Increasing performance

I have an AMD Athlon XP 2700+, GeForce 4 Ti 4400, 1 GB of RAM, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card, and 2 40 GB 7200 RPM disk drives. I run XP home edition. I have had no speed problems or hang ups at all. I did make sure I had DX 9.0b, the latest drivers for everything in the box before I downloaded WitP. Last time I looked, my 'ship training' time was about 2-3 seconds. I usually have 4 - 6 programs active at the same time as WitP(usually Adobe, my editor, UV, and Outlook Express).

I've upgraded to 1 Gig DDR 233 (for my new AMD XP2400 and new Dragon KT600 Plus MB). Still no change in speed.

I cant get windows 98 to work with my hardware so I can't do that, I'm stuck with XP.

I could change my Vidio Card. I've got a Geforce 5200 AGP with 128 MB DDR. Tankerace has the same card and he is also running slow.

Can anybody whose got good performance (ie. training ship crews takes less than say 15 sec rather than my 50 sec.) and an Athalon chip tell me what graphics card they have.....before I spend more money for no effect. I'd like to see several replys cause I may not be able to get all kinds of vidio cards locally.

Well, it runs fine here on both a 933MHz Pentium III with 256Mb of RAM and an Athlon 1GHz with 256Mb of RAM, both with GeForce 2 MX cards. Of course, my definition of good performance may differ from yours - the training crews segment definitely isn't over in 5 seconds (in the grand campaign), but it seems tolerable.

I'm not sure what the bottleneck is that's holding your systems up, I just know that we have definitely seen slowdowns caused by the sound problem and that's why I ask you to try renaming to "nosound" first before making any other changes. There are so many possible places where a misconfiguration can hurt system performance that I hesitate to speculate on that. You all know your own systems better than I do. If you're at your wit's end, please post a DxDiag and we can all see if anything jumps out.

You might also try some of the benchmarks from MadOnion (like 3D Mark, PC Mark) since they allow online comparison with other systems that have similar specs. That can help you know if your system is performing as expected based on your components or below par.

Here's my DxDiag.

Don't get me wrong, it is playable as is, it's just rather sluggish when scrolling (yes I played with map scroll speed), after clicking select destination or set home base there is a three second pause, and the surface combat crawls along after a round, and yes, ship crew training clocks in at 1 minute.

I did try renaming the sound to nosound, but no relief.

Set your map scroll rate to 0 then scroll around the whole map area.

You will notice pauses as it loads a new part (there are 20 chunks).

After you have them all loaded, do you still see the slowdown?

I noticed those longer pauses Mr. Frag, but there are still short pauses when scrolling

Interestingly, once I click select destination or set home base, the map comes up and I can FLY all around the map, it's actually almost too fast then

Agreed. I had the same problem with a Ti4200, which went away when I put my Radeon 9800 in.

I do still get some minor battle animation slowdowns, though. I'll see if renaming the directory clears those.

I can't get around it with cash? Can I just get a different video card, or are you saying it isn't the video card? Would one of the brand new cards do better?

Hi guys,

I had the slow game at one time. I changed the Sound dir to no sound and it has increased my turn speed
tremendously. Playing Scen 15 as IJN. My turn one was taking around 25 min to resolve on historical setting.
After I renamed the sound directory the same turn was down to an average of 11 min. That is with the
\animations on and they have not skipped a bit. Everything is running smooth for multiple turns.

I have nowwhere near as powerful a system as most of you.

800mhz celeron
196 mb Ram
OLD Voodoo 5500 graphics 64mb (note lasr driver update was 1999 or 2000) and she has not missed a lick.

My training ship crews was slow before the change, about 1min. Now it flies through at around 15sec.

Only drawback is no sound. But for the performance enhancment I will live with it.

2. Click "Start" select "Run" and type "msconfig" then click "ok", this will bring up the system config utility.

3. Select the tab "Services" and select the check box "hide all microsoft services", you should have only your anti-virus running. Any other services running?

Nope, if it's running at 4X, that means your AGP acceleration is actually running properly ... a lot of people get this glitched and end up with the card running like it is in a PCI slot without the speed of the AGP port.

Other spot you can see this is in DXDIAG where on the display tab, the AGP Texture Accelleration will show disabled.
