German turn 12:

Post by larryfulkerson »

Next turn the Germans are going to get the 2nd Panzer Div and 17th SS Div.

Image

So maybe a discussion as to where to employ them might be in order here.  If the bridge near Carentan could be repaired:

Image

then the 77th Inf Div could be rushed across it and threaten the Utah beaches ( and the supply therefrom ) and could cause the destruction of the entire Allied 4th Div eventually.  And either the 2nd Panzer or the 17th SS could replace the positions the 77th Inf Div is occupying now.  The division that isn't replacing the 77th Inf Div could be used to overwhelm the 82nd Abn Div.  That would cause the Allied effort to push north to collapse entirely.  Worth a try.

Allied turn 13:

Post by larryfulkerson »

Here we see the 2nd Armd Div stretching it's full length trying to plug the holes in the line.  This is an invitation to disaster since the Div doesn't have any reserves and if it falls back at all it'll uncover the line for outflanking by the Germans.  Fortunately the British 11th Armoured is going to arrive on screen soon to help take up the load:

The 2nd Inf Div is pulling out of the line for a much needed rest, on Utah beach.  After which it will assist the 4th Inf Div in the push north:

Patrols from the 82nd Abn Div have spotted the arrival via rail of a whole-nother German division and have alerted higher higher to the danger of being overwhelmed:

Higher higher decides to replace the 82nd with the 2nd Inf Div, as soon as possible if not sooner.

German turn 13:

The commander of the 711th Div is alarmed and dismayed to discover that elements of the British 6th Abn Div are landing to his rear.  His suspects that more are scheduled for the evening ( this is an am turn ):

Disaster!  The 2nd Inf Div is in reorg and can't move to the Utah beach.  The most the Allies can muster for defense of the beach is two tired tank batallions:

The Allied ground commander was shocked, alarmed, and dismayed to discover that the Allied 6th Abn Div is getting no supply, not even airdropped supply.  It's more important than ever to burst through the German lines to rescue that Div before they are decimated:

Part of the German game plan is to trap the British 3rd Div and the 6th Abn Div in a pocket with no supply by capturing the bridge near drop zone Y:

Allied turn 15:

Post by larryfulkerson »

The Allied player concedes defeat to the Germans.  The reasons are at least three:  (1) the 1st Inf Division is in no condition to confront the SS division across the river from them.  The HQ unit is the only one in "green" condition.

Image

(2) It's a matter of time until the British 3rd Div and the 6th Abn Div are crushed and killed.  (3) the 4th Inf Div, 82nd Abn and 101st Abn are just about to get surrounded, starved, and killed.

Anybody who wants to continue this game, all you have to do is download the attachment below, rename the file, just clip off the ".txt" from the end [ this forum doesn't support ".zip" files so I renamed it "somename.zip.txt" ] unzip it and there you have a *.sal file.

How long has it taken you to get this far into the game?

I imagine you are getting very little sleep and eating as your playing? [:D]

I've been at this day and night for about three days straight now. I'm retired and have nothing else to do so.....

I wondered about that Larry, as you always have so many AARs that are so full of detail, with pictures, movies, and text.

Kudos on another good one.
To repeat history in a game is to be predictable.

Eh...

IIRC the German units get raked, heavily by Allied air interdiction.  On the daylight turns the Germans can hardly move a step without hitting an interdiction.  How did the German player overcome this?  I look and all I see are good condition German units, how is this even possible?  Is this a modded game you're playing?

In my experiences as the Germans playing this map (I've never seriously tried the Allies' side), I was entirely unable to launch any meaningful offensive moves like crushing the 6th Airborne or attacking across the bridge north of Carentan.  Only when I get the 2nd SS does anything become possible offense wise.  The arrival of the 9, 10 SS + Lehr allow for a actual significant push to the beaches, albeit a terribly costly one.

I just don't see why you conceded the battle.  HitlerJugend could have been stopped.  Even if the 6th Airborne is destroyed, you can still hold Pegasus Bridge.  And since the 12th SS is out of town in Caen, you can all out offensive west of the city to attempt to roll up the German defensive line at Caen from the west.

So um........I decided to move the German stuff mostly at night ( the PM turns ). And no, it's not modded to play any different.

So that I could start the Fire in the East AAR mostly. How about I do another Overlord '44 AAR with the PO as German player? As I recall the German PO likes to move his stuff in the daytime as well as at night...that way I could decimate them proper.
