The war is 7 days old now.

And right after I say all is quiet in Malaya, the Japs land in Khota Baru finally. The Imperial Guard is sighted at Tavoy. The ancient RN ships get their ass in gear to bombard, but at the rate they move it'll be a while yet, they are still almost at the Indian coast [:(]. Singapore still has teeth, as Fuso and Yamashiro find out. They got three lines of subs to walk over on the way home. [:D]

Elsewhere, Hong Kong falls. Air combat over Clark Field for the 7th day in a row, but this time the Warhawks have the upper hand - and actually the USAF there is doing pretty well, given I switched off replacements in turn 1. The Chinese are maintaining a good kill ratio behind the walls of Yenen - and as Chinese troops are, to be crass, free, and Japs are not, sounds good.

Fortress crews apparently don't like being demoted to bus drivers, as after lots of supply missions from Chandpur -> China, their morale is really low. So they are getting R&R for a while.

Recon from Rabaul suggests that the Admiralty Islands is now empty though flying a Jap flag. ...I dunno what his plans are down there. Having a peer at Lae now. Probably be able to drop a small Aussie force in Lunga in about 10 days as the APs crawl across the map. While the South Pacific is dead, the Central Pacific isnt, I see lots of threatening aircraft markers there now. Efforts there are limited to mine warfare ops, both offensive with subs and defensive at Midway.

I think it's gonna take me most of another week to get this northern Malaya evac sorted out. I hope there is enough time. I have had a force headed to Timor for some time too, but it's not in position yet to cover the southern SRA which looks to be under threat very soon.

Start doing air strikes on the Imperial Guard. Anything that drives up fatigue and disruption is good.

Use the full speed setting. No need to worry about system damage. You have all game to repair it.[:D]

Maybe detach the CA's and some DD's, they can speed run at 30 knots.

Lots of angry red east of Yenen makes me think the Kwangtung Army is on its way. I'm sending several corps of Chinese in various movements to the east at various points hoping to harass and cut supply lines. A unit is spotted headed NW from Hanoi presumably and there is some activity around Changsha too so it looks like a heavy blow is about to fall on China.

The torpedo bombers at Singers are at the limit of their endurance and don't fly today, despite Jap ships all over the place. On the plus side, a raid on Singapore by a handful of Nells suffers one loss to the Buffalo CAP and promptly runs away, so I think his pilots are feeling the burn too.

RN battlewagons draw nearer to Tavoy... The destroyer/cruiser force I am planning on an evac from Georgetown with are somewhere west of Sumatra still four days to go before they can actually do the deed I reckon.

Next turn the Forts in Chandpur are sort of quasi combat ready (ie, not really with morale 50, but I'm gonna use em anyway) and are going to bring gifts to the Imperial Guard. Two Chinese corps start a long march east from that road junction north of Yenen in an attempt to cut supply lines and hold up the enemy advance. Yenen, unfortunately, is a bit off the beaten track transport wise and so I consider the city expendable, I'll hold it for as long as I can and then plan on pulling back west. I just noticed that the fort level at Yenen is low, and yet the outnumbered Chinese are kicking some serious ass. I figure the Japs are tired after a long walk. Bombers are allocated to make sure they stay tired.

His heavy ships have been sitting in Mersing ever since the invasion. I'm not quite sure why - maybe he's scared the Repulse will be coming back? Maybe he's wary of the sub infestation in the seas around there? Either way, bad move, as today the stringbags exact revenge for the Prince of Wales. A torpedo causes a magazine explosion and BB Fuso goes down.

At Pearl the ASW efforts are going quite well. His submarines are taking some serious beating. On the other hand just about every USN destroyer to hand is involved in the effort, so I suppose he's happy they aren't elsewhere.

...I notice that Russian bases appear available when I am attempting to transfer aircraft around. Does this mean that with 1.4 I can send Allied aircraft to Russian bases?

