RE: Creating an empire!

Post by PzB74 »

It's surely true that the Allies didn't perform massive ASW missions early in the war. They didn't have the training and resources to do so.
A house rule limiting asw groups is popssible:

Max 5 ships in 41 - 8 in 42 - 12 in 43 - 15 in 44 - 20 in 45.

I didn't bombard Manila today, a sub sank a dd and the tf didn't get through and is heading back home!

The replacement pilots that are swamping my elite Betty, Nell and Zero sqd's is a menace! [:(]
All reserve ac that are left behind when a Daitai transfers from one base to another, receives repacement pilots - even though
'Dont accept replacement' is turned on.

Already I got several units with crap pilots - the thing I hated most about UV has found a way into WitP!
I told Wobbly that this is a potential restart bug, at least for me. It's soooooo annoying, and there's nothing I can do to help it.
Placed a thread on the support forum!

This was an eventful turn indeed!

Malaysia and the PI

Mersing falls and a sub torpedoes and sinks a IJN destroyer not far from Lingayen! This was the bombardment group
heading for Manila - and it cancelled the run. Perhaps just as well [;)]

A few air strikes takes off against Clark Field and a sqd of Val's join in - and 2 were lost. (A mistake, since these guys
are not intended for ground attack.)

Dutch East Indies and Borneo

Dutch bombers are now hitting Davao at night, and successfully destroyed a Betty on the ground!

The bombardment of Batavia reaped little reward - a transport in port was hit. One of the escorting dd's caught a shell that
produced 25 sys damage.

A surface tf sinks 4 PT boats of Tarakan without damage to themselves!
The light cv's hit a single transport and left it a burning hulk.

but it was the appearence of Wobbly's cv(s) between Truk, Palau and New Guinea that really spiced up the turn!!!
I have no idea how he managed to sneak in between Rabaul, Kwajalein and Truk! Hm, a bit magic and luck usually
goes hand in hand.

2 dive bomber strikes against a troop convoy heading for Kendari causes a lot of carnage! (The South Seas Detachment is aboard)
8 ships or so receives medium to heavy damage, even though non of them sinks - yet.

A series of measures were put into effect;

1. The convoy is ordered to disperse, the troop transports gets an pc escort each and are heading for friendly ports
The damaged escorts are ordered to head towards the enemy cv(s).
2. Other tf's in the area are either disbanded or turned away from the immediate threat.
3. More Mavis search planes are transferred to Palau and Truk.
4. Zero's and Nells/Betties are moved to Davao, Palau and Truk. There is also a presence at Rabaul and Kendari.
The light carriers are ordered to move NE towards Tarakan - I do not wish to put them into the fight unless the conditions are favourable.
5. Subs are ordered to take up blocking positions ahead and behind the enemy tf.

(see attached map)

This is a bold move by Wobbly - it will disrupt some shipping, but it will also place his cv(s) in danger! There are a lot of things that can happen now,
and as the Buffalo's and Devastator's are useless, he is depending on his deadly divebombers. If I only can get some Zero's to maul those.....
The KB is currently refueling south of Hawaii, and will not be ordered east until their original mission has been completed.

RE: Creating an empire!

Post by PzB74 »

Tension builds as the Lexington tf moves NW between Truk and New Guinea!! [:-]
The cunning little kiwi is really trying to make life miserable for me....

My plan is working - for now! 2 damaged escorts were the only ships sunk by the cv's
today. Search planes identified the Lady Lex, and 2 strikes were launched from Palau!
The Nells were attacking at long range, escorted by Zero's - they failed to score any hits,
but 5 Buffalo's were lost.

More Zero's and torpedo bombers have been put in place, and I think All will keep away from Palau.
I've put together Operation Shogun! (see map)
The light carriers will meet with a surface tf that is to provide a heavy eascort. It will also refuel
from a replenishment tf just west of Kendari. More Zero's, Val's and Kate's are being transferred
to the carriers - and I'll be able to mount as many as 120!! ac. Since I got quality on my side and
is fighting on home turf, I hope to show the audacious kiwi a thing or two! [:D] <evil laughter!>

Other news from the front;

Land, sea & air

Burma

Tavoy falls and the base force retreats towards Rangoon!
(I'm trying to hatch out a plan that involves India...why go to such extreme pains to secure the
south Pacific when India is ripe for the picking? The Imperial Navy will clense the Indian Ocean, and
the brunt of the forces now engaged in the occupation of PI, Burma, Malaysia and the Dutch West Indies,
should enable me to capture important bases and secure more oil and resources for the Empire!)

