Good evening readers,

since the return of this game, I've gone from an active, almost proactive stance (don;t you hate hearing that word in the workplace !) to one of reaction and response.

My response so far has been lukewarm at most ... foolhardy and inept at most.

Nemo has put LB on Midway and taken the fight to me at Wake, my airfield is almost closed and there is little I can do at present ... I would have a guess that this will continue in a death-star way into Kwajalein and then Truk ... but more worrying is if he decides that this is just a softening up for something else, or to deflect my interest from other areas.

I have a hunch that Midway is being reinforced, he would need to add some AS anyway and I'm going to try to recon the base better in coming days. If Midway is going to be the base too far, then at least I want to see what I'm facing before I commit ... maybe my slow action since the restart was an error. As has been the stationing of Betty's on Wake, without fighter support ... what a stupid move on my part. The fighters that are there now, destroyed 8 B-17E's today, but had 6 Zekes in flames as well.

In Burma, I have little response to the Allied onslaught, I cannot hit his high alt bombing and it is slowly gradating my airfield at Rangoon and aircraft stationed there. I have pulled some back, but there was a toothless raid on Bangkok today, so I'm not safe anywhere. In the 6 months it will take until I get a high-alt fighter, I'll be pushed back to bush airstrips.

I could try my own death-star LB attacks from Rangoon or Bangkok, but at present I have them stood down until I totally understand his deployment.

Manila, had no Allied flights today, so I got to destroy some of his forces on the ground, but I believe that he has withdrawn them, thinking I'd go heavy today, and these planes were damaged anyway...

Finally, Nikolaevsk na Amur (Nth of Okha- Sakhalin) was taken ...maps will be provided in the next post.

No Ki-45 Nick's in Nemo's mod? In CHS those come out in Sept 42, and can hit the high altitude bombers. The b variant is even better with its 37mm cannon.

IMHO the Ki-45 is indeed the best B-17 killer the Japanese have in the earlier parts of the game. But we are even earlier: only mid-May '42. (Watch out for transposed month and day in different date formats.)

Yeah unfortunately this has me with only one option ... Attack, attack, attack ... or turncoat & withdraw ...

This will start in a few days, I will concentrate all the airpower I can muster and take it out for a spin ... it is either this or sit around at various airfields watching the daisies as the planes in the stratosphere cut me to ribbons on the ground. [*] Continued my cycle of offloading at Umnak, in a few days I should have enough troops to overwhelm this base.
[*] Wuchow - Sent 9 Lily II, with protection, or so I thought for an inspection run to see where the Allied fighters went... unfortunately my escort must have missed the rally point and my Lilly's got a bit of a touch up . 8 were destroyed.
[*] Air raid into Bangkok, went well for the Allies again, 74 B-17's were untouchable and did some minor damage.
[*] Wake now is officially a no go for Japanese pilots and planes, the airfield is closed.
[*] Manila airfield was bombed heavily today, hit some planes still damaged on the tarmac, I'll keep this closed indefinately now.
[*] The Allies are moving closer to Canton and Hong Kong, I'm readying some reinforcements and supplies.
[*] My ASW has not been working as well as I would have liked, but am finding subs all over at present, I hope to get some more hits in coming days.

Also Nemo asked about sub landings ... so I guess the Philippine Is, might become another place that I have to spread myself thin. But we must use full units and not fragments.

Air deployment and concentration ...

Akyab seems to be a good target to take on first, Michael and I, I thought had an unspoken deal on airfield capacity ... Nemo, is stacking above the 115% / Lvl as far as I can see. This is not a criticism, we just didn't negotiate on it and hell, let's just get on with it...

Bad weather has me stood down for tomorrow, but then the lads will fly and fly hard, I'm intending on rotation and throwing the kitchen sink if necessary.. If the Battle of Burma goes badly then I can pull back until my Angels appear next month (6 engine monsters). I need to win this battle, and win it big enough for Nemo to have to drop his LB to a lower alt, or at least give him cause for concern.

Be careful about getting sucked too far forward in Burma Damian. It's a dangerous move that ties up and kills a lot of Japs in many conventional games. Against someone like Nemo who counterpunches with little regard for losses as long as it is forcing you to react and whittling down your forces, it could prove deadly. I would say the bold way you have played up to now against Michael would serve you well against Nemo. The 10 days you gave him are immensely dangerous and have effectively handed the initiative back to him. A player of Nemo's calibre IS capable of conjouring something out of nothing in that short a time frame, but the Allied player was already on the ropes. Your strategy put him there. Nemo will screw with your mind where he can, but try not to fight his war, when your war was going so well...

Burma does not have the support of players as a glamorous part of the game. However, it is often one of the deciding theaters of war (just ask John how he feels now with the Brits and Chinese coming down through Burma into Malaya and Sumatra now [:D]). From the Allied perspective it is the main place to use attrition to wear down the Japanese air power for most of '42. I would imagine that most of the Russian Air Force will end up here and/or in China. He can get American bombers here in just 3 days (they will need about a week to get their fatigue down afterwards). You will have to get very aggressive here for at least the next few months or Nemo will be marching south sooner than you like (late '42 vs '43).

