Very interesting about AT and AA behaviour. I have noticed my worst casualites have been from unexpected angles or flanking fire nowhere near the objective.
In the game one way to deal with it is to divide your artillery so the attacking force gets some exclusively for itself - this will get used mainly on the objective - and you keep hold of a substantial reserve that you can use to smash flank threats during the assault. For example, if it's a brigade assault, you might want to give one regiment of artillery to the brigade and tick 'Arty Direct Spt Only' - keep the other two regiments in the division for yourself to use against flank threats.