Malaysia

Dutch torpedo bombers based at Singapore hits my bombardment group led by the Kongo!
I swallow a few times as the torpedoes barely miss the big ships - but an unfortunate destroyer
catches 2 and sinks in minutes!

Borneo

Pontianak also falls, but this was a close one! An ABDA force containing several cruisers and destroyers
attacked the transports and sank a msw and a destroyer. Fortunatly the transports had unloaded their
troops and were able to hide in the darkness of the night.

(Nells managed to severely damage one of the offending destroyers next morning)

China

Yenen is receiving and awaiting further reinforcements - the final assault will commence shortly.

Philippines

San Marcelino was heavily bombarded by a battleship tf! A fresh division is currently landing at Lingayen,
and the div at Hong Kong is currently loading.

Wobbly sends the remainder of his PT boats to Legaspi to hit the supply convoy that's unloading there!
I also got a surface group there as cover, and they sink 3 of the little pests without losses.

Rain, t-storms and zero visibility - that's what most of the central Pacific looks like today [:(]
Not a sign of the cv's - so I have to stick to my plan!

Only a few things worth mentioning today;

The uber deadly asw force outside PH looses one of their own and takes a hit themselves.
Sub will be fine!

A mid ocean intercept not far from Wake may get Wobbly's attention - as it is the KB bb
escort that connects.

Johore Bharu is invaded and hopefully I can cut of Singapore soon.
An air raid succeeds in destroying some of the ac left there. Moving in base forces to most of the bases
in Malaysia now, and should soon be safe from the bothersome Blenheims.

2 armored units are pushed out of Clark Field - I've not learned to use the 'follow this unit' button yet [:'(]
I am now...

PzB;

Very good AAR. I have a suggestion while it is still early. How about a VERY brief day by day (or week by week) summary of major events at the top of the thread that you can edit as time goes by....like:

12/7/41
Amphibious invasions of:
Wake Island
Guam
Tarawa
Rabaul
Kuching
Khota Baru
Naga
Batan Island
Vigan
Legaspi
Aparri
Davao
Jolo
Lingayen
Kuantan

Wake falls 1877 captured

12-8-41

SS KVII reported destroyed in South China Sea

etc etc

Perhaps a running ship tally?? Anyway just an idea. Maybe even a map getting more red as Japs take territory?

Thx for the input Mandrake [:)]
Your idea is according to what I've been trying to move towards! I'm writing a short precise at the beginning of each
post that summarizes the most important happenings.

The problem is that less and less invasions takes place, and it's time consuming to create headlines for single events,
so I'm trying to put focus on the most important tings.

It's a good idea to present tallies, perhaps I can do it at the end of each month. Posting a huuge map each day would
also exceed capacity - but again, a montly sit rep could be the solution.

Appreciate all comments and suggestions - I still got a lot to learn about WitP, so pls fill in my blancs! I'm posting questions
as we go!

What do you readers think about todays approach? I will only post the major happenings and don't paste in the full aar text!
I will not always have time for this, but it could be a good change from the long text posts.

Still only in week 2, and I'm actually quite pleased with the rapid conquests in China, Malaya, Borneo and in the Philippines.
Here are the most important events for 19th of December;

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/19/41

Air attacks

Day Air attack on Singapore by 74 bombers causes heavy damage. 19 ac reported destroyed on the ground,
only a few of the attacking ac were damaged.

Day Air attack on 15th Indian Brigade based at Alor Star by 76 bombers. 89 casualties and 2 guns were the
damage estimate. No losses to the attackers.

Dutch bombers fly 34 bomber sorties against a surface tf just east of Balikpapaan. No hits were scored
and 2 bombers were shot down and another 5 damaged.

Another US carrier appears just SE of Shortland and launches 30 divebombers against a fast transport tf
about to unload. 4 ships are hit, one ml is in serious trouble. 173 casualties were reported. The attackers
didn't suffer any losses.

