RE: Back in Business!
SCenario #2 is up and running at the Wargamer Scenario Depot. It is "Sacrificial Lambs," the second in the continuing chronological series on the fighting in the long hard summer of 1950. Let me know how it goes with this one.

RE: Back in Business!
A quick note. There is a tiny flaw in the first version of Scenario 400, Buying Time with Blood. I've corrected it. The tanks now will exit. A last minute change left US flags visible on the hills. This confuses the tanks. They won't appear now. You can download it at this address or download it again from the Wargamer Games Depot. It has been corrected there too. My apologies.
It will play fine in the first one, but much better in this revision.

Okay....two scenarios now posted and no feedback. That can be good or bad. What I would love to have is your input on the scenarios, if you have tackled them. I wanted to do this to honor those fought in this 55th anniversary. I don't want to put a lot of work into something that is of little interest to you guys.
So, I'll look forward to hearing from you if you can. If the interest is minimal, I may discontinue this.
Don't worry, my feelings won't be hurt. I am still having fun!

Sir, Colonel Wilder, Sir! Feedback, Sir!
I just downloaded your update to the scenario "Buying Time with Blood" and played it. The biggest problem with it before was, as you yourself noted, the fact that the NK tanks did not properly exit the map.
That problem appears to have been solved now, although the T-34's bunch up something fierce on the exit hex. I don't know if there's a limit to how many units can exit through a given hex per turn.
I did observe one other issue, though. Once the NK infantry arrived, giving my troops something to shoot at, one of the on-map 105mm howitzers took a shot at one of the NK infantry squads. This was nowhere near any of the tanks, but nevertheless one of them opened fire on the howitzer in the NK turn, followed by all the other T-34's letting fly with everything they had. Needless to say, this wasn't positive for the poor dog-faces of TF Smith.
Oh, and I'd like a platoon or two of M16 MGMC's. Then the NK's can human wave attack all they want! [:D]

Another thing. I'd like to see some battles from the Pusan Perimeter. If you continue to follow the 24th Infantry Division, then an obvious candidate could be the First Battle of the Naktong Bulge, which would feature both US Army and Marine troops.

RE: Back in Business!
Thank you Terminus. That is what I needed. Strange, I never saw that happen with the 105s. As to the amount exiting. Any number can exit on one turn. Sometimes five or six of them jump off the map at the same time.
The only thing I can figure on the 105 was that it was seen by the tank. I can't explain it otherwise. I think I remember using it but the tanks never noticed. Strange.
You'll get some M-16s later on, my friend, and you will need them in the Death of the 3/8 coming in the second series, the tragedy of the near annihilation of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment by early Chinese intervention (which MacArthur chose to blissfully ignore. Nobody, not even "Chinese laundrymen" were going to mess up his glory.
Two scenarios coming on Pusan defense perimeter. They will be the next two in order. So much more I could have done there, but I don't want to wear you guys out! (G)

RE: Back in Business!
I just finished "Buying Time with Blood"; despite a 3-to-1 kill ratio in my favour, I couldn't manage more than a draw. Oh well, it's better than what those poor bastards in TF Smith got [:)]
Moving on to "Sacrificial Lambs", I noticed in the briefing a mention of an NKPA 4th Division; now, it could be my memory being faulty (very likely), but I seem to remember reading somewhere that Koreans never use the number "4", it having the same connotation in their culture as "13" does in the West.
Other than that, I'm diving into the battle. I can almost smell it; read a quote in a book somewhere from a US veteran who said that his most abiding memory of Korea was the smell caused by the Koreans fertilizing their rice paddies with human feces. Lovely! [X(]

RE: Back in Business!
No feedback,eh??..O.K. Col,here's the scoop.....Before you "revised" the 1st scenerio you had given us great advice in your briefing,(to lay low and let the tanks pass)..I had passed the word on to my troops and told them not to fire at those tanks whatsoever and had set their range for "1"..I actually dispersed some of the infantry to better ground soon after the first enemy arty prep fire barrage..
My units reported the sound of oncoming tanks,(just as predicted),and the earth started shaking from their weight near that roadway.
My guys were all obeying orders and not firing, but when the enemy got to the rear limits of my AO,they did an about face and started coming back on my guys!!!(I thought "what the heck kinda dumb*ss exposed himself to the tanks to make this happen!!??"..)
My units started getting clobbered and now the enemy was actually SEEKING my units, still crouched in their holes!!..BAD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was long in reporting this Col,because I thought maybe I had tipped the scale when I had moved those grunts around..
Now I'm glad to se it was not necessarily anything I did,but a flaw from the "rear-echelon" guys!!!([:D]).............
BTW,those guys still hold a grudge and are given me the "chicken eye" and I've had to "liquor-em-up" since that last fiasco..Hope they'll be willing to do this all over again for me!

