Not my deployment orders, but I am now officially assigned to the unit. Still waiting on my orders to link up with my unit down in Hood. Right now they have me assigned to rear detachment.

HEHE, I will let Ron post the results for turn 2.

I suck at posting and this post SUCKs!! so Dave can do the honours[:@] Curse of having to redo turn one a dozen times because of endless requirements to restart because of bugs. Forgot to change CAP and speed levels on the Enterprise and Lexington TFs. Halsey's dead and Enterprise is gone because I thought I had but must have been in another life. One of the few leaders which did not Fack off on me. Leaders are so bad BGen Wavell is the CO of Sailfish![8|] Whatever. Good thing this is a test as a mistake like that on turn one blows![:)]

Boise runs into an unescorted TR TF at Davao and sinks two APs. Gonna fire the gunnery officer when he gets back as he fails to fire on the other 90% of the visible TF.

CV Enterprise of the Essex class is laid down at the Add,Water and Stir yards in California. This ship will stay in SF forever as this a non respawning scenario.

9 Dec 1941

Today was chock full of surface battles. Ron has decided to come out and play fast and early. Since Ron got bit by the forget to reset speeds, so did I or else we would have had a monster surface battle at Kuching. As it is, he got away.

Absolutely brutal bite! Big fleet carrier for nothing. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Ratzafrackenbrickabracken!!![:@] Gonna hurt for a long time. Bwhaaaaah!

Now I've tons of Japs commanding ships.[&:]

I'm always perturbed when my surface action groups go into a hex and repeatedly get surprised while expecting combat. Especially twice in a row the same night vs the same enemy TF. Brit MTBs did OK though.

Isuzu's magazines exploded with first penetrating hit!

ASW is working alot better. I left all those subs parked there for a few days to give you a crack at them to see what effect your changes have made.

You have alot of note taking to do this turn.

Oh and for the people reading this. I did not post the results of the turn Ron was cursing about. I put KB to full speed and made a speed run to about 2 hexes from Parylma island and caught Enterprise at my max range. She ate about 50 250kg bombs before sinking.
She took her entire air group down with her.

Now to find the Lexington.

A little early to tell but ASW does seem a bit better. Less DDs finding a good contact and a lot less multiple hits so far. Of five ASW TFs attacking 5 subs (4DD perTF) one sub was hit with only two DCs but was sunk. Aircraft attacking subs is another matter entirely. I've always believed that the number of sighting and attacks should be toned down. It's like the subs are on a daylight pleasure cruise in enemy waters. Should be assumed that subs spend most of their time submerged during daylight 60 miles off enemy bases. They are subs after all.

Weird airgroup targeting continues. Dave sent a large BB TF into the Java Sea and they only attract a few bombers. Seems that bombergroups never attack the closest target and spread themselves out instead of acting as a unit.

Dave, post your results, please. I'd be interested to see how they differ from mine.

Strange, in my game I have yet to see any aircraft attack a sub. Maybe half-a-dozen spottings up to mid-July '42 but not a single attack. Since I'm playing against the AI, I wonder is there are different routines used in solo games than in PBEM games.

Weird airgroup targeting continues. Dave sent a large BB TF into the Java Sea and they only attract a few bombers. Seems that bombergroups never attack the closest target and spread themselves out instead of acting as a unit.

Dutch air units seem to like to spread their attacks around.

So far, in my 1.3 scenario 27, I have had 6 sub sightings by aircraft, and not one single attack.

And, thanks to turning Allied Sub Doctrine off, my subs are kicking ass! Now if I can just get rid of those damned Mk XIV torpedoes.

The Dutch have had more dud torpedos than the Americans in our game.[:@]

I left all the Japanese subs around PH for 3 days to give Ron something to shoot at and test the ASW routines. His a/c have been spotting and attacking my subs like there is no tomorrow. I have 4 damaged subs now making their way to port because of air attack.

Now that I have dispersed them, we shall see if the spotting goes down some. I am going to deliberatly keep them close to PH though ranging out to 5 hexes around there to see the results.

At least the Allied ships in his ASW TF's are not killing everything they trip over as per usual. They are making attacks and have even fired off DC every once in a while without a hit. Normally, that would be a dead sub.

In our PBEM v1.3 both sides have multiple sub sightings _every_ turn. As of 4-1-42, Allies have lost 5 subs....3 from ASW and 2 from plane launched torpedoes. The Japanese have lost 15 subs...all from ASW.

This one is a beta version for lack of a better word for it of the scenario Ron/Tankerace?Don Bowen are working on. Ron lowered ASW ratings and such to try and tone down the hyper ASW.

It is not a stock 1.3 game using Lemurs mod, but a plus version.