Michael is right - Burma is an attrition battle. In this mod the Jap player is quite well equiped to fight such a battle, particularly as apart from the US, most Allied pilot replacement rates are not great. However, if you cannot do anything about his major airfields, he will eventually win. It is a battle you probably have to fight, but moving too far forward in the difficult to supply and traverse Burmese territory is asking for trouble. You have a long flank, exposed to rapid amphibious envelopment. I am a plodding player and I'd fancy it. You can bet your bum someone like Nemo is drooling...

I never intended going further than Mandalay on the ground, this was decided some time ago. GBL you are right I should play my own game, but this is a battle I need to at least try. Waiting for those Allied bombers to kill me on the ground, looking down from the safety of 33K, is the most frustrating time I've had in this game.

10 days in hindsight was a bit generous, but I think I still have a little gas left in the tank to take Nemo's attention away from Burma for a bit. At least I hope. Nemo likes to use concentrated force, and create a tornado of destruction, I need to nullify his free reign, spread the pain a bit & make him spread his forces... I'm unsure how I will fully achieve this, but, this is the first step in many that I'm taking.

I guess if I can get a grip on what he is doing in the Central Pacific and launch on OZ, with a small feign on New Zealand beforehand, then maybe I can get him off balance and give some pay back for the losses I'm taking now...

Preamble: Thunderstorms stalled my offensive Air operations in Burma for the past few days. I had intended on bombing airfields and then on the morning of the 18th, some CA's were spotted travelling SW toward Rangoon. I set all my bombers to Naval attack, with 10% search (overkill some might think, but then the weather has been terrible in these parts for a week - Advanced Weather !)

The morning started with 33 o'clock charlie (aka B-17's) hitting Rangoon again.
77 Sally's took off around the same time destined for the CA's, which turned out to be 4 British BB's and 2 CL's. Coming in at 3000 ft - BB Revenge was hit 5 times,BB Valiant & BB Resolution got 1 hit each, BB Warspite, CL Durban & CL Caledon sustained no damage.

60 Sally's at Tavoy responded to the sighting and the commander notified Bangkok of the emergency situation unravelling. BB Warsprite was reported hit.

Finally my Betty's from Bangkok loaded with Torps headed out into the fray ...

But the day wasn't quite over ... and just to prove that Old Dogs take time to learn new tricks, the Allies on the 17th had send PE-2 low into Rangoon to soften up the defences. These low flying bombers were not touched by my high-alt cap. I changed the cap in Rangoon, but no Moulmein[:@]

On the 18th, they paid Moulmein a visit, low altitude again, my cap was too high and his forces were untouched again ... GRRRRR... Commanders mistake cost 22 Sally's sitting, refuelling after their sorties. These kind of mistakes are killing me. Will have to have multiple cap at various alt levels to combat this. Thanks Nemo, another lesson learnt.

CV Musashi arrived a few days ago at Hainan, she is a beauty to behold, 96 planes and some radar.. She had been ordered to rendezvous at Singapore, with small KB#2. This force was intended to head off to Western Australia for a bit of hunting. Had the Allies been coming down the Burmese coast a few days later, I would not have been able to respond. Now they have joined up and are going FULL speed toward Rangoon. Another SCTF is headed for Port Blair.

Other News:
[*] 2 TK's were hit with torps at Palembang, I had seen the SS on the 17th, but due to lack of sleep this week neglected to set my DD's to ASW, and they sat docked.
[*] Canton, is now under siege, I attacked yesterday, taking huge losses, the Allies attacked today, once again taking losses. I forgot this was an Urban hex ... I still hate them!
Troop reinforcements are heading into this area of China.
[*]ML Ashizaki it hit with it's own mine, after the Captain misread the mine map... or one of them got untethered, and sinks!

Sorry once again for this ... but it is just too huge to collate at present given my time constraints at present. All I can say is that the Allies might have thrown a huge spanner into the works, but they have achieved this at a cost. I just hope I can prove Nemo wrong and not have to air transport my forces out of Burma! It would be really nice to crush this, and crush it with aplomb. My plans to invade OZ are not off, but working with few troops available now, I'll have to see what happens in the next few days to week.

Nemo also conceded that Wake Is is important to the Allies after I spied a CVTF near midway, if he comes west he may be in for a bit of a surprise, I'm certainly not ready anywhere for what has happened in Burma, but with 6 CV's and 5 CVL's nearby it will certainly be epic!

I really must make a combat report parser to deal with this scale of combat in VB/java, then if it works well, maybe think about a Tracker inclusion ... I'm really looking for summary type information. Maybe this is not needed, but I really would like my AAR to almost write itself. Impossible probably, but worth a look.
