A good WWi is the miniseries ANZAC's, 5 x 2 hour episodes and not just about galipolli, but much time spent on the western front. You can even see Paul Hogan ( crocodile dundee0 in one of his much better rolls

other than that "A bridge to far" is a true classic

Bridge over the river kwai.
Zulu.
Patton.
Dr. Strangelove.
Midway.
War and Peace (Greatest Achievment in recent History)

Best movie has to be War and Peace though. It's a Soviet made film about the Franco Russian war of 1805-1812
Because it was made in 1969 there was no way of using computers to generate all the men needed to fight a battle, so the soviets gathered some 250,000 extras from their army and taught them to act, they each had authentic uniforms and were all nicely clothed. The battle scenes are just fantastic with 250,000 men slugging it out on film, and then insane camera angles were great. I think something like 200 horses actually died while filiming and so it was banned in some states by those Animal Rights Groups.

Not to nitpick, but isn't "Dr Strangelove" more of a sci-fi film or even a satire? I never think of it as a war film, though it has that as a background.

Some of the best

12 O'clock High
Battle of Britain
In Harm's Way

The worst:

Pearl Harbor Ben Aflack edition
(looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its a duck!)

Full Metal Jacket
(all marines are zombie killing manics AKA DOOM)

Apocolypse Now
(war movie on drugs set to doors music)

Recently, Enemy at the Gates was a pretty good one. And the original Alamo with John Wayne is a personal favorite. Memphis Belle was pretty good. And a favorite of mine, not a real "War" movie, but For the Boys was pretty good.

Just to keep it on a pacific theme and in no particular order:

Merrills Marauders

The sands of Iwo Jima

Guadacanal Diary

The fighting Seabees

Wake island

There was a movie about Ira Hayes that i watched but i can't remember the name,it left an impression though.

Back to Bataan

Bataan

That movie about Carlsons raiders and Makin Island(?)

Midway

basically anything about the Pacific because it is such an interesting theater of war.

I have to throw in "The Winter War". Not a Hollywood romp, but a good depiction of warfare in the ETO.

The Movie Musical, South Pacific??? I liked it...

Mitzi Gaynor sure was a rocket in her day. Thankfully we have these old movies to remind us what women looked like before the lip jobs, implants, senseless tatoos, endless piercings and the other needless crap women think is "becoming" these days.

I always thought Doris Day was a babe. I'm half her age but she sure looks good in her early movies. Awesome sexy voice too.[&o]

Hello...

I liked Mitz. I really liked Veronica Lake. I wanted to marry Dina Shore, hottest babe since Helen (of Troy).

Ingrid Bergman....

But, I digress -

Favorite Films:
The Enemy Below
Cruel Sea
Das Boot
Sands of Iwo Jima (The old man was a DI)
Battle Cry (by Uris, he was there)
Task Force (1949 - Walter Brennan as an Admiral)
Mr. Roberts
The Longest Day
Saving Private Ryan

Just a few. I keep being drawn to "In Harm's Way" but the plot is predictable and the special effects attrocious. Only thing that saves it is the acting. It had some big names in it. It also had Patricia Neal - I don't know who had the better voice, her or Lauren Bacall.

Band of Brothers - Argueably the most accurate war film ever.
