Does the 5th Mech have any M109's or other 155mm arty with 4 hex range? You need something that outranges the NVA arty. Or you just have to suck up the air losses so you can reduce the NVA HQs and arty in range of your ground combats.
Something most people don't realize is that you can enter the DMZ and even the first couple of hexes into North Vietnam. You have to go 3 or 4 hexes into NVM to trigger the automatic loss for the US. The railroad engineers and HQ/arty are the most important NVA targets for you. When the NVA start fielding their front arty units (ranges up to 5 and 7 hexes) you will need the Army's 175mm guns that can reach 10 hexes at reduced strength. Until then the NVA arty will punish you until you at least get in some US divisions and their big guns or the Marine Amphibious Group which has a number of M109s and long ranged towed 155mm.
As in the actual war northern Quang Tri will involve a lot of artillery warfare on both sides.
Mmmm yeah I think a test incursion into North Vietnam may be a good idea, I will have to re read the documentation aswellORIGINAL: Narses
Page 14 of the word document for this scenario addresses the DMZ.
You can absolutely put Allied units IN the DMZ. The question is which DMZ line is the "border". The northern one or the southern one? The text says two hexes north of the border.
I recall deploying US units north of the northern DMZ line to surround NVA units.....I just can't recall how far north is safe.
It is worth testing to be sure especially before playing against a live opponent.
