japanese offensive

Post by deVada »

seems to loose it's impact ...

althrough Australia may fall (defend it like hell - without AUS units it is impossible to conquer the world in 1943) having 2 BB sunk is a major success.

Congrats !

What about Oahu ?

PS
could You post packed 5 gamefiles.
I would be delighted to see the replay !

more half-a*sed offensives by Japan to try to keep US stretched/on the hop - ho ho , he more than enough of everything.

Silly mistakes too like leaving a HQ exposed in India (d'uh) while Dan carefully manouvres units to get 'right' one at top of stack for max effect - all kudos to him for keeping a steady hand and eye.

Also afore mentioned half-a*sed offensives leading to very low oil, despite NOT having many gas guzzling BBs left? Suggestions welcome; already doing some manual convoys for oil, other ideas?

Oil Conservation

Post by Capt. Harlock »

Have you tried manual convoys for fuel rather than oil? If you grab fuel from captured bases and ship it back to the cities on mainland Japan, you may be able to prevent the city from drawing out of the National Oil Reserve.

Also, train your air squadrons at bases with high amounts of fuel, so they don't need to be re-supplied.

thanks for the complement. i do have a complaint about land combat. it seems the experience is everything. i attacked a single japanese division with 80 exp. with 5 divisions the highest with 86 exp and the others 60+. i lost over 100 sq in the first attack with a top notch general. in another games i had 2 div and 1 brg in aust. divisions were high 30 exp. with plenty of pp's and a japanese divison lands with exp 70 and only 40+ ready and captures the base and throws the aussie units out. in another i attacked a single rgmt with hight exp with 5 divisions and it last 4 rounds. i attack at the same time with 4 divisions against 3 japanese divisions and the japanese divisions all surrender on the first attack. weird!

LCU Experience

Post by Capt. Harlock »

You're quite right about the importance of experience: I started a thread, which has since been buried, complaining about the low ratings of many of the Allied LCU's. The basic problem is that the manual is in error about the formula used to pass the experience checks before combat. Here is a table of the true percentage chance of passing the first and second checks:

LCU Exp 1st Check 2nd Check
10 3% 2%
15 8% 5%
20 13% 8%
30 30% 18%
40 53% 32%
50 83% 50%
55 100% 61%
60 100% 72%
70 100% 98%
71 100% 100%

Note that failing the first check reduces readiness to 1%, (the troops throw down their guns) and failing the second check reduces readiness to 25%. As you can see, even troops with 60 experience are vulnerable to failing the second check.

One last point about commanding generals: due to "fog of war", the general on the spot is often not the one who takes charge of the battle. I have, more than once, seen the AIR LEADER of the HQ take charge. For this reason, I think Jeremy's change to the Leader Ratings in Ver. 3.2 is a mistake.

Huh !

Post by deVada »

it is middle of 1943 and Japanese forces seem to be stuck on all areas ...

Impressive air battle near Hawaii Islands ...

What about Kauai ?
Is the base available for upgrading ?

Do You see a chance to reinforce it and grow it up ?
Having air superiority may be difficult ... If in 1943 japanese aircraft looses are twice as allied ... The situation doesn't look good ...

I suppose that during next week IJA forces would be withdrawn from Pearl ... End of a dream ...

Strawb - if You wouldn't do something the allies will be victors !
But defeating Japan isn't that easy as it may seem to be ...
Good luck !

too depressed to write...

..and Dan providing all the news.

I mean when you land 3 and half top notch divisions on to an australian city you DO expect to take it!?

Now have trapped and dieing units in rubbish places - been playing the AI for too long plus all that good luck i weas having against Hans meant I was over confident.

Max homeland training of air groups going on, manual oil convoys happening already, max anti-sub effort. Navy all back in dry dock AGAIN, 3000+ shipyard points seems to have little effect, oil finally breaking 5000 point barrier (woo hoo! I have PPs!) despite no gas guzzlers at sea.. and I thought taking midway was good..

grim times, lousy play by me, top work by Dan - If Dan starts getting aggressive, it will be all over in '43 (please Dan put me out of misery...)

Do not worry Strawb!

Post by deVada »

With Kamikazes, adequate amount of spare planes, and trained divisions You can stand well until 1945 !

I have also thought that Graham is finished in 1944, but the reality showed to be different ... Even a total naval & aerial superiority doesn't help.

(IMHO) With plenty of divisions You should replay Graham's tactics in Australia and India, wait for kamikazes and sell Your skin as dearly as possible!

You might also try to capture Attu and Kiska, upgrade them and try to take Alaska after successful repair of Your battlefleet ...

Or else build up the defences !

Anyway - having such game on loosing side has also some fun.
For pain lovers ...
But I also feel a strange shiver in the back while fighting in desperate defense as Axis in 1945 or Allies in 1942 ...

Rare IJN broadcast

Post by strawb »

IJN/IJA Joint Forces Radio have decide to say something only when IJN/IJA do something exciting. Or do something vaguely exciting. OK, OK when doing anything at all.

Actually we have been busy filling sandbags from Palembang to Midway, but that is not exciting. So the hot news is of a fine evacuation of nearly four divs from under noses of aussies in Cairns - yes yes 'wars are not won by evacuations' but getting four, now well exercised, divs out for defence is top news. I was quite prepared to lose one out of three CVs used as cover but in the event only one was scratched.

Meanwhile my esteemed opponent is doing all the right, methodical, things and has has conducted first proper opposed landing - Johnston is his. Though I wonder if two huge TFs of BB/CA, lots of B-29s, and both CV TFs working over the garrison ( a div) for over three turns is not a bit of over kill :D what happend to the two pronged march to Tokyo.

Sub traps had no luck - how many flotillas can a CV TF pass through in one turn, and Mr 4Omm is giving Ma Betty the brush of on every date, even without the super skilled F4Fs around.

Second and third line positions being reinforced as we speak, nice shiny new fighters (with guns that MIGHT wake up a dozing b-29 pilot) pouring off lines into stockpile, but sadly with child
pilots. PPs and oil being stored up, hatches generally battened.