(The ft actually refused to unload at Shortland, and stayed in the same hex for 2 days. Yesterday I changed
it into a normal transport tf, and it moved in - but too late! Is this a bug? I've had problems with fast transports
before.)

Surface action

SS KXV hits AP Seizan Maru with a torpedo NW of Miri. 30 Casualties reported.
Ship i carrying a construction unit bound for Borneo. Will stay with the convoy.

The transport Dos Hermanos is tracked down and destroyed by the KB's battleship escort
that is now acting as surface raiders. At 20-24000 yards heavy shells slammed into the
unfortunate ship and left her a burning hulk. This took place not far from Wake Isl.

No sight of the Lexington - so Shogun is still on. 8 Val's landed on a cve and are moving east,
there may be a clash tomorrow if Wobbly hasn't turned his cv around....

The KB can't find anything to destroy [:(] Is the enemy tracking us?
I don't give up and fly after the US cv's that have been sighted between Shortland and Truk.
They're too far away, and I'm going to stick to my original plan. Having the worlds most powerful
cv tf in the area must be a terrible headache for the Allied Supreme Command [8D]

Land combat

Chinese troops moved into hex 47,35 north of Changsa and attempted to cut the railroad
connection. 13000 Japanese troops attacked the intruders and sent them running. 114 Japanese
and 221 Chinese causalties were reported.

A last bombardment attack took place at Yenen in northern China! 360 Chinese casualties.
Tomorrow there will be a deliberate attack. 120000 men will participate, and it is expected that
the base will fall. Most of the troops will then march south to clear the railroad south of Changsa.

Cotabato just north of Dava in the PI, was captured and the garrison retreated north.

The first deliberate attack at Johore Bahru in Malaya met with heavy resistance and suffered 674 casualties.
Only 180 Allied troops were incapacitated, but the forts were reduced from size 5 to 4.
1 full division + support troops are marching from Mersing, and will join the fight in a few days.

When Johore has been secured, the troops will rest and wait for the northern group to mop up.
2 full divisions and 3 bde's + support units will attack at Alor Star in about one week.

-------------end of combat report--------------

I wish to post a picture of one of my 'crack' Zero Daitai's - former crack Zero Daitai is probably more
precise. After moving the group, new pilots were drawn from the pools to man the reserve ac, and I
now got a partially ruined Daitai [:(]

I'm actually hesistant about moving a much needed Betty group, cause it has 27 ready ac, 9 in reserve
and only 27 pilots. 9 greenhorns will immediately be assigned to te reserve ac when I move it!!

Does anyone know a way around this terrible dilemma?

Yes...an apparent solution to your problem can be found in the strategy devised by Milo Minderbender in Catch 22. When the Germans wished to bomb an American airbase in Italy, Minderbender convinced them it would be more efficient to hire American planes to do the bombing for them, thereby avoiding the cost of fuel and ordinance, reducing the burden on their supply system and, of course, the risk to their pilots. Conversely, the Americans would likely surprise the AA gunners, greatly reducing ammo expenditure while maintaing a high state of readiness among the air crews. And there was the added bonus of the cash, which could be used to improve creature comforts at the base.

Park all of the reserve aircraft together (away from barracks, etc) then hire one of your own groups to hit the parked reserve aircraft...et voila

BTW...cool write up! Great fun to read. As for a serious answer...do you have an experienced Betty group that is pilot rich, but plane poor? You could move the pilot rich group and merge them?

Guess I have to do the best out of the problem with excessive pilot replacements.
This is my plan; Move all sqd's with a lot of reserve ac and receive green replacement pilots. As I got a lot of good pilots, I can live with this for now - especially
since the enemy is still weak! The rookies will all be trained sometime in mid 42, and when the going gets though I'll have a reasonably big reserve of pilots and will be
better able to control the reinforcements that do end up in the pool.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/20/41

Land

China

The attack at Yenen was carried out - but didn't not achieve initial success!
108972 troops attacked a garrison consisting of 44800 Chinese troops and only
achieved a 1-1 odds. Attackers lost 953 casualties while the defenders lost 585.
Defending force 44858 troops, 325 guns, 0 vehicles

A shock attack has been ordered for tomorrow as the high command is growing impatient
and demands results. The oil and resources at Yenen are needed to fuel the war machine.

