How about having a chance for you, as the commander of your allied or Japanese forces, are killed by some random incident. GAME OVER.[:D]
Or a "random" shooting down of your plane by the enemy, Yamamoto-style?

The most dreadful event in SPI's version of WITP was drawing a casualty ship from a cup.
Anyone remember that particular event in that game? What was that? Once a year?[:D]
Wasn't SPI's title called USN? The one with the paper map and all those counters? Boy, that takes me back to the late seventies.
Its the SPI title that was my first wargame experience and the main reason for buying WiTP, that and the GG name!

The bottom line is managing combat operations is essentially risk management, and most players are riskier than thier real life counterparts and are prone to whine, snivel and complain when bad things happen despite the fact they have taken signifiacnt risk and cannot accept the consequences.
I for one like the idea of random losses, as my "campaign management" should be able compensate for variation and still succeed.

SPI published USN, which was a very abstract depiction of the Pacific war 1941-43. Their monster game, named "War in the Pacific," did, indeed, provide for drawing of a ship counter from a cup for imposition of accidental damage. Victory's later strategic title, named "Pacific War: the Struggle Against Japan" (anybody notice some familiar verbiage in these titles?), was very different from SPI's WitP. A group called "Fresno Gamers' Association (FGA)" cribbed heavily from SPI's title in the late '80s with a monster game called "The Eagle and the Sun," which had such undeveloped rules that it was completely unplayable (unless you did like some of us idiots and developed the rules yourself).
Just recently, Decision Games has reworked the old SPI USN title and published it as "Advanced USN," covering the entire war. It may be one of the most fun cardboard-and-paper games I've ever played. The guys in the club I belong to have bought four copies, and at least two are always spread out on the tables. It is a simple, yet historically faithful, simulation, and you don't have to worry about where your leaders went.

Hi, Aboard Mutsu when she exploded was a tour of IJN Pilot instructors. All of them were lost. Lets add stuff like that We could have random leaders lost to heart attacks, auto wrecks, plane crashes and such. Have aircraft bomb and strafe friendly LCU and ships.
Or lets not.

We could even have a similar feature here on the forums - call it RML (random moderator loss).ORIGINAL: Mogami
