Personally I'd use Hawaii as a launching ground for an invasion of Johnston Island with a view to securing the northern flank of a drive to Fiji and Caledonia in order to re-establish SLOCs with Australia.

This would also have the benefit of allowing the British Navy and ground forces to link up with Australian and American units with a view to driving northward either into the DEI (west of New Guinea ) or along the eastern coast of New Guinea through Truk, Saipan etc.

This is probably what I would do also. I've been watching John's game, where his opponent made a deep invasion to Iwo Jima, so I am keeping some forces at some of those 'safe' bases just in case. There is sort of a domino effect, I can't see OSO going for Midway when I have Johnston and the Aleutians. Too much space for my carriers to hide. Can't attack Iwo/Marcus/Saipan without taking Midway.

But if he goes south, along the US - Australia SLOC line - then he eliminates the threat of me hiding in his southern flank and only has to worry about the north.

And there is still the Aleutian route, but I'm doing my best to build up some defense there and keep an eye on his islands to spot any ship concentrations.

@Alikchi - if NZ goes its going to be extremely difficult to get US ground forces into Burma

Isn't there someway the Allies can move things from San Francisco to Karachi or Aden) by withdrawing them or something?

Is there? [&:] Would be great to know if there is

Maybe not - I thought I read something about it a long time back. Maybe it was a bug or something. I thought it was a way to withdraw things and they would show up on the otherside of the world to simulate the trip around Africa/through MidEast. I'm not an Allied player though, so I couldn't say for sure.

Whats his use of subs like. I've found that submarines, despite the dud rate, are the best way to hit the Japs in first year of war.

So far, his subs mostly were laying mines, however he has had a couple hits here and there. But, interesting that you mention this, because in the last few day I have seen subs crawling into the empire from all directions. My hunch is the minelaying/evacuation missions for his subs are done now, and he may well be working up an organized sub offensive.

To counter, I have been upgrading like I have OCD - so all my ASW ratings are as high as they can possibly be (which I realize is still lacking). I have been sending at least an escort or two with all convoys, and the bigger ones get a couple more.

Another Chinese corp is destroyed in the pocket near Honan.

Zeros sweep Darwin and down a P-40E and a Wirraway.

Our carriers still did not attack enemy ships at Wellington. The carrier won't be moving tomorrow, so perhaps they will launch then.

Kai Island, Tinian and Adak Island all expand their airfields. (sz 2, 4 and 4)

In the nighttime, I-170 near Umnak Island was sunk by escorts of a US Carrier group. During the next day our Jakes based at Adak attacked the carrier group unescorted and as can be expected were all shot down. 11 Jakes total were destroyed. Indications are that the fighters were flying from Enterprise.

In China, the last Chinese Corp near Honan was destroyed. The division there will head to the southwest of Honan next to assist with eliminating a pocket there.

At Wellington, our carriers finally launched and found four minesweepers. MSW Inchkeith survived the aerial attacks, but Sandra, Scarba and Killegray all were sunk. Thankfully, the I-2 was on station and alert, and even though our aviators missed the Inchkeith, the I-2 did not. The sub put two torpedoes into that last MSW, sinking it. Our carriers will head back out to sea to avoid attacks from LBA.

Air attacks resumed against Changsha today. Approximately one hundred Sally, Lily I and Lily II bombers hit airstrips and supply dumps in the area.
Image
Air attacks begin again

After a sweep of Darwin by Zeros, Liz and Nell bombers again hit the port. The PG Tulsa is sunk, and the AVD Heron and AK Palawan both take bombs hit.

Gisborne expands its airfield to 3. A Helen unit will be flown in to start operations against Hamilton. Three tank units are now in Hamilton, but will not attack until the 71st Division has cut the retreat routes to Auckland.

Mandalay airfield expanded (sz 4) and the engineers there will now work on defenses. Sansapor and Sawahloento both opened new airfields today. (Sz 1's)

AK Hokorei Maru hit a mine entering Rangoon harbor. The ships was part of a group of transports carrying a Base Force for Burma. The ship is damaged but will be okay.

Nells at Timor attacked ships at Darwin again. The PG Luzon and PC Genesee were both hit, the PC later sunk.

In China, Kungchang was abandoned to the IJA.

