of it, it made me want to learn and play it - though i need to get some miniatures i am thinking perhaps of making some out of card - maybe composed of 4 intersecting pieces to give the vessels some 3dimensionality

In my defeated quest to buy a "Fighting Wings" title online this weekend, I then decided to order the below title which might be of interest to some...

Compass Games South China Sea:

Will be at my door sometime next week.

In a way, It´s the pre-sequel to "Breaking the Chains" (same designer).

The precursor to Rule the Waves was 'Steam and Iron'. This might appeal to people that are not really into designing ships and acquiring tech.

It's basically the same naval combat engine as Rule the waves; they have Steam and Iron and also a stand alone Steam and Iron: Russo Japanese war.

Alas, maybe they should have skimped on the graphics and worked a bit more on the AI - like "You should not be able to conquer Europe playing as Portugal..."

That's why I stopped playing.

Hi,

Although this will be my second Compass game, other is "A Las Barricadas" (Spanish Civil War/Tactical) from the War Storm Series, I would say Compass Games puts out some good stuff, and usually geard towards the inovation side. Quality is very good I would say, although some complaints in the past with the maps of there magazine titles.

IMHO the "War Storm Series" (WSS) is one hell of a series. It holds a very good tactical system that for me beats some of the heavy weigths like LnL Tactical, and on par with with the Panzer Grenadier series (I havent played any PG titles). The folks behind the WSS have recently moved to there own company now and are working on a new title for the WSS, "Normandy, the beggining of the end". They are a Spanish team with Nicolas Eskubi (art work/designer) within the team. The company is now known as "Draco Ideas"...

WSS:

Besides the WSS of which Iam familiar, Compass Games is pulling out some neat stuff, like "The African Campaign Designers Edition" remake of a classic, or Brezhev´s War: Nato vs Warsaw Pact in Germany 1980. Today I will receive South China Sea via courier, and I think Iam gonna leave all my other projects aside and jump on this one.

Usually when "Chewie Matt" plays a game (video post of Breaking the Chains), or Gillbert Collins plays, that is a good sign that is a worth while game.

Compass Games is up there with all the heavy-weights, only cavet I have is that there on the expensive side on some games. You can download the manuals of there games from the Compass Games site, if you want to get an Idea of what the game is all about.

A side from this and back to the topic...

I was looking at the "Modren Naval Conflicts: 1970" by William Miller (Rule the Waves), and it seem´s that its in-between the "Harpoon 4" series and "Seekrieg", so it might be interesting to check out. You can find a PDF version quite cheap at The WargamingVault..

Don´t expect fancy art work, but system seems solid!

Has any one tried it?
