Almost no action....

Post by Bombur »

Makes me wonder if Nik wants to beat me on operational losses points (btw, Japan lost 2 planes to flak and more 3 operational. Nik lost a Hurricane and a Lysander destroyed in the ground, it seems he concluded it´s better to keep Hurricanes in their hangars than to deploy them against Zeros....)

Disaster in the skies

Post by Bombur »

-A completely unexpected setback happened to the Japanese naval aviation yesterday. As our search planes localized a big enemy fleet approaching Gilli Gilli, including at least one Yorktown class CV, plans were drawn to engage the enemy ships with long range twin engine bombers escorted by Zeros. As the enemy finally reached Gilli gilli, at least 50 Zeros and 70 Nells and Betties were launched. What followed was a bloody air battle in which the Japanese took heavy losses. The Zeros, flying at low altitude and spped to protect the bombers, were easy preys for the enemy F4F´s, which outnumbered the Japanese fighters from 2:1 to 4:1. Furthermore, the long range attacks were uncoordinated and some waves of bombers reached the targets with few escorts or no escorts at all. In the end, no less than 21 Zeros and 25 bombers were lost. No enemy ship was hit.

Few action this turn. Enemy LB-30´s bombed Mandalay, destroying 8 planes in the ground. Our Oscar pilots attempted to invite them to vacations in our resorts but the enemy crews kindly declined[:D]. Hopefully, they will change their minds latter...

RE: Gilli Gilli falls....

Post by Nikademus »

Well i wouldn't go so far as to say that Japan has lost the initiative. She has meerly suffered a setback..a minor base taken with a weak SNLF force repulsed by strong Allied forces. Rabaul suffered a reverse similar to what happened historically but the losses can be replaced. Japan still has a quantitive and qualitive edge in carriers. Taking PM will be more of a challenge now though.......to quote Naturo...."Believe it!"

-Well, it seems our propaganda machines exchanged places[:D]. That´s because I´m a Betty (and Nell) fanboy, and losing my twin engine bombers makes me somewhat depressed.....[:(]
-Well, reports for the turn. Few combat. IJN ASW is hunting enemy subs and placed a few depth charges in Greeling, uncertain about the extent of damage caused by there was at least one penetrating hit and several near misses. An attempt to bombard Gilli Gilli in order to get some revenge from its loss gave mixed results, as enemy B-26´s attacked or battleships. The fast bombardment TF cancelled its mission while the slower battleships were able to cause some destruction. Nagato and Kongo hits by 500lbs bombs that caused almost no damage. One B-26 was lost. Meanwhile, the AVG again appeared over Hanoi, escorting Il-4´s. This time there was a A6M2 Datai and a Ki-43 Chutai to defend the city. Seven P-40´s, five A6M2 and 4 Oscars lost. No Il-4 was shot down.
