Probably it is true for P-39 and Hurricane too. All I want to say is that exp should be at least 70% of the combat score, whiloe max 30 should be allocated to plane qualities.
IF you restrict the discussion to the rare (10%) case of BOTH SIDES KNOW they are in air combat
this is utter nonsense - and that is the good news. In the normal (90%) case - the guy with surprise wins - period.
Yes, but please tell me who was smart enough to go for surprise -out of the sun-, hm? Sure Mr. John J Greenhorn, out of the Flight school, or Claire Chennault? Which one was smart enough to rely on its planes skills and control his instincts? There are many documentated csases where a skilled pilot
a. either won in an out dated plane against a more 'modern' opponent
b. or managed to get away against overwhelming odds
Erich Hartmann once evaded 10 Mustnags over Rumania. Has not shot down any of them, but got home unscathed.
The pilot quality (assuming above the level of "we can actually maintain formation and land the machine) matters a great deal - but not as much as the plane qualities. Nothing is going to save Eddie Rickenbacker (a medal of honor winner in both world wars) if he goes against a real fighter in a Glen.
We were talking about fighter combat. No Betty can get away from a Hellcat no matter who flies it. This is no Star Wars where Han Solo evades TIE fighters with a Lambda class shuttle. Of course a WWII monoplane would shoot down a doubledecker anytime. And pilot quality does NOT equal I can take off fly a few minutes and land in safety. It is say exp 45 in WitP. IF plane quality were ONLY important no US planes would have been shot down after say 7/43.