Op Sakura:
Today the first air attack was launched on Auckland. Helens escorted by Zeros hit the airfields there, destroying 2 Kittyhawks and 1 Hudson on the ground. At Hamilton, three tank regiments attacked the 1st NZ Cavalry Bge and although they inflicted heavy casualties were not able to force the unit to retreat. Infantry support is a day or two behind. The 71st Division is heading to the north to prevent retreat to Auckland. In the south, the 18th Division and 3rd Engineer unit have taken up position around Wellington. The rest of the 14th Army should arrive tomorrow and then we will attack the next day. At the same time, the 25th Army is now sailing to Picton and Wellington should be in our hands before the convoy passes by the coast.

Nice, very nice. Railroads + shore bases = Japanese blitzkrieg. [:)]

BTW, yes, I was referring to that feature that allows you to send American stuff from the West Coast to Karachi/Aden, though I don't remember exactly how you do it. I'd send all the resources that MacArthur got in reality to CBI.

Indeed - those railroad are very helpful in NZ. Hopefully South Island will go down easy once the 25th Army gets ashore.

We attacked the CV group near Umnak today and this time Zero's escorted Vals on the attack. Although the enemy fighters performed well (4 lost compared to 7 Zeros lost) we still managed to get 5 Vals through their defenses. Unfortunately they all missed their target, the CV Yorktown. 5 Vals were lost, 2 from enemy fighters and 3 from AA guns. Tomorrow, Nells will fly from Adak to try attack the CVs again, hopefully the enemy fighters will be slightly less capable of stopping 20+ escorted bombers.

Off the coast of India, the I-165 put a torpedo into the PG Jumna, but no sinking was confirmed.

At Darwin, the PG Luzon, hit yesterday, was reported sunk.

The I-9, hit by patrol planes from Pearl Harbor several days ago, sunk off the coast of Wotje, just two more days out from the facilities at Kwaj.

At New Zealand, most of the 16th Army will attack Wellington tomorrow. Helens and Zeros hit Auckland, destroying another Kittyhawk on the ground.

A lively day!

At Darwin, Zero's swept the P-40Es and then Liz and Nell bomber hit the port. This time they connected with some ships, sinking the AVD Heron, and a PT boat. The AK Palawan took a few bombs as well.

In the North Pacific, a small raiding TF with CL Nagara was spotted and attacked by B-25C Mitchell bombers northwest of Umnak. I'll pull the cruiser back and coordinate with the Zeros to provide some cover and try again in a couple days. Meanwhile, the Nells that flew into Adak hit enemy transports at Dutch Harbor, escorted by Zeros. They put one torpedo into each of 4 Allied AKs. The Zeros took down 3 P-39Ds on the way in. Our Alfs attack as well, but scored no hits. The American Carriers seem to have retreated after their close call. Our bombers are tired, but we will keep the attack up, we have to use every chance we get to sink Allied transports.
Image
Enemy transports hit

Op Sakura: Wellington is captured!! 11,400 POW's are taken and now the 14th Army will change gears and head north to support the 16th Army if it has any trouble taking Auckland. The 25th Army is in position near Wellington, and will move in to unload during the day tomorrow at Picton, support by bombardments from all our battleships and heavy cruisers present. Zeros and Helens will fly into Wellington and support the landing at Picton as well. Jakes from our light carrier group hit an MSW at Christchurch with six 100kg AP bombs. The ship will likely sink soon.

Yamashiro, Fuso, Hyuga, Isa, 7 Heavy Cruisers and 3 Light cruisers all pound Picton in advance of a daylight landing by the 25th Army. It seems to work as casaulies are light for the 25th Army. Enemy defenses are light, 1 NZ Bge and a Base Force. The base should fall tomorrow and then the 25th will begin its march down the South Island.
Image
Landing at Picton

In the North Pacific, Zeros and Nells attack again, losing 3 Zeros today, but taking out 5 P-39Ds and putting two torpedoes into the AP Mormachawk. Alfs attack also, but again miss.

The PG Jumna, hit two days ago by the I-165 near India, was reported sunk today.

Today, the Allied ships in the North Pacific moved to Unmak (the base attacked over the last couple days was Dutch Harbor, not Umnak, sorry about that). In response our planes flew one well coordinated strike, but only scored one torpedo hit on a cargo ship. Tomorrow, the bombers will stand down to rest, while Nagara moved under the CAP of the Zeros at Adak. If enemy ships are still at Umnak the following day, we will try another nighttime raid with the cruiser.
Image

The 25th army continued to unload at Picton. The NZ troops abandoned the base and our troops captured it.