I don't know what possessed him to park his BBs in Mersing one hex from Singers, but he's noticed this error with the loss of Fuso and is moving out. On the way out, Yamashiro is the next to eat stringbag torpedo, but it doesn't look like a particularly devastating blow. Yamashiro has to run the sub gauntlet now which is now claiming regular hits.
I think all in all so far I'm happy with the defence of Malaysia, he's lost two BBs now, one with heavy damage after a surface fight with Force Z, and now Yamashiro having to run over two, maybe three subs post-torpedoing. He has paid for loitering too near Singapore, even five Swordfish can put the hurt on.

In fact I am generally happy with the progress of the war on all fronts. He's losing subs quite heavily around Pearl Harbour now. For the loss of DD Monaghan and a torp into DM Preble, who will survive, he's lost about 5 or so subs now and several damaged I think. The waters are almost clear. And the air war is going my way too more or less - Buffalos inflict losses on bombers over Singapore despite heavy Zero escort, and the AVG is playing with the Jap air force in China where embarassingly useless Nates do bugger all to stop them.

I'm starting to pick up reinforcements, got some Aussies ready to go in Brisbane and a US division arrives at San Fran, but I got a serious transport ship shortage. Most of the Philippines transports have escaped, some are just pulling into Darwin now but they aint no good there. The first wave is about to land at Pearl Harbour and not too soon, which is getting low on supply with all the mouths to feed there.

The BB Revenge is now about 180 miles from Tavoy and closing at full speed. The bombardment should go in tomorrow. A third of the AVG is flying CAP over her and 15 Buffalos fly CAP over Rangoon just in case.

Another Japanese sub goes down at Pearl. I think he's making a mistake here, he's fighting about 25-30 DDs around Pearl, surely he wants to hit where the ASW forces are not massed. The west coast is pretty bare of ASW for example, though he'd have more sea to cover. He's losing at least one sub a day in the very unfriendly waters around Pearl.
Meanwhile Allied subs are routinely working on his APs now, to my joy.

The Tavoy bombardments get underway today, and will continue from Rangoon until I see nasty red aircraft markers nearby. The evac of Malaysia from Georgetown is happening in two days. The Hermes is despite my better judgement sitting at the halfway point between Ceylon and Sumatra, just in case. The Singers Buffalos get a mauling today in revenge for yesterday, though its not as bad as the combat report makes out.

High intensity submarine warfare this turn. At this rate the IJN isn't going to have any submarines left before long... Mass Catalina ASW efforts only show one IJN sub left in the waters around Pearl. An 8 DD hunter-killer group is dispatched to deal with it, the remainder return to Pearl to regroup for future assignment. As luck would have it the first convoy from the West Coast will arrive at Pearl in a day or two as well. I like the timing...
Elsewhere I lose 1 S boat (to, I believe, a major, possibly air combat taskforce SE of Luzon) and a Salmon class catches two depth charges but may survive, depending on luck. Mini KB remains between Luzon and Borneo, which suits me as nothing is around there. I am neither reinforcing nor evacuating the DEI, though a few AKs of supplies have been exchanged for some TKs of fuel docking at Aus. The first US supply convoys (and two CV) reach Suva.

The Malay campaign still burns away. The British are exacting a good kill ratio (so are the yanks at Naga) but air superiority has been lost over Singapore. It is the beginning of the end I fear. Operation Escapade is on pause. I have decided to do a proper job rather than a halfassed job, as I judge there is time enough. A few APs, a couple of TKs and an AK of supplies are going to Andaman Island, which will be a rest stop. A light force of cruisers will do the run between Georgetown and Andaman, and then the slower merchants will carry the evacuees the rest of the way. It'll take a while longer to sort out, most of a week maybe, but I think Malaysia can wait that long, fingers crossed.

Operation Escapade draws a little nearer activation. I'm going to sneak away a base force first from Georgetown so I can put some Buffalo CAP up on Andaman Island just in case he has ideas. Fuel will be a problem though - tankers are so goddamn slow. Note to self : forward planning is important. A couple of TKs are burning out every fan in their turbines to get themselves there.

