OK, what about radar? I do think that by this time a vectoring system could easily have been in place, heck the early night raids historically where intercepted, not too successfully though..

So, a night raid is my alternative (to putting all the B-29's on transports and scuttling them). I'll try that!

DP - How experienced were your B-29 pilots? Did they have many missions before this one? The more experience your bomber pilots get, the better they do against interceptors. My feeling is that interceptor/bomber confrontations are modelled in a similar manner to that of fighter/fighter, so that bomber pilot experience counts for more even though the bombers obviously aren't dogfighting. Give your bomber squadrens a dozen or more runs against relatively "soft" targets before you send them up against a strong defense, and even then, go after the airfields first and everything else later.