An assault on Changsha made little progress, but we will continue to wear down the enemy.

Thanks VSWG. That is a pretty bold compliment, I don't think I quite qualify to be on the same level as Adm Laurent, but I can hold my own at least. Besides, the real challenge will be when the Allies get stronger.

Thanks for the link also - that was what I was remembering. Its also a good reason for some of my NZ divisions to head to Burma once this operation is concluded.

May 30th, 1942 - Hamilton Captured

Post by FeurerKrieg »

May 30th, 1942
Op Sakura:
Hamilton was captured easily today and the 1 NZ Cav Bde, after suffering 30% casualties, retreated towards Auckland. Farther south, the 2nd NZ Cav Bde was hit by the majority of the 14th Army en route to Hamilton/Auckland. The unit surrendered quickly and 2700 POWs were taken.
Image
Hamilton Captured

North Pacific:
Nagara was attacked at Adak by 9 B-25Cs. Zeros on station shot down one, and thankfully the others missed. Weather is forecast to be bad tomorrow, so our ships will press on and raid Umnak tonight. Hopefully their torpedoes will run straight and true. Also in this theater, Onnekotan Jima airfield was expanded. (sz 2)

In the Indian Ocean, a Glen sub spotted four transports heading towards Australia. There is not much we can do about it at the moment, so they will continue unmolested by the IJN.

Recon at Colombo indicated only a couple Wirraways on patrol duty, but large ships in port, maybe heavy cruisers. Betty's at the newly complete airfield at Sabang will fly a port raid tomorrow at extreme range to attempt to hit these ships in port with 800kg AP bombs.

May 31th, 1942 - NoPac Night Action!

Post by FeurerKrieg »

May 31st, 1942

Northern Pacific:
The dark, cold waters around Umnak were lit, and the silence broken, by the gunfire of warships. Knife fighting destroyers traded blows, but the IJN came out on top. Three enemy destroyers met the light cruiser Nagara and four IJN destroyers in a series of running battles. The enemy destroyers had only 4" guns, which could not penetrate Nagara's armor. The IJN boats had 5.5", 5" and 4.7" guns, and they landed several hits. DD Morris and Crosby both were hit by a torpedo and several 5.5" hits and both sunk. The DD Litchfield took 9 solid hits, but evaded the torpedoes. The ship was reported to be on fire and heavily damaged upon disengagement. Of the IJN group, only DD Ikazuchi suffered major damage, taking 3 hits and one torpedo.
Image
Nighttime battle at Umnak

As day broke, the task force had to return to Adak for fighter cover and Ikazuchi was left behind. Enemy B-25c bombers soon attacked the destroyer, but amazingly no hits were scored. In the afternoon, bad weather prevent further attack on the destroyer. It is in bad shape and will probably not last another day. (68/85/19) If the ship sinks, we will have at least sunk more than we lost (2 or 3 to 1), good odds, but not good enough against the US Fleet. Air attacks will resume tomorrow as Nagara heads northwest out of range of the enemy bombers. CL Tama is forming up a group in Tokyo and will sail to take over station at Attu Island for Nagara, as she heads home for repairs to the light battle damage received.

Also in the area, I-122, waiting south of Umnak to lay mines, was attacked repeatedly by escorts of a large task force, presumably the American carriers again. The sub took 13 near misses out of probably 100 depth charges dropped. The ship is damaged and has minor flooding but may well be able to make it home for repairs. If so, the skipper will get a medal.

Elsewhere:
Betty bombers from Sabang attack Colombo, but after the long flight, our pilots suffered from fatigue and missed their targets. The falling bombs will at least keep the British on their toes, and perhaps they will divert some fighters to the base that will be missed elsewhere.

Helens in New Zealand resumed the bombing of Auckland. They will continue until the city is captured.

Some days ago the the fact that the enemy has increased sub activity was mentioned. Numerous dive and level bombers were put on ASW missions across the empire and today off the coast of Burma, a Sally and a Lily II both score a hit on the same submarine. Hopefully we will continue to land hits on these enemy submarines.
