WOW! I really couldn't believe this one as Mundy moved his carriers to a position NE of Rabaul, just 12 hexes from Truk where we had 3 Nell units plus a Zero Daitai on escort... 72 Nells launch, 60 of them fail to find the target... WTF? AE strike routine is just so borked... 5 Nells are shot down by the fighters and the rest can't hit the two targetted carriers... not that there would have been an afternoon strike...[8|]give me just 40% of the bombers that launched from Truk and the enemy might be down one or even two carriers now... how on Earth have the Japanese managed to sink Force Z with all those bombers in one strike? Haven't they heard about the realistic strike routine of AE?

we now have a level 3 airfield on Borneo...

we lose 20 aircraft for no gain today and the overly careless move of the US carriers towards Truk meant nothing... I doubt the enemy will move further North though, I fully expect the carriers to retire... having those two CVs in the area makes invading Rabaul impossible for the moment... when the carriers arrived on the scene I had a convoy just one turn from unloading at Rabaul so that was quite some bad timing for me... if the US carriers stay in the area I expect an evacuation of Rabaul but I'm not sure if those troops at Rabaul are really worth an evacuation operation...

looks like I've been too long away from the game to come up with such a silly idea... the ordered shock attack completely wrecked one of the Nav Guard units leaving it with 0 av for no gain at all... have to reinforce this invasion now...

Submarine attack near Kochi at 106,62

Japanese Ships
AMC Aikoku Maru

Allied Ships
SS Gudgeon

AMC Aikoku Maru is sighted by SS Gudgeon
SS Gudgeon launches 2 torpedoes at AMC Aikoku Maru

at this stage of the war I have still plenty of unescorted ships around, something I don't like but that's due to the completely scattered setup of the Navy...

Submarine attack near Babeldaob at 91,96

Japanese Ships
DD Oyashio, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Tautog

DD Oyashio is sighted by SS Tautog
SS Tautog launches 2 torpedoes

damn Tautog again fires at Oyashio... amazingly enough the destroyer managed to reach Babeldaob with 89 flt damage and will be put into the ARD there which means the ship is safe... same goes for the DD that hit a mine at Hong Kong earlier, survived with over 80 flt damage, means we haven't lost any DDs yet... feels like Allied damage control... today's highlight was this attack on POW... 6 torps fired and only one to find the target, oh well, die rolls not on my side yet... I was long wondering where Force Z was gone after our bombers have hit Repulse at the outbreak of the war, now it's clear they are retiring to Australia, at least POW is... Repulse might still be somewhere for repairs but she vanished after Dec 7th... no escorts with the ship, at least none that are ASW capable which seems quite careless to me as I would definitely escort a BB... might have something to do with KB's strike on the DDs that were on ASW duty off Soerabaja but there should still be enough around to have at least one with POW... IIRC there is no drydock in Australia that is big enough for POW so she has to retire to PH to fix any major flt damage...

WTH? After a sub has hit unescorted POW off Australia's East Coast yesterday we hit Repulse today! Guess what, die rolls are not on our side again, after Repulse was hit by three aerial torps and not even being heavily damaged she takes two torps today but one is a dud [:@]... I'm pretty sure two torps would have done her in but one most likely won't be enough and she can retire to Townsville for immediate repairs... while it's nice to actually hit enemy capital ships all that count is sinking them... also Repulse has no ASW escort at all, absolutely amazing to me...

if you wonder about this ground attack, Mundy has ordered his troops on the Philipines to scatter it seems... first all units were divided between Clark, Manila and Bataan, now they are spreading out and this can get annoying when this LCU plus another support unit reaches San Fernando (one hex on the road NE) as we have our invasion coming in tomorrow and I don't want to do an invasion under fire as it just isn't worth the disablements even with the amphib bonus... our bombers do a good job and slow the unit down and we have ordered a para unit to drop on San Fernando for today...