RE: Back in Business!
I've started on "Sacrificial Lambs" now. I was surprised at the relative ineffectiveness of the WP 60mm mortar rounds. I mean, they exploded very comprehensively, but achieved no more than a Pin on the NK unit they hit.
Is it because they're just teeny little 60mm rounds, and not big ol' 155mm's?

RE: Back in Business!
I appreciate very much the input, Terminus and Bob. Good job.
If I remember correctly, you need better than a three to one margin to get a minor victory. I think head to head its three to one.
Actually, as you say, a draw is not bad considering what you faced and compared to what happened to the real Task Force Smith that fateful day in July.
Your reports are quite "descriptive" and give me a good picture of what was happening on the battlefield and your reactions to it, much as the historical leaders felt, I'm sure.
Of course, we must all keep in mind the mental condition of those GIs who went into battle with "victory fever" or total ignorance of what real war is. Their brutal awakening was often at the cost of their own life. A determined, well-trained, well-equipped North Korean army was sweeping allied troops before it and the Allies were on the run.
That can definitely ruin your day.
BUT, be of good cheer. In the next scenario as the lines of the Pusan Perimeter are drawn in blood, you will get the opportunity to counterattack and catch the enemy by surprise, with your "Wolfhounds." Now its time for some payback. You should kick some butt in this one and you know I wouldn't lie to you [:-]

Battle #3, "The Wolfhounds," is posted. It is now August and the Pusan Perimeter lines are drawn. This is a meeting engagement with some armored firepower for you. Now you get to take it to the NKPA for a change!
It is a tough head on clash on the western side of the perimeter. Good hunting!

Feedback:
Your two hour battles always take me days [:D]
I have to have everything set to slow or I can't tell what's going on.
Turn 11. I disabled two tanks early. They shoot back. Retreating enemy retreats toward me.
Precious ammo wasted on trucks. (unless they give big points)
Thanks WB, I'll get to the others too. [&o]

RE: Back in Business!
Getting into the second half of "Sacrificial Lambs". God, what a mess.
The center of town is a blazing heap of rubble. Four NK T-34's stand burning and abandoned in the streets, surrounded by the bodies of scores of Communist and US soldiers. The mortars ran out of ammunition long ago, and the F-80's have expended their rockets as well. It seems for every NK soldier that falls, two take his place, whilst every fallen US soldier leaves another hole in the line that can't be plugged.
For a few fleeting moments after the destruction of the last enemy tank, the Americans thought they might make it. Then the sound of bugles heralded another NK charge followed by hundreds of brown-uniformed figures storming forward. The center of the line is buckling...

RE: Back in Business!
The battle of Chonan is over. The NKPA hold the center and southwestern outskirts of the town, but the road south is open for the tattered remnants of the US forces to retreat down.
210 NK soldiers lie dead in the ruined town, alongside the burnt-out hulks of six T-34 tanks. Four of the metal monsters were destroyed in close combat by American infantrymen, while another two fell victim to FEAF F-80 jets.
But what losses the Americans took: 216 GI's were left behind in the rubble, and the 3/34th Infantry has ceased to exist as a coherent fighting force. All that is left now is the long retreat, with the demoralised US units barely held together by the few veteran NCO's that survived the massacre that was the fight for Chonan.

That is the nice thing about gaming, you have time to think your tactics through and react accordingly. Take your time. Enjoy it, Junk2. A meal eaten slowly is often better enjoyed than one that a person wolfs down quickly.
There are there at your disposal. Thanks for the update.

RE: Back in Business!
The top one is the historical area where the GIs were hit the hardest. It was where the TF Smith first broke. Even without the tanks it is hard to hold. Only enfilading machine gun fire from the lower hill as the NKPA flanks the position can give you enough firepower to keep them from swarming the guys in the western end of the perimeter.
Don't feel badly. THis is a tough one to win.

This is exactly what happened to me, with the one exception that I DID let all the tanks pass. Except for the last one on the map which got hit by a VERY lucky bazooka shot.
Simply too many NK's and not enough GI's. First draw I've ever been satisfied with [:)]

Feedback on "The Wolfhounds":
I've gotten to Turn 6, and am in a mother of a firefight with the NK's in the center of the map. It's bogged down for the moment.
I have three minor technical issues to report:
1): I'm seeing less accuracy in US rifle and MG fire than I'd expected. Is this on purpose, to reflect the years of goofing off in Japan, or am I just imagining things?
2): The NK 81mm mortar teams seem to be shooting 152mm shells. I thought the explosions looked awfully big, until one of my trucks ate a shell and it was identified on screen.
3): A very minor thing, but the battle is set to take place in August of 1949 (8/2/49 in the calendar).
Otherwise, it's a good fight. One of my Shermans has bounced EIGHT 85mm shells so far. Granted, they were fired at extreme range, but still... EIGHT![X(]