Malaya

Another attack at Johore Bahru reduced the forts from lvl 4 to 3.
21500 troops attacked the 8500 strong garrison and lost 366 to 55 casualties.
Another attack has been ordered and reinforcements from Mersing will arrive in a day or two.

Air

Hudsons attacked the cl Natori off the northern end of New Guinea and scored a hit - but the bomb failed to inflict damage.

Sea

Balikpapan was hit by a bombardment tf made up of cruisers and destroyers.
7 ac reported destroyed and 3 transports + 1 destroyer were hit and damaged in port.
170 casualties reported, including 7 guns and 4 vehicles.

Situation Report

The enemy carriers operating east and south east of New Guinea were not spotted, but more search planes
have been transferred into the area. Zero's and bombers are now in place at Davao, Palau, Truk and Rabaul.
My light carriers will proceed towards Truk - hugging the east coast of NG. A small tf made up of the cruiser
Natori and a destroyer will scout ahead of the carriers.

This is a cat and mouse game, and I'll play

Subs operating between Hawaii and the US West Coast operates Glen search planes and spotted a few tf's today.
I want to bag something in this area and spread as much uncertainty as possible - so the KB will remain in the area.

The ships that made up the transport tf that was hit south of Palau, have now reached port and unloaded 90% of the
troops they were carrying. I'm happy that the elite South Seas Detachment wasn't lost altogether. One of the transports
actually sank at anchor today at Ponape, but the troops managed to evacuate just in time.

Hm, who is the hunter and who's the hunted - that's actually a pretty good question right now.....guess we'll find out soon [;)]

Had to go out of town for a few days, so here is an update for the last 2 turns!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/21-22/41

Land

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Malaya

Another deliberate attack at Johore Bahru fails to reduce the forts (3).
The 2 attacking bde's were ordered to rest the next day, as full division will arrive
and help defeat the defending garrison.

351 IJa casualties reported Guns lost 9
142 Allies casualties reported Guns lost 7

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

China

Yenen was captured!!
A Japanese Shock attack finally achieved a 2-1 odds and added the resource and industry rich base
to the glorious Japanese Empire.

107661 IJA troops, 1209 guns, 12 vehicles shock attacked 43268 Chinese troops, 311 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0) - Yenen base is captured!!!
Japanese ground losses: 1967 casualties reported Guns lost 41 Vehicles lost 3
Allied ground losses: 639 casualties reported Guns lost 8

15600 Chinese troops attacked at Pakhoi, but were repulsed by the 8300 IJA defenders!
332 to 110 casualties were suffered.

Bombardment attacks finding place in Nanning, have to eject the Chinese intruders soon

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philippines

Ground combat at Clark Field

A Jap bde, 15000 men strong, advanced into Clark field and was repulsed by the 21000 men strong allied garrison.
604 Japanese casualties and 27 guns were lost to 272 allied ones including 12 guns.

(Another failure from my part to coordinate the forces that are advancing towards Clark Field from many different bases.
I find it difficult to order all troops to move in together.)

The bde suffered heavy disruption and will now rest and prepare for the final assault on Bataan in a few months.

Miri invaded and occupied without resistance

All bombers received damage, but none were lost.

No enemy contacts reported

Situation Report

No sign of Wobbly's cv's - the weather is still very bad [:(]
The light cv's have been ordered to return to Kendari and continue their hunt for allied ships in the area.
It is suspected that the enemy wants to lure us away on a ghost chase.

If I were Wobbly, I would have merged the 2 cv's and headed up the slot between Oz and NG in an attempt to catch
the Japs off guard.

The KB will continue to harass the shipping lanes - in another week or so they will start to move west again.
Perhaps a visit to New Zealand would catch the good kiwi off guard [;)]
The ocean is too big to play seek and hide, so I'll follow my own plans and don't run after enemy cv's that are most likely
to evade me anyway.