[X(] Mundy has moved Banshees to Rabaul and they of course attack and hit a precious AV that was moving into the area... something is going on here as we had a sub spotting a rather big convoy going straight towards Rabaul and today we spot at least two dozen ships at the base... this must be a reinforcement attempt?!?!? [X(] evacuating the couple of men there wouldn't need so many ships so I bet he's reinforcing and I'm not sure what to say actually as this is either crazy or he will teach me a real lesson stopping me cold... in total we spotted three enemy TFs in the area, no idea if his carriers are still around though...

have set the Nells at Truk on nav attack 17 hexes to reach Rabaul but even in perfect conditions they don't seem to be able to hit anything with bombs even though they probably have an average navbomb skill of 60... useless just useless...

but what really pisses me off is the cruiser squadron I had ordered to attack shipping at Rabaul during the night, it only moved to Kavieng and stayed there... don't know where these movement failures result from... fully fueled, undamaged, set to full speed, range 9 and the TF moves 6 hexes in total during the day and night phase... oh god damn it!

as our cruiser squadron didn't follow orders and just stopped at Kavieng instead of attacking the convoy at Rabaul we had to order them in today and due to this damn movement flaw (sorry, can't call it anything else but shit as there was zero reason not to move those 9 hexes) we a) catch the convoy unloaded and b) am moving into a threat, more to follow... this is one of two convoys, most likely still loaded with supplies for Rabaul...

the day starts with crazy naval reaction movements all over the place... I've got two cruiser squadrons in the area and I guess they both reacted some 600 miles around... remember the days of WITP when you had to actually plan naval engagements, in AE it has become like arcade to me... when I think what this huge convoy has brought to Rabaul yesterday I could go nuts when my cruisers didn't move in... now we beat up Canberra and some other ships while Mutsuki is burning heavily and has bad odds to make it...

Let me get this right, you are complaining because you beat up some convoys? [8|]

Or was it because your naval forces, in the finest British tradition, brewed tea the day before and did not sail?
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing! :o

Let me get this right, you are complaining because you beat up some convoys? [8|]

Or was it because your naval forces, in the finest British tradition, brewed tea the day before and did not sail?

No! I'm not complaining because I beat up some convoys but because I should have beaten up those ships yesterday! When they were loaded and not 8 hexes South of Rabaul. You will see later on why I didn't like my ships reacting all that far South.

and here's the reason why it pisses me off twice that my cruiser squadron didn't obey orders yesterday! Going in and out yesterday would have probably meant killing that convoy too while being loaded with troops for Rabaul and NOT being in range of the enemy carriers that sprinted in... a single 1000lb bomb is enough to kill an IJN DD and there are more to follow...

today's tally is 1 Allied CA, 1 CL and about 30 freighters including precious troop transport sunk for 3 IJN DDs lost... points wise this is an IJN victory (nearly 300 pts scored for ships) but only for today and I don't like losing DDs... tactically spoken it was an Allied victory as my cruisers didn't move to Rabaul and the reinforcement attempt was succesful... now I don't know why Mundy didn't have his CVs closer to Rabaul two days earlier already to cover the transports and if he decides to pursuit my damaged cruisers it will become a disaster for the IJN... he doesn't know where KB is I guess and he was attacked by Nells out of Truk earlier so I wonder if he got the balls to race North, all my ships are ordered full speed to Truk...

after my idiotic shock attack at Tarakan I had to bring a Rgt as reinforcement, no doubt the base will fall... a cruiser squadron is covering the invasion, with Force Z being in Australia and Houston being sunk there should be only the Dutch cruisers, the dreaded Boise and perhaps some RN CL/DD left in the DEI but I have not spotted any of them so far...

The dreaded Boise is only a "light" cruiser and easily succumbs to 250 kg bombs and torpedoes.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

the good news to start with, enemy high command didn't show balls and the US carriers didn't pursue my damaged heavy cruisers that were spriting back to Truk... the rest of the two Task Forces should all make it home if there isn't a lucky sub waiting somewhere... so in total we lost 3 DDs in this operation, with about halve a dozen CA/DD in need of yard time...

that's the start of today's highlight... Mundy has moved those high value xAP to Singapore, either bringing in more troops [X(] or trying an Asian Dunkerque... that's again pure luck on my part as we didn't spot the enemy convoy earlier and KB is moving in to cover the Malaya invasion that was finally setup and started moving as it took me near three weeks to put everything together I want to bring in in an organized way... as we are attacking at near max range only the Kates attack but they do quite well attacking those transports... moving such high value ships into such a position in Dec 41 is either very optimistic or very bold as one could imagine even the unreliable Betty/Nell plague could get a working attack at some point...
