RE: Periscope won't work - and diesel/battery
Merci TyphoonFr, je suis francais moi aussi
Interesting. I didn't notice this info. I think that in my case the 'Muavenet' was coming from NE with a course of 215. So 'Front' would apply, then it makes sense. I will try to maneuver and approach from side and see if it would detect her with the scope at 10 nm.
Regarding the diesel so it's probably not a bug ...
When you say
Thanks
In the "Signature" section of the Database viewers, you will find its range of visual detection (Front: 8.51nm, Side: 14.47nm)

Do you mean in the game or in general, in real life too ?A diesel submarine automatically starts its diesel engines and no setting allows to stop at periscope depth and surface
Thanks

In real life ,I do not think commanders start their diesel engines every time they use their periscope.

TyphoonFr not only speaks English well, but speaks submarine even better.

yes, but in this case the question is different. It's precisely about 'not' starting the diesel at PD and stay on the electric to be silent. I had the impression you said it's impossible in real life too ?ORIGINAL: TyphoonFr

Not impossible at all in real life. Just don't think the game has a provision for it. Not necessarily a bug, but maybe a feature request. Not something you'd need often because you shouldn't be at periscope depth anywhere near the enemy (I may have said this before
)

At periscope depth or on the surface you can not be only on batteries and diesel engines run continuously.

In the novel Red Storm Rising (a must read for every CMANO player) they say a sub commander in a hostile area would visually scan the surface with periscope for 6 seconds at most. In CMANO sadly there is no way to lower the periscope so PD is infeasible in most situations, I didn't know it also started the diesels automatically and this only makes it worse. With a nuclear sub, if you really want you can use PD as you would use a "raise periscope" button, using that 6-second window for reference before going to shallow again. It should be enough to catch something on ESM at the very least.
If you want to understand sub operations as modelled in CMANO from a more hands-on approach, you could try Dangerous Waters (buy it on sale on Steam) and you'll see how hard it is to see and identify stuff with periscope, even with FLIR and all the other enhancements applied on the camera, and how much (relatively) easier it is to do the same thing with sonar.

Would be good if Dev could step in and clarify if automatic recharging at periscope depth is WAD or bug.

In Northern Fury- X-Ray station, I often have Trafalgar at periscope depth, to get ESM bearings of Russian ships. Mainly because it's torpedoes are total shite...[:D]

Interesting comment. Thanks.
BTW I do have DW for a long time but I have never been able to really learn it. It's a very complex sim. But one day I will ... coincidentally, I precisely reinstalled it yesterday because I wanted to give it a try at PD and also to get the manual which is a nice big fat ebook well written as long as I remember.
I watched this DW periscope tutorial>

Considering that you can't raise and lower individual masts (snorkel, ESM, periscope etc.), which are themselves a pretty big nuisance when trying to stay stealthy, I think it's most likely WAD. As it was said before, doctrine only tells the sub when to go to PD to recharge. Remember that CMANO isn't a submarine/flight/ship simulator, is a warfare simulator, a wargame. Even though we are used to micromanaging units and the latest DLC focuses a lot on detailed single-unit scenarios, the core of the game is missions and tactics, where units are supposed to be left on their own devices with minimal player input besides basic mission parameters. A sub assigned to a sea control mission would occasionaly go to PD, one assigned to ASW would never go there and so onORIGINAL: Sardaukar

Well, this seems a very valid point to me. CMANO is definitely not a sub/airplane sim and these there are by far better simulators around the place (DW, Falcon 4 and successors). So we should rather be thinking in what's important for the game as a wargame. Improved subs model or improved warfare ? Like better mission planners etc. Very valid question indeed. I tend to agree with Grazyn on this one.ORIGINAL: Grazyn