Preparing to attack Clark Field and Manila with heavy forces. If I can split up the defenders, the remaining bases should fall easier.
Alot Star will be attacked by strong forces tomorrow, the same will Johore Bahru.
The situation in China is stabilizing, and troops are marching south from Yenen towards Changsa. We will drive the communist rabble into the
hinterland!! There they can guard their dust roads and cattle all they wish.... [:D]

Ok, here it goes! My first WitP PBEM game against my old esteemed opponent Wobbly [8D]
It may be a little ambitious, I've not played more than 15-20 test turns against the AI before starting this scen 15 as Japan!
I have studied the game, it's manual - and not at least - all the excellent posts on the forums! This, plus previous UV experience gave me enough confidence to give it a try.

Learning as you go is one of my favorite approaches, but I'll undoubtedly make a lot of mistakes....
I'd appreciate if the readers post questions or try to answer the questions I post! [:)]
Wobbly talked about creating a seperate thread for his part of the AAR, but I'll leave that to him!

Greetings!

Glad to "see" you again, but in the WiTP forum...
I'm looking forward to read your AAR (same as in UV), and i like your approach to the PBEM playing. By that i mean that i already set similar plan for myself - I will read manual and just play couple of turns against AI and then start PBEM....

PS
I think that older version of your AAR was better, it was easier to follow battles from combatreport.exe, but this is my humble opinion...

Thx Pauk - rewriting the aar is somewhat time consuming, so I'll try a few different approaches.
Alot of non essential stuff in the combat.txt, so I may simply edit it a bit.

The simplest way is usually the best...!

Good luck with your games, hopefully you can avoid a few of my newbie mistakes by reading this aar [:)]

Situation Report

In all a good day - Alor Starr holds on, but otherwise the going is good.
2 Allied tf's were spotted north and south of Gili Gili - these are the 2 US carriers.
(As I guess yesterday - wobbly, the son of a cow - will join his cv's and sail north.)
Subs are moving into position.

170000 troops are now in place at Lingayen, and most of them will enter Clark Field tomorrow.
Another force is heading for Manila - divide and conquer, BANZAI!

The Imp Div joined the action at Alor Starr, and the Allied presence in Malaya should soon
be wiped out. Then I can concentrate of fortress Singapore. Extreme and continous bad weather
prevents any airstrikes.

Strong surface units are moving towards the Dutch bases. Wobbly is clearly trying to move
resources out of Palembang - and there are a lot of ships at anchor in Soerabaja.

More Nells and Betties will soon move west, but a bomber/fighter presence will be upheld
at Palau, Truk and Rabaul - that will keep my outer perimeter safe. Got a lot of shipping
going through the area.

The KB continues to search the shipping lanes, but are now heading towards more westernly.
shores.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/24/41

Land

Not a good day for land combat! Two deliberate attacks gets 3-1 odds, but fails
to capture Alor Starr and Cagayen. Will have to do it again tomorrow.
A counterattack at Nanning also suffers heavy casualties, and I have to be content
with bombardment attacks.

Seems like the rain makes the going though - raining all over the Pacific. Only clear spot
is on the US West Coast, and around the KB, cause Wobbly says he have spotted it several
times!

Does anyone else have problems with the follow command? Yesterday the troops at Lingayen
had followed a division towards Clark Field and had marched 30 odd miles. Today it was only 8??

Situation Report

Have to be patient while my troops slowly slug it out. Need more Zero's to upgrade
my Claude sqd's. The KB is ordered WSW. The Allied carrier(s) may be heading up
towards Timor - and if I manage to hurt them, I'll send the KB in pursuit.

A landing group and base force are heading towards Ambon - I want the airfields and put
more bombers on guard. It's also a must to destroy allied search planes and get rid of the
annoying Hudsons that land the occasional bomb hit.

In the meantime I'm thinking about my great Indian gamble! I'm almost convinced, I'll send
smaller units into the South Pacific, perhaps capture PM and start building forts.

There are a lot of ships unloading troops into Rangoon - and that's good! I'll cut it off and
land a mighty force that will crack open the gates and then land by sea, air and ground!

What does the rest of you say? India got more resources, industry and oil than the great
Nip Empire can make use of [8D] - The local sepos should be no match for the fierce warriors
of the Sun!

Situation Report

The weather should improve tomorrow - and heavy air units have been ordered
to attack Clark Field.

