You will notice I highlighted one section in red, The reason for that is that my carrier that had been shooting up Nik's transports near Celebes, ran out of "Sortie Points" and could only launch 2 aircraft on the last mission. Needless to say his remaining ships will escape and find shelter in Darwin because I have to return to Palau to rearm... No you can not replenish these points at sea so I have to return to port to load back up. Granted this was a CVL without a whole lot of Sortie Points but they have definitly put a throttle on how long a carrier can operate with out returning to port.

Oh, I wouldn't worry -- the sno-cone factories are being destroyed in Singapore. (I didn't know the Brits were partial to them: what happened to gin and tonics?) As for Corsairs, I doubt the game will last that long. If it does, the new builds will have slowed considerably!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Bad Day at Rabaul

Post by pry »

Well ole Nik had a rather bad day at the office, his entire TF got itself sunk at Rabaul, I think he was trying to evacuate his garrison and had just arrived at the same time as my invasion force. The South Sea Brigade is ashore with out loss and Rabaul will soon fall.

It has been very quite for about 2 weeks now but that will soon change. I have been busy relocating a whole bunch of my forces, supplies and fuel to forward bases that will act as jump off points and I am now ready to unleash the main part of my offensive. It should prove not to be a very Merry Christmas season in the Pacific for the Allies.

My recon shows that Nik has withdrawn nearly all his forces in Malaya to Singapore, and also has abandoned Rangoon and looks to have fallen back and chosen Mandalay to make his stand in Burma. He has already started bombing my airfield at Rahaeng, guess he learned a few things from the last game.

There were a few new LCU combat tweaks in this build and the Chinese are no longer a pushover, I have to think about my strategy in China it is now much more costly.

What the heck is going on at Yenen? The Japanese have a 3:1 edge, there's no fortifications worth speaking of, and they're still losing more than the other side with almost every attack. Is there a highly experienced unit defending there?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

It looks like Nik means to stand and fight for Manila. Japanese units retreating after losing only 10 men?? Someone will answer to the Emperor for this!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

The offensive picks up steam, bases are falling from the Upper Solomons and Rabaul to Borneo and up in Burma.
Yenen FINALLY falls in China but I suffered a reverse at Hengchow.
I may have picked off Maryland on her way back to the states for repairs (Put 3 torpedoes into her) [:D]

Yes, something very odd happened at Hengchow. Check me on this: the Allies mounted a deliberate (not shock) attack, and suffered about four times the casualties of the Japanese. The assault odds were only 2 to 1. And the Japanese were still driven off in retreat??

Pry would have to confirm but it would seem he had a lot of ART and support troops in Henchow and not a lot of INF. The assualt odds were 2-1 but the 676 guns must of caused the casualties. I would guess 2-1 is enough to get some troops to retreat.

wouldn't call it 'odd' The combat assault power at Hengchow is very strong.....1300+ assault points. However, the bulk of my Chinese forces are inexperienced. The Japanese units had just arrived and were completely unentrenched so a 2:1 odds calc was all that was needed to make them back off. The inexperienced but beefy attack combined with the new urban terrain hex rule resulted in a large amount of casualties to the attacker, but they're determined attack was enough to force a retreat, albeit at heavy cost. Worth it to me.....because it makes Pry burn supply as well as men.....and thats a bad proposition when your on the offensive everywhere else at the same time!

In the past.....the attacker tended to suffer less casualties than the defender (Atoll combat excepted) and i always found that odd....particularily when attacking fortified positions. That tendancy appears to have been reversed now and while certainly should not be an absolute, is more sensical to me......we 'are' fighting in urban terrain afterall......Stalingrad was like that, albeit, on a larger, better tranined and more bloody scale than in fighting the Chinese.

One thing is becoming apparant.....jumping into strongly defended hexes with insufficent force levels and not backing it up with air and/or sea bombardment is becoming more costly.

Found out why Pry was able to hit Maryland.......gonna voice an opinion on that little biscit. [:-]

The biggest problem was my forces were exausted with high fatigue, they marched 120 miles from Wuhan to Changsha. Then attacked and captured Changsha, then marched 120 more miles to Hengchow and attacked without any rest. They gave better than they got but were just wore out and forced to retreat. Was trying to take Hengchow before Nik had a chance to start building forts. Now I have to rest and then start a seige.