Another Jap sub bites the dust near Pearl - and two more appear. They are like bloody weeds. The Japs have lost 9 or 10 subs now for 2 of mine, for very little gain.

Two US CVs leave Suva, headed for Noumea. Once there, they arent going to do much of interest. They are going to sit there for quite a few months I suspect. A third CV is coming along, but much more slowly as its part of an escort TF on ASW duty. What a comedown for those crack Dauntless pilots, to hunt subs.

I have noticed a large amount of shipping at Khota Baru, many, many Jap CAs sighted. The RAF torpedo bomber force is sort of recovered morale wise, so next turn a massive attack has been organised. The RAFs full "might" - 5 Swordfish, 9 Vildebeest, 1 Beaufort - are being moved Up North to attack with all the CAP and escorts I could muster. I hope to add a cruiser to the bag, the stringbags have done me proud so far.

There is a big wodge of supplies coming to Noumea, the carriers just outran them, being faster. When the time to put the pressure on Japan arrives, I plan on the Solomons being the crux of the effort rather than the Central Pacific, which strikes me as harder to exploit given the distances between suitable airbases.

The AA upgrades take some time in arriving IIRC, March 42? Noumea should be all supplied and ready to go by then. Noumea should be all supplied and fuelled up by Christmas hopefully.

Mind you you have a good point, Noumeas port is tiny and it won't be building fast, I guess it'd be best for them to go all the way to Sydney or Auckland so they can upgrade and repair quicker.

I'd plan to go Tarawa->Majuro->Kwajalein->Eniwetok->Marianas. It seems to me that theres is no point in using the NG/Solomons route unless you actually intend to take Truk. Just by-passing it doesn't buy you anything over the Marshalls route.

The other option is to go Darwin->Amboina/Kendari->Morotai/Menado->Palau->Ulithi->Marianas. Which to me seems too much like hard work. If you're going that way you might as well make the Philippines the main objective and forget the Marianas totally.

I'd plan to go Tarawa->Majuro->Kwajalein->Eniwetok->Marianas. It seems to me that theres is no point in using the NG/Solomons route unless you actually intend to take Truk. Just by-passing it doesn't buy you anything over the Marshalls route.

The other option is to go Darwin->Amboina/Kendari->Morotai/Menado->Palau->Ulithi->Marianas. Which to me seems too much like hard work. If you're going that way you might as well make the Philippines the main objective and forget the Marianas totally.

Boy do I ramble on sometimes ...

Thing is I've still got Rabaul, and it looks like the weight of his efforts are to the west, and possibly China. I'd like to capitalise on that if at all possible. I dunno what he's doing at the moment but on the second run from the West Coast I'll be getting two US divisions in theatre, if I can plonk those in Rabaul and build it up I'm hoping it'll be Rabaul instead of Port Moresby which is where the front line will stabilise.

I see Rabaul in allied hands day after day, and it tempts me so. [:)]

RAF torpedo bombers put 2 torps into a DD and 1 into a CL at Khota Baru. Bad weather prevented an afternoon raid, but they are going to have another crack tomorrow. The odds on the ground slowly but surely tilt in favour of the Japanese as more troops move in and get in position.

One Aussie armour battalion (or whatever those diddy little tank groups are) heads for Port Moresby, the other heads for Lunga.

The KB is sighted at the east end of Borneo, heading west straight for Singers. Thats gonna hurt when it arrives. A line of submarines arranges a warm welcome for them - fat chance, but you never know...

The Chinese supply situation around Wuchow is horrible. Some of them are on 0 supplies for some reason. I'm pulling them back a little - as they are just going to get slaughtered if they stay where they are. Forts and Blenheim IVs are flying in supplies every day from India pretty much, but I guess it's a drop in the bucket.

Well, the KB goes over a sub - SS Seawolf. The sub puts a dud torpedo into the side of CA Nachi. Elsewhere, SS Swordfish puts a dud into the side of CA Mogami.

Theres something wrong with our bloody torpedoes today...

