Yeah but '1st Squadron 3rd Battalion The Coldstream Guards' carries a certain air of history. 1st Squadron, 3rd Battalion The 31st Tank Regiment is for those armies who have no history. [:D][:D][:D]

Couldn’t agree more.
1st Lothian and Border Horse has a certain ring to it or my old regiment The Honourable Artillery Company which fought in Nth Africa and Italy as 11th Royal Horse Artillery.
If only those Aussies had followed the tradition and not called their infantry battalions 2/1st, 2/6th etc. However, it didn’t stop them being bloody good fighters. (I have to say that ‘cause Panther are from the antipodes.) [8|]

HTTR is definately quick to learn, hard to master. I'm definately not an experienced wargamer (actually racing simulations are my may game interest), but somehow I found HTTR and I'm getting more and more into it.
You can play on so many different "levels".

First, I looked at things very simply: Theres the objective, heres a bunch of my troops, theres a bunch of enemy troops, lets try to get to the objective. I didn't even pay much attention to if troops were infantry or armour. I usually got my a** kicked, but sometimes I somehow managed victories, without really knowing why.

Next, I started to pay more attention to unit type and strength, using artillery, roads, flanking movements etc. I still didn't bother much about fatigue, morale, commanders, fire bases etc.

Now, I'm working more with trying to plan my actions better, setting up roadblocks, fire bases, learning when to defend and when to counterattack etc. I'm getting better, but I still get my a** kicked a lot. The main difference is now I know something about why. This is really what makes things more and more interesting. Winning or loosing is not that important, what makes it fun is finding out what decisions and factors that decided the outcome.

Next, I'm going to try to learn more about commander influence, predicting and minimizing order delay etc. I haven't dared playing one of the longer scenarios yet, but I suppose it's time soon. Right now I find myself playing the same small scenarios over and over again. Some seem completely impossible until you try a new approach and suddenly you are victorious. My greatest game yet was playing Joe's Bridge as the germans when after a daring counterattack the Allied commander surrendered (to my big surprise).

d95err,

Your situation sounds quite a bit like mine. I was totally clueless. I had played air combat sims since 1992 or so. The only slight glimmer of comprehension I had was that I had played some CMBO before this.

Despite being lost, I knew that the game engine was something special. I had never seen a more scalable game interface (command at any level) and I was amazed that to achieve that the developer simply mimicked reality. Gee, what a concept!

So, somehow I managed to go from clueless newbie to clueless beta tester. Living proof that the Peter Principle is alive and well in the field of game development. :)

The "2/" bit is actually what passes for tradition over here: it's there because these were part of the "Second AIF", the original AIF being those units that fought in WWI.

I've got both games and find each has its own merits.Kp is like the old board games I played in the 70's you can take the time to micro manage all the numbers and create plans but this is about exciting as watching paint dry.I fimd that in HTTR when I give orders to units and they start moving and executing them I feel like the commanders must have back then,,Things are beyond my immediate control and I have to trust to the small unit leaders to acheive what I think I ordered them to do in the first place.
Damn sure It's confusing as the action unfolds and I feel more like a spectator but I'm the CO and see the overall picture while the line grunts see whats in front of them and react to that. After all they are only following my orders,I've played RTS games that don;t get me excited as the action in this game.At times I feel like Pickett in Gettysburg cheering my boys forward.
I like this game a lot and reading the AA reports here give me a better feel for interpreting the situation at the start and planning a strategy.YEP lots more exciting than KP
