We don't know. We don't know how many were built! Three different yards report building the SAME boats - the uncertainty is 20 vessels!
Shizuo Fukui - a commander and prisoner - wrote Japanese Naval Vessels at the End of World War II - and he lists 71 (completed and lots uncompleted) - not counting midgets. This is certainly incomplete - it cannot include the ship that went to Panama or to Germany, for example - and it does not include either of Japans two SSNs - one of which was commissioned and one of which was completed but unfueled and uncomissioned. My best guess - about 75.