Wobbly says that the Lexington is down to 8 fighters - he may very well sail the ship
to Oz now to replenish the airgroups. I don't mind this, then I can concentrate my forces
on enemy bases and shipping.

The Chinese troops that marched into the base south of Nanning can't escape according to
wobbly - how convenient!

More troops spotted around Rangoon - and I'm in the process of hatching out a most evil
plan!-)

To be continued...........

Situation Report

The Dutch light cruiser Java takes a torpedo, but other attacks fails. The small carriers
are heading NW away from Ambonia in an attempt to cut of allied forces scuttling around
Borneo and Java.

A small invasion of Ambonia gets quite a lot of attention as I got heavy surface units
that I don't want to send to Java/Borneo without aircover. The initial landing force
turns out to be inadequate to capture the base, so heavy bombardment attacks takes
place until the South Seas attachment (Yes, the one that evil Kiwi almost sent to the bottom;)
and another NLF unit can be unloaded.

The Allied carriers have not been spotted, and are probably in some Oz base refitting their
airgroups. (A sub screen is still in place in the corridor between NG and Oz though)

The KB is heading west, and Wobbly is worried because he hasn't spotted them resently.
Perhaps I can wreck havoc on shipping around New Zealand, Fiji and Oz? Will depend on
how much I need em in other theaters.

Troops heading for Clark Field repells a counterattack, and in another day and two, 150000
troops will commence deliberate attacks. (Even my divisions march at different pace, making
it so hard to coordinate their advance.)

Cagayen and Brunei have been captured, and Dutch bombers are busy bombing the oil facilities
in the latter. Air ubits will soon be in place to prevent this. The forces defending Brunei had nowhere
to retreat to, and I thought they would surrender as I had captured the bases in the vicinity.
This was not the case though...annoying to have enemy troops marching around in the wilderness [:(]

Most of the Allied forces north of Singapore are not isolated at Georgetown and
Taipeng. Nells sank 2 msw's heading towards Georgetown? I'm suspecting an allied
evacuation attempt. 2 destroyers have been dispatched immediately, while
stronger forces are sent from Saigon.

Zero's and Betty's are now stationed in Tavoy, south of Rangoon. Hopefully I will
bag both allied ships and troops. Weather is again my enemy, nothing but heavy

Situation Report

The evacuation of Georgetown came to naught [:D]
Bombers and surface units hammered the happless convoy, and the surviving ships
retreated back to sea! A perfect coordinated attack were airstrikes sank the only escort, the light
cruiser Durban. Several transports were also hit, before 2 destroyers added to the carnage.

A lot of Buffalos' and Nates' were lost today, but the loss statistics say only 15 of each were write offs.
I have ordered a Zero sweep over Clark tomorrow - don't understand why they don't fly escort....(

Most of the troops at Lingayen will march into Clark Field tomorrow and start bombarding the place for
a week before starting deliberate attacks. A lot of arty and engineers are in place, so I hope to make short
process of the defenses.

Situation Report

The old year ends quite well for the Empire! Wobbly is quite active sending ships
all around the SRA. He pays for it dearely as most of my torpedo bombers takes to
the air!

Interesting situation around Georgetown as Kuala Lumpure is captured and 11000 Allied
troops surrender. It should be possible to capture most of the remaining troops in Malaya as well.
Surface forces will stand guard to prevent any attempt at evacuation.

Ambonia seems to be on the brink of capitulating, and I'm contemplating an invasion of southern
Borneo as soon as this is a fact. Today minelayers are mining the remaining Dutch bases there.

Tomorrow we will commit a New Years attack on Clark Field - an immediate attack has been ordered
in an attempt to 'blitz' the place.

In Changsa 150k IJA troops are resting and receiving reinforcements. The army will march south and
repel the Chinese from the railroad line sometime in January!

Since this turn was the last in 1941, I will post some statistics, maps etc. They can be found in seperate
threads.

Malaya is about to succumb completely - the only question is; How long can the remaining forces hold out, and can Wobbly save any of them?

I'm prepared to spend some time reducing the forts in the Phillippines, but I hope to capture entire Borneo
soon. Then we can slowly start the march down New Guinea and land on Java and the remaining Dutch bases.