What I noticed in my replay were AKsGovernor Wood and Governor Wright being destroyed by air attack, but the AVD Heron and sidekick were actually destroyed. Would have been nice if CV Enterprise was simply a replay glitch![:D]

Nah, I enjoyed that one too much. Now if only I can find Lexington, that would be a grand start to this game.[X(]

I noticed ya waited to post the report until after I witnessed it. You were right about two things. Yes it pissed me off but really I'm not shocked or mystified by anything with this darn game anymore. Repetition breeds familiarity.[8|] And yes, you are partly right about surface combat but it is not broken, it is just a poor design.

Uh...oh, is Ron about to rant? Yes.[8D]

Surface Combat. I just don't get it but I know why. I try to rationalize what is happening but you simply can't as there is no cause and effect with it. You will see the results when Dave posts it but it needs a little background.

Two turns ago he mentioned having screwed up the speed on his BB TF so a naval battle between BBs was missed at Kuching. Well, two turns later it happens in the Batavia hex. His force of 4 BBs (2 Nagatos and 2 Fusos with a CL and some DDs) entered the Java Sea and could have bombarded anywhere. This being the case, I decided to leave the remnants of Force Z (PoW, Repulse and Danae all basically 100%) at Batavia and reinforced the TF with forces at Batavia (4 Dutch DDs, and CLs Java, Dragon and Durban).

Should have been an interesting battle given my advance warning of his presence so the TF should have been on high alert yet he was ready for trouble but had no idea what he might meet. Therefore there should be no surprises, basically a battle between two prepared forces. My ships have the speed advantage, two have type 271 surface radar (a model which was proven to work in two years of combat with RN and were aboard two veteran heavies) so I figured I should be able to pull off a draw result despite the disparity in BBs given he must withdraw past concentrated LBA with torpedo bombers and my CLs should draw some heavy fire.

WRONG! I keep forgetting what game I'm playing here. Let me add that I made sure to change Force Zs home base to Soerabaja with destination as Batavia and set TF to patrol (done because the game has a glitch which makes the TF based at same hex dock when you want it to patrol). Are ya ready?[8|]

Surface combat at Batavia...Allied force is surprised! WTF? Ok, whatever, it's BS but weird things happen in combat. Remember, my side has radar. Oh, and Nagato hit a mine on the way in and as the combat screen appeared she was burning brightly! So, despite a loud boom, bright fires at night and the supposed advantage of radar, Force Z is surprised by the one TF which they knew was coming.[8|]

Get to the next round after the IJN fires it's advantage round. Fire opens at 2000 yards!!! WTF Ridiculous! Hello? This is basically impossible in real life but happens all the time because of the design. Can't wait to see all TankerAce's work go to waste when this happens. Now the bloodening begins, but one would assume Repulse would be involved. Nope. Because it's a "sixty mile hex" it is not spotted and does not fire, despite radar and range 2000 yards. PoW gets plowed but fails to hit anything. Whatever. Battle ends. With speed advantage, the undamaged survivors would retireas the battle is lost and they have speed advantage.

NOPE! Can't remember the range in the second battle but for some reason we have one. Allied force is surprised again! 2xWTF?[:@][8|][:D] So, was it tea time or something? These burning Japanese ships which can't pursue (I could see light forces getting a crack but not BBs which are at least 5 kts slower and have sufferred underwater damage (mine hit)) achieve surprise on a TF which is in a high state of "Holy Crap, that was brutal, keep your eyes peeled and watch the radar." Give me a break! You will see the results presently but basically Force Z, with only BB disparity being a disadvantage, is totally shredded.

Conclusions restated for the upteenth time over two years. Surface Combat is so poorly designed I don't know where to begin, especially for a naval game. Should never have been modelled like a Napoleonic line of battle engagement. And if it was 1805, Nelson would lose as it would not be able to model tactics. There is no cause and effect at any level except how fires attract enemy attention. Radar has no effect aside from gunfire accuracy (maybe...PoW missed at 2000 with everything except 20mm). Surprise is random and is not based on anything but a arbitrary die roll. Ranges are way too close too often and should take into account radar, fires, etc. So many things wrong I'm going to stop now. Sad.

The tweaks made to ASW are working like a charm so far.

Justin. Something weird happening with DD 66 Allen. It is in an ASW TF with three other DDs and while it detects subs, it does not show up as an attacker and is not listed in the combat reports. Gonna see if there is anything funny with the Sampson class data.

Does it matter?[8|][:D] Tennant or Leach if leader bug was not an issue. Japanese, can't remember. You can be aggressive as hell but if you are driving a 25 yr old pickup, don't expect any sort of fist pounding to allow ya to catch a Bentley and a Silver Ghost.
