Feinder, you should require that the guessers tell you how they know. That way we know that they aren't just pulling the picture off the web.

Please to elaborate...

After she got pounded at Guadalcanal she was rebuilt. The 5" were relocated from atop the deckhouse and spread along the broadside. The forward 5" was just below and forward of the forward broadside quad 40mm

LOL. Oh sure, make me eat my words!

I can't see a lot to go off of in the picture. Those do indeed appear to be USN personnel. The gun configuration definitely suggests a CA, that is, 3 8" guns forward, possibly a single 5" gun, or possibly a dual 5" gun below and a 4x40mm AA nest in the foreground.

There does appear to be a CA in the distance and they do seem to be on a shore bombardment mission, or could be drills, none of which really helps.

Witchita would meet the criteria above. So would CA-29 is that is in fact a 2x5" gun below. Otherwise, its a guess.

Congrats Niceguy, it is indeed the USS Witchita!

Y'all don't have to explain all your guesses tho. I was poking at Niceguy (esp since he manged to guess it correctly).

Two pics in a day is enough for now tho. I need to update the banner anyway.