The KB isnt out of the woods yet though, and has a couple of Dutch subs to drive over next, assuming he holds his course - and their torps actually work.

Yenen falls. I was a bit surprised to be honest. I hope he advances, cuz there are 3 chinese corps about 120 miles NE of Yenen now, and I'd love to cut his supply if possible. I checked the Chinese supply situation, both westernmost Chinese cities have 10k of supply each.

The base force at Georgetown has been picked up as part 1 of Operation Escapade. The entrance of the KB puts a bit of a dampener on matters. I hope he parks east of Malaysia and lays waste to the ground forces there who are proving stubborn and irksome to him. I hope he does not go into the Indian Ocean and end my evac.

Japanese naval losses are about 500 points or so, mine are at ~1300. The vast majority of which is 6 BBs lost at Pearl.

Allied siginit gives a clue of what he's up to - more reinforcements for Malaysia at Songkhia. A tank regiment no less. Some subs move to mark Songhkia especially well.

The RAF torpedo bombers have done well hitting the ships he insists on keeping by the Malaysian coast, but they need a break after today so are stood down.

Decision time in Rangoon soon. I'm thinking of fast transporting a small kamikaze force from Rangoon to Tavoy, which appears to be empty, just to annoy him and delay him by cutting the Imperial Guard's supply.

A third of the AVG which was doing nothing in China has moved back to Burma. The AVG in Rangoon I may move to Andaman as soon as the base force gets there temporarily to cover my fast transports. Andaman has a small amount of fuel and supply there now, not too much as this is a temp base at best, but enough for Operation Escapade to continue without delay. Which is good, as Malaysia is really crumbling now. The days of the Union Flag flying over Georgetown are limited...

Evidently he thinks his Malaysian campaign is moving too slowly, I see a big AP convoy going for Songhkia. Operation Escapade is in operation, one fast transport load of base force has been extricated from Malaysia and is sitting on Andaman. The Andrew is turning around and having another dash. 18 Tomahawks of the AVG are at Andaman flying CAP, another 20 odd are in Malaysia to cover the ships as they do their deed thats about as safe as I can possibly make them.

BB Revenge goes home to Trimcomalee as I fear the bettys around Rangoon. Her escorts go to Andaman to join in the evacuation.

Elsewhere... I had three subs marking Truk but it was awful quiet, so I sent one into the port on a bit of "sub recon". Lo and behold, the sub skipper claims he saw a CV there. Can't say I'm too surprised. Means I'll be treading vewy vewy quietly in the Solomons though. Lunga, Lae and Tassafaronga are Jap, but I see no activity. I had 12 subs carrying mines from Pearl headed for Truk but on second thoughts - they'll just get promptly mineswept. But Lae and others... hee. He has no minesweeping capability there. And he'll want to go there eventually, I'm sure... And maybe he'll forget a minesweeper now it looks like it's his, all safe and secure...

Pearl's sub problem seems to have gone. One more depth charged today, and when it came to my turn, a sea of green, not a red blip in sight. The light forces at Pearl are reassigned from ASW to fast transport duty and start distributing CDs, AAs and supplies around the Central Pacific. Midway and Palmyra are now both nicely mined but I fear for the more southerly islands, the Japs are getting awful close...

Very quiet day on the whole, with one high point :-

USS Tambor has a go at Soryu's TF just south of Truk but no dice. Damn! The Tambor class are the best subs I got atm too.

Still, lets me know his carriers are on a sortie to the south. My carriers are staying in Auckland while, presumably, Rabaul gets flattened. My probe to Lunga is paused. Nothing I can do at this stage to stop him in the South Pacific.

Moulmein is surrounded, he brought up another inf unit along that SE road there. Bad news for me. I think Burma may fall fairly quickly as the place is just so bare. He seems very slack with his Bettys, he doesnt make much of an effort to close down the sealanes it seems, so I plan on some fast transporting to cut supply routes with this mobility he seems to not be all that worried about me having.

Speaking of which Operation Escapade continues pulling out Malaysian units so far without loss.
