In the last 20 years or so there has been a concerted effort to recognise the Vietnam Veterans, who are getting quite old now. They often received a hard time on returning but it wasn't their fault they served in a controversial war. My best friend's father was conscripted and my uncle volunteered as a young army reserve officer.

The Vietnamese considered Australians as very dangerous opponents, because they avoided jungle tracks and clearings and were very patient. My friend's dad didn't talk much about the war but told me a couple of things. He said they once lay completely still all day to perform an ambush, even when a deadly snake slithered over him. I know there were highly disciplined U.S. forces there but he said that in general the Americans smoked and were too loud. The enemy knew where they were. Once, some U.S. forces radioed his unit, asking where they were and telling them that they were on a certain hill. A few minutes later the hill received a heavy artillery barrage.
