Detailed combat

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

RE: Skirmishers

Marcel,
Thanks for the answer. Speaking only for myself, the manual is not very helpful in this particular. I’ve read it.

Seems we are talking about two different things here:
1)The difference between skirmishing and not skirmishing.
2)The difference between Lights and Regulars.

Skirmishing, in general, allows any type of infantry to withstand more casualties than they would otherwise without loosing morale and disordering/routing. It also makes them better at fighting in rough terrain. Eric doesn’t mention it, but I think they take fewer casualties from fire too (this is just my impression, I can be fooling myself). Lights/jaggers are better at skirmishing than regulars, as they get less movement and formation penalties and more attack firepower. BTW, Eric said Lights skirmishing have 20% more firepower when attacking. But, 20% more than regulars skirmishing, or 20% more than Lights not skirmishing?

So, if I wanted to hold a position longer, especially a forest or a village, or simply fight in rough terrain, I would ideally use Lights in skirmisher mode. Regular skirmishers would do too, but Lights would be better.

Now, the difference between Regulars and Lights when not skirmishing is less documented. In quick combat Lights have better defense and Regulars better attack, but you can’t deploy skirmishers in quick combat, so there is no way of knowing if the difference is because Lights are always skirmishing, or because Lights defend better and Regulars attack better no matter what. In detailed combat, when not skirmishing, have Lights less attacking power –fire and charge- and better defense than Regulars? Any difference between a line of Lights and a line of Regulars?

On another topic. I reinforced one of my Imperial Guards with guys from the other unit and it got downgraded to regular infantry. It's morale went from 8 to 6. The other unit kept its guard status and high morale. I can't send the guys back to the original unit because now the first guard division is in fact a regular infantry unit.
