Air HQs do not help with training, but they can help with airfield stacking issues (which affects maintenance) and taking replacement aircraft. Not all the WCUSA aircraft are going to Europe, so you want some of the temporarily restricted (non-withdrawing) ones to be able to take new aircraft models and train on them before being sent to fight in the game area.
I hope you set the switches for replacements and upgrades OFF before running your first turn so you do not have to do that one unit at a time later! That way you can direct the taking of aircraft to the units you want to get them.

Oh yeah, I had replacements and upgrades off by default. I can turn on replacements when viewing groups under a certain HQ, so those I want to get replacements, like in the west coast, get turned back on, and groups I don't want replacing now (such as in the PI because I don't want them sucking supply) will stay turned off.

I wonder, can I withdraw certain groups in the PI and have their planes go back into a global pool, or are the airframes stuck in the Philippines?

You can withdraw them although in certain cases the airframes will try to transfer to other squadrons in the Philippines. However, if you withdraw those squadrons as well all the aircraft will end up in the pools. Not sure if wise though depending on what squadrons you are withdrawing. The sooner the fighter cover over the PI is denuded the quicker the Japanese can bomb bases and supplies into non-existence and the sooner everyone is eating mule meat.

I'm hoping that ".27b" is a typo and you really meant ".26b"? The new 11.27 beta has it's own AI files, and those are made to work with all the new features of that beta release. It does not require an AI file update, and in fact if you did add the 2012 or 2019 v11.26 AI files, that would probably screw it up, although to what degree I couldn't say.

Yeah, typo. 26B is what I meant and where I extracted the AI files. I saved my old install of 11.27 where I didn't update any AI files at all.

Thanks! :)

About pilots, I always withdraw best pilots from squadrons in Philippines after they get low on planes.

Experienced pilots are worth it, especially in early war when Japan has significant edge in experience.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to get Pappy out of Burma and back into the USMC where he belongs.

What I'd like to do is raid a bunch of the US fighter/bomber squadrons I've been training on the East Coast for all their well trained pilots, then put in a buncha boots right out of recruit training and ship them off to the 8th airforce.

Europe first my donkey. :P

I think Pappy would come back as USMC pilot when AVG withdraws.

Unfortunately I have usually him killed in Burma/India....

He does not, he stays in the game as a US Army pilot.

However, he could possibly be modified in the editor to have an end date that corresponds to the disband date of the AVG and then come back later as an USMC pilot.

I think in DaBabes versions he does.

But you are probably right about "vanilla" scenarios.
