Adventures in Belgium with Brian
I'm trying to encourage Brian to post in this thing.

Here's how the first combat round went. The American units are dug-in and I don't
have any air support to give the ground pounders and some of the losses are higher
than I'm comfortable with. And I've got another 7 battles scheduled.

Thanks Mike. I seem to remember reading about the Battle of the Bulge and how the
American units were those who were refitting after being in combat previously and
were sent to where they are now to rest and they weren't expecting any combat,
especially from the east, through the trees.

Here's the northern front lines and I've been attacking but so far there's been no
movement of units and I'm wondering if I've made a mistake by waking up the northern
troops. The sides are almost evenly matched and I can't seem to find a weak spot.

I dare say that not much progress is going to be made in the north.

Here's the southern front lines and at Saarbrucken I've made a small footprint on
the south side of the riverf and now I need more troops to follow up.

It's T3 and I forgot to fly the paratroopers in T2 and now I don't have any air
cap and they can't fly now. Ooops. It's not a game stopper.

I was having a really bad day yesterday and I F.U.G.G.E.D. my moves up pretty good and
said so in the Diplomatic Pouch. Today I'm feeling a little better and I got an email
from Brian saying that if I wanted we could restart. So we did. I'm on my turn 2 moves
again right now. I anticipate getting back to turn 3 by about noon tomorrow. So it looks
like I'm going to be able to fly the paratroopers after all.

Here's a view of the middle where I'm getting across the river. I'm thinking I
need to get across all these rivers so I can get into the Allied backfield if
possible.

Larry,

It is interesting to see how Brian is blowing all those bridges. This will make your life difficult, but could hamper him later in the battle.

If you can get into his backfield and attack his artillery and HQs that would be great.

Hey there Mike...um, actually I'm pretty sure he's got enough engineers to fix all the broken bridges he's leaving behind him as he retreats. And he knows that I've got "trick" engineers in that you almost have to look under the hood to see if it'll repair a bridge or not. I'm aware of the unit name '*' symbol for the engineers but I have a vague memory of that not being entirely accurate for all the units. I could be wrong. The point is the Axis side has three kinds of engineers and I probably don't always have the proper type where they are supposed to be yet.

Here's the front lines in T5 and the Germans are slowly gaining a hex here and a hex there and the going is slow. Molassis slow. I've been using three-dot attacks to get some prompt movement and the losses are starting to mount. But the Germans are in a hurry to get the job done because of the proximity of clear weather and the threat of Allied air power. I have a nagging suspecision that Brian's air power is going to be a game changer.

I pulled the trigger to release the southern groups last turn and so this turn
they are all awake and the war extends to here now. It's too early to predict
what kind of progress might be made. I'm on the fence whether to be optimistic
or not.

I've forced a couple of crossings and I've been spilling units across the river into the territory beyond.

Here's a view of the middle area of the front lines and you can see the two
German pincers moving forward into the American territories and pushing the
Americans backward. Progress is being made.

Here's a panarama of the fighting currently. All the broken bridges are a
major hassle to get them fixed and the Yanks aren't cooperating but are
bombarding me with arty each turn and my arty is low on bullets so thay don't
shoot back. But there's a little progress being made, so far so good.

I'm going to give it the old industrial college try. If I can get a unit adjacent to his then maybe it might not get away but I'm not really all that hopeful that I can trap some of those people and get them to surrender. I've got some recon units nearby....I'll see how far they can go.
