I don't know. The series was killed off for lack of interest,on the part of the new owners, when another company bought out Microprose.I know you can still find them in bargain bins if your lucky.X-com enemy unknown, the first in the series is the best, though the third one Apocalypse has the better physics engine as far as damage to buildings is concerned.Ain't nothing like blowing away the first floor of a building, only to have the rest hanging in air.BTW any of you guys who played it use the tried and true method of recon by fire on buildings in non-city missions,in city missions you suffer a penalty for civilians killed and more of a penalty if they were killed by your troops,by just hitting a house with everything you got until nothings left to hide behind?Originally posted by Fallschirmjager

This is a game you would try if you like to figure out good fire team methods, and there is a trade off between mobility and firepower.

I dont think it was lack of interest that stopped the series.
After Xcom(the city one) the other company brought out interceptor(no squad combat, all spaceships, what were they thinking) and a lame arse arcade combat game(Enforcer).
The new company sold out bigtime, tried to get a bigger market by dumbing down the games and they lost their old loyal base and no one else really liked the new games.
How fun was it to open up on an area where aliens were hiding with HE ammo and automatic weapons?, the destruction }: [
was awesome.

True,i forgot about those two stinkers.
Yeah that is fun.Though i always loved the reaction fire of troops,i've had some blazing firefights during the enemy turns due to that, and not to mention a few FF casualties due to having forces out of position when returning fire. Why is it always that the guys with the HE rounds seem to like to fire them in the plane when you first land?Or better yet one of your guys figures he can't take it anymore and goes beserk shooting at everything in sight.
And this would still make a great engine for a classic wargame if anyone could get their hands on it and tweak it a bit.

Fallschirmjager, just go to e-bay and do a search for the X-Com on the homepage, there seems to be quite a few left out there, and go for the collectors edition as it holds the three titles from the original series.Though i can't vouch for terror from the deep as,the second title in the series,it wouldn't run on my computer.Though my buddy played it and said it was good if somewhat different.

A year or so ago, PC Gamer Magazine had a demo disc of classic games. It had the full release of the 1st X-Com game Re-coded for Windows!
So I threw it away.
Been trying to find a replacement ever since.
I think X-Com UFO Defense in the collector's Edition is coded for Windows, not sure though.
X-Com Apoc works just fine in Win'98se.

I liked UFO Defense and Apocalypse. Go here and you can download the manuals and startegy guides.

I'll concur with Old Eagle, the two use the same engine but are somewhat different games.UFO Defense though is my personal fave, its got both city and noncity combat,Apoc has only indoor and outdoor combat..though some missions include both depending upon location.Just one bit of advice though if you do get the games...never prime a grenade or high explosives unless you plan to toss it that turn,if the guy gets shot during the enemies phase, say goodbye to him and everybody else around him;)

Good advice. And before you get off the ship in a Terror mission, get the guy with the large rockets and blow everything in sight!

Definetly, and get your best thrower to lob proximity mines at your side and rear. Heavy explosives and rockets can pulverise buildings and ships prior to entry.
isnt pulverise such a nice word?
Yes it is:) Though in the city missions collateral damage should be avoided at all costs.Remember your mission is to save those people;) City missions are the most attrition heavy,if you try to minimize civilian casualties. You must develop good tactics and squad-team cohesion if you wish to perform these succesfully.
i go for the small-arms,grenade method.Though bringing a tank along can help things out,if your carefull. Never ever fire a fusion bomb inside a city:eek:
So people won't get the wrong idea, the game is more indepth then just the combat, there is a strategic side involved in it too.
If you like to figure out such tactical problems as movement, cover, and firepower, while playing a game that is alot of fun then this is for you.All be it in a somewhat sci-fi setting.if what you like is something in a more historical setting and grounded in reality then i would suggest you pass.
