@Soviets turn 67:

V. Luki is taken back from the Germans,
20th / 11th Armies rail reinforcements there ...
still heavy snow up here, beginning to thaw in the deep south.

Edit: just did Soviets #68, not much change (Germans hold Odessa)
V. Luki is breaking through in that sector.
Leningrad counter-offensive makes progress around Novgorad.

I have pretty much determined that my opp. is not digging in hisunits in many areas,
they are still at 1% entrenchment or 15% entrenchment that you find in towns when you move in.

Had he dug in more, I would not have been able to make as much progress as Soviets.
I think I will suggest to him to dig in more, using "D" key.

Yes, to encircle the entire Wehrmacht!

Just kidding, only exploiting where I can during this winter.
That just happened to be at opposite ends of the map.

But now, near V. Luki:
a POW camp has been found near Loknya!

To the Rescue!!

March 1, 1942:

General Winter still abides,
Russians are VERY unstable,
due to limitations w/ Vodka rations.

They used to get two drams / day,
now one dram / day.

REVOLT!!!! (j/k, I had only one round of combat last turn,
due to failed force check ... I attribute that to lack of Vodka)

But I sincerely wish the snow would melt.
@March 1, 1942 (game time) the snow abides.

@Soviets turn 75

The snow just will not melt.
We seem to be stuck in a perpetual winter.

The rescue operation to Loknya came up empty.
POWs seem to have been spirited away ...
to be used as slave labor in the Reich, no doubt.

Meanwhile, the Novgorod counter-offensive encounters ...
Italians?? WTH are ITALIANS doing up there?

Been seeing these southern type folks in several different games showing up in odd places.
Rumanians in the Baltic, e.g. in another game. Hungarians around Leningrad. Things like that.

I think there is another scene, maybe it was D21,
that had the rule about limiting minors to operating below a certain stop line.
Like, they couldn't venture farther north than a certain line. Can't remember.

Yes, I thought I saw them some months ago around the Baltic.
Must be some kind of special fish there in the Luka that goes well with Italian cuisine.
So they went fishing there LoL ...

I was looking through some very old FitE forums,
and stumbled across some posts from 15 or so years ago from AcOW days.

Including a few of my own LoL!

Hard to believe this old warhorse of a game still holds up after all these years.
Not sure if TOAWIV makes much of a difference for FitE1 (as opposed to AcOW/III),
but (to me) this one is still playable in IV ... maybe some updates to it for
TOAWIV might put more life back into it ... yes, I know we have FitE2,
but it would be nice to see a version 6 of FitE1 ...

I think FitE1 is a bit more fun b/c it is not as overwhelming in size as FitE2.
FitE2 gets the feel of a chore sometimes.

Well, I just thought I'd toss that out there...
and note, back in early 2004, it was noted that in early versions
the Germans usually took Moscow by about turn 22 or so (or earlier) ...
in this go, Soviets seem a bit overpowered

Here's an Italian Inf. unit lurking around Murmansk.
The wiki thing says this unit operated in Yugoslavia / Croatia against Partisans.
I think they must be reconstituting all around the map,
can't imagine having moved that guy all the way across the map. Weird.

@soviets turn 77:

A MiG-3 pilot spots a flashing glint of metal
reflecting sunlight against the snow ...
It is a distress signal!!
The POWs have been spotted west of Idritsa!

To the Rescue, Again!

Yes, we shall see ... @Soviet turn 82 in hand, game time Apr. 1, 1942:

here is SW Front, that tried to retake Odessa.
9th September Coastal leading charge there,
recons pushed through to retake Cherkassy,
but have been repulsed since, lack of reinforce there hampered operations.

In the North, snow still refuses to melt....
Soviet POWs have been whisked away again ...
the search continues to rescue our Comrades there!

have advised opp. to use "D" key to dig in easily,
otherwise Soviets may seem overpowered

@Soviet turn 92 (May 6, 1942)

43rd Army crosses the Dnieper southwest of Smolensk and liberates Gorki.
30th Army turns south toward Polotsk.

Their goal: Vitebsk, cutting off the northern salient of AGC.

I think '43 is optimistic. @Soviets turn 107 (June 28, 1942) is moving now.

Lead elements on North Central front (now only ~200km from Riga) are out of gas.
Nice progress there on NC front, almost into Vitebsk, but just not enough fire. I think they've shot their bolt and have to rest them.
AGS has found new life, so the battle is kind of shifting to a more southern focus.

The earlier SW Front has been destroyed by AGS, and AGS is now pushing back trying again for Crimean Peninsula.
Soviets are rather weak down there, plus D and Z towns are facing heavy thrusts.
So my reinforcements are stretched pretty thin, with me also having to fight off his Arctic / Far East fronts,
coming out of Archangelsk (result of losing Murmansk early on.)

Iran and Turkey are just distractions now for both of us.
I probably should have sent those troops up to Crimea. C'est la Guerre!

One interesting aspect of the game, is my AS has been overwhelming for a long time
(is now Soviets 151:10) but not sure what is up w/ his air. I don't see much if any German air intercept or combat support,
some interdiction but not much, and it seems what planes / airfields I can find are always under heavy cloud cover or storms.
Seems like he is keeping all of his air way back.

I've got about 6000+ aircraft assigned all around the map,
maybe I will try more air-to-ground attacks this turn. But Berlin looks to be a long long way to go.

Late model T34s will be producing soon, maybe those will help.

@beginning of Soviets turn 113 (July 19, 1942)

not much progress any more toward Riga due to lack of supply.
I need to figure out how to take more advantage of Air situation
(currently Soviet AS is 168:8) [!!]

Due to declaration of war on Turkey / Iran,
British air has come on line ... but is too far away to do much damage.

American air is reinforcing due to lend-lease.

Much Soviet reinforce is twiddling thumbs east of Moscow ...
I need to start railing those guys into position on Southern Front...
AGS is making progress down South, more than I would like.

But, I am hoping that in deep South,
Soviets can eventually make there way into the back door of Rumania / Hungary / Yugoslavia.

If I can get those Armies into the backfield of Rumania etc.,
then it should eventually be "lights out" for AGS.

Interesting game! Kudos to Gen. JCL on his Axis strategies!
He is pressing D/Z towns, Stalino, making his push in AGS.
But, I think, too little too late. Soviets should (I think)
eventually overwhelm w/ their "Colossus" of reinforce.

I'm hoping Berlin by late 1944.
