Marianas Scenario MP Match AAR OldCrowBalthazor [Japan] vs Simicro [USA]
Re: Marianas Scenario MP Match AAR [Japan]
Nice AAR. That HQ at the beginning makes it very tough.
Do infantry units have more movement points than usual in this scenario?

Thank you

Not that I am aware of. But OldCrowBalthazor is more knowledgeable about that.Duedman wrote: Sat May 04, 2024 7:18 am Do infantry units have more movement points than usual in this scenario?

June 29, 1944 [Japan] Saipan
A weakened US Marine Regiment moving up the road is pounded by defensive artillery. General Saito realizes its weakened state from atop Mt Tapotchau and orders an attack, destroying it.
Tinian: Our forces dig in on the southern end of the island, awaiting US forces.
Guam: The entire command is on the move to prepare new defensive lines and ambush sites for an expected US invasion.

Thanks Simicro. Bill actually made the change to the map. Great to read the AAR.

Re: Marianas Scenario MP Match AAR [Japan]
Turn 9, July 1, 1944
Saipan: General Saito spies out another US Hq on the western road, and orders Attack! 攻撃!
The Hq is almost destroyed and over-run.
Tinian: The sugarcane fields seen to be waving in the wind, but closer inspection with field glasses reveals the Marine 'Dinks' are moving through it. The artillery is ordered to fire into the fields, in the hopes of catching the cane on fire, and drive those rats out for better shooting.
Guam: The Command is setting up new ambush sites.
End of turn, the Japanese get an event ''Army Re-organization-25 Mpps". This is great as I was unaware of this and was going to suggest something like this in the forum. Basically we are gathering up stragglers, walking wounded and etc.
Banzai!

Hey Simicro looks good. Yeah we synced our graphics well for this collaboration... without really planning on it.
Btw I'm on a mobile device (tablet)...and it's easy to use the old index finger and thumb to expand your images too.
As for the Japanese strategy and tactics. Well, I kind of roleplay here. I usually play the Japanese knowing full well they lost the war as soon as they started it.
Gives a bit of liberty then, to go for broke and be unflinchingly aggressive...

Re: Marianas Scenario MP Match AAR [Japan]
Thanks Bill!
As an amateur, I like tinkering with graphics, design, that kind of things. In this case, the blue tint of the water is just perfect (knowing that I'm very picky with colors and graphics) and provides a nice background to lay on it white fonts. Good combination of colours, good contrast, easy to read, easy for the eyes. Well, I just leveraged on what OldCrowBalthazor initiated. If someday, say on a mockup for example, you need an external eye on graphics, legibility, usability, I'm your man

PS: by the way I added the turn number read with the brand new tooltip

Short story: teamwork!
Long story: yeah that's the beauty of it. I think I said already somewhere but I gladly repeat: that is the american way

That's the beauty of this game, and thanks to the care of scenario designers, we can elect to play the historical strategy and tactics, or experiment new ones, by curiosity, or simply fun.OldCrowBalthazor wrote: Wed May 08, 2024 7:46 pm As for the Japanese strategy and tactics. Oh just to let you know, my paternal ancestry is French...from Lorraine and via the Languedoc Regiment (Martin Balthazor-1755 shipped to Canada during the 7 Years War/French and Indian War). When the war was lost in Quebec, the regiment was paroled and all members wee supposed to transport back to France. Martin found a women, she was First Nations Cree, so stayed behind...of course. So did a bunch of soldiers of that regiment.Simicro wrote: Wed May 08, 2024 9:06 pmThanks man!OldCrowBalthazor wrote: Wed May 08, 2024 7:46 pm Hey Simicro looks good. The french way would be more: think a lot and plan a lot to minimize risks, to keep things under control. Actually I started a bit the french way but quickly decided to follow you without thinking too much... using the american way. And inspiration came by doing. And here we are

Turn 11 July 5, 1944
Saipan: General Saito's troops retreat and hold on Mt Tapotchau. Rain and mud make it a hell for the attackers, who are also severely damaged.
Taipan: Artillery duels as the Americans creep south.
Guam: New defenses and ambush sites completed. No image for security reasons.

By curiosity I Googled 'First Nations Cree' and found that... there are some beautiful Cree womenOldCrowBalthazor wrote: Wed May 08, 2024 9:26 pm Martin found a women, she was First Nations Cree, so stayed behind...of course. So did a bunch of soldiers of that regiment.

I used to dislike NATO counters because they are technical. But I decided to learn and try when I started SC, and in the end I much prefer them to the figurines, for their legibility and simplicity, especially when there are many units. I just regret the figurines for the jap fighters and bombers because they are superb!
Regarding the AAR, about the triangles used to represent fire: sometimes the shape fill color is yellow, sometimes it is orange. Do you do it on purpose? Don't you use a 'template'? Just curious. Not a big deal though.

My cousin Tom asked me once, 'why has almost all the boys in our family going generations back end up with with American or Alaskan Natives? It's odd haven't you noticed?' Maybe it was because our ancestor Martin started the trend haha.
I use NATO counters with WW1 on forward generally, but use the 3d Sprites a lot with the old eras. There's other hybrid counters that use a mix of NATO and graphical images such as planes.
There's a variety that are available...and (shameless plug) you can see by randomly looking at the different SC games I produce for YT.
I was just joking around anyways, but this NATO vs 3D Sprites deal has caused big arguments and out right hostility. Some of the more 'purist' wargamers consider NATO counters more 'professional'. Well they are when wargame scenarios are done in think tanks and war college venues. As far as I am concerned, it's what ever floats your boat.

Those pointer graphics used for artillery strikes are just something I came up with. Yellow inside or orange? Well I guess we are on the road to standardizing them. I just forgot what color, yellow or orange, I used from the last time I created a map image for our AAR.....

I have WitE (but don't play it for various reasons) and just got ACW. And with Pacific I'm set for the couple of coming years. NATO counters all the way. I'm just like you, to each his own. One, I'm happy because it fits my needs and tastes. And two, I'm happy again because no need to install MODs, etc. even if some are nice. I like flight simulators but I have some bad memories of spending more time to tweak the PC for more performance, to tinker files to have this or that, than flying. It's cool to share with other why you like NATO counters or figurines, or X or Y mod, but I've never understood the 'endless big debates' (not specific to this game).OldCrowBalthazor wrote: Thu May 09, 2024 9:18 am I use NATO counters with WW1 on forward generally, but use the 3d Sprites a lot with the old eras. Saipan: No movement is seen of US troops. General Saito holds on Mt Tapotchau.
Tinian: A US tank unit already damaged suffers an artillery barrage and then an infantry attack, almost destroying the whole unit and forcing it to retreat.
Guam: The entire command digs in at new positions and is prepared for any invasion force.
