Has anyone every run a simple simulation on WitP between these two mighty ships meeting on the high seas (no escorts)??
I know there are a lot of variables that go into surface combat, but as a former player of minatures, I would like to see how certain classes of ships would do against each other.

As a Boise fanboy, I think it would win against most, if not all, of the Japanese CL's. [:D][:D]

No, the Allies would fight fair. They'd show up with NEW JERSEY, MISSOURI, IOWA, and WISCONSIN...., and claim they thougt the challange was between BB "classes".

Okay, for what it's worth. I gamed this out in Action Stations several years ago (well, more like ten). Basically the Battle of San Bernardino Strait with Halsey using his brain for somethings besides keeping his ears separated - and turning Ching Lee loose. It was (disregarding air attacks) Yamato, Musashi, Nagato (modified to her correct 26.75kt speed, Kongo and Haruna vs. Iowa, New Jersey, Washington, South Dakota, Massachusetts & Alabama in Zimm's game, with ancillary ships (which I modded out.)

As I recall after looking through the save file, Yamato and Musashi did not die in the action, but were not in shape to do anything more then crawl away. Nagato was pummeled and dead in the water. Kongo died. Haruna escaped at a higher speed than anything I had left which could see her. Iowa was hit hard, but retiring at 15 kts. New Jersey was capable of 20 kts, but was down one turret (Nr. 2), Washington got her pants scared off when she came out from behind a smoke screen caused by fires and found herself mano a mano with Musashi at 3K yards. She had a steering casualty and could only steam in circles for a while all the time shooting and being shot at. She suffered some heavy hits but survived. SoDak, Bama and Big Mamie were mainly running round chasing the line shootint at whoever they could see, (Which was a real problem in Zimm's game, smoke and fires wreaked havoc). But that fire was enough to take care of Kongo, ding up Nagato enough to put her our of the IJN line, and run Haruna off.

Not to sure how that would have worked out in real life, but the RN Captain seemed to think rather highly of the USN fire control superiority over the IJN vessels.

I don't understand the smoke and fire thing when you have radar controlled guns.

Is there a tatical computer game out there where we can try this?

I could set it up in SeeKrieg (miniatures rules) but it would take all day to fight it. If I used just Yamato and New Jersey, it would be a couple of hours.
For what we are about to receive, may we be truly thankful.

Assuming that it is an even fight, and Yamato doesn't score a lucky hit which either: cripples NJ, or takes out her fire control system, I would have to say NJ would get the better of Yamato pretty quickly (thanks to said fire control system). Of course, its war, anything and everything happens, but I do think this would be the most likely scenario.

@Rev

Sounds interesting, except that the US battle line should have been able to steam circles around the IJN.

Also, at 3k yards Musashi's fire control would go into coniptions.

There would be no contest.

The Jersey used radar fire control. Yamato did not.
The Jersey could shoot over the horizon. Yamato not.

The Jersey sits back and pounds Yamato to pieces while she tries to close.

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: Sardonic

There would be no contest.

The Jersey used radar fire control. Yamato did not.
The Jersey could shoot over the horizon. Yamato not.

The Jersey sits back and pounds Yamato to pieces while she tries to close.

The salvo from main guns travel certain amout of time (and that time is not that small in long ranges).

Thus the above statements would be true only if Yamato would move with constant speed on constant course... [8D]

But, then again, with erratic speed/movement the Yamato would not be able to create any firing solution of her own (and would not be able to fire at New Yersey at all)... [;)]

Given that the last occasion on which this was tested was Jutland (and not Bismark [;)], despite the 3rd salvo bullseye), we could only guess. My guess is that NJ would have a much easier time at least bracketing the Yamato than vice versa.

Would not commanders make quite a difference in this fight? Who would command each ship?

New Jersey was years more advanced design. More fair comparison would be Yamato vs. South Dakota class.
