The way to kill a unit is to use air power! Yesterday,
the Philippine 31st Division at Maubon resisted stoutly
an attack by a tank regiment. Today - aside from ordering
a second tank regiment to go in (which won't have time to
execute now) - I directed all planes on Luzon and Formosa
to hit the place. It surrendered! A secondary factor is
that the defense is short on supplies. Although this location
has a limited supply path to Manila - there are not enough
supplies to go around - so the "votes" to send supplies to
it were short. My real intent, in fact, is to reduce the number
of hexes making supplies (and resources that Manila industry
turns into supplies) - to set up the entire army for the same fate.

I was about to combine 3 regiments into a division when the japs pushed me off the mountain.

And that was a premature test attack - the combined arms ground task force should have
waited for the HQ that is marching in - attacks in the mountains are generally at poor odds
so you want to have maximum support for a small force. In effect a single regiment did this,
although admittedly it was reinforced by a battalion of light tanks and a battalion of asssault
engineers. This may be an indication that the assault engineer unit works as intended. It
is historical, but I had to create the flamethrower aspect of it. IJA did NOT like flamethrowers,
and so relegated them to specialist engineers (unlike US Army, which eventualy issues them
to most infantry formations). [IJN put flamethrowers in its full size SNLF battalions - units otherwise
infantry heavy and support weapons light]

This is an interesting look at the Ice Pack effect on arctic navigation.

Note this view is in the Winter Season. In the Spring Season (March & April),
there is about half this much ice. The "summer" (we call it Monsoon = May
through August) the ice is identical to stock. In the Fall Season (October &
November) the Southern shore of the Arctic Ocean becomes navigable to
shipping - and navigable rivers in Siberia and North America which empty into
that ocean become useful. Mainly of logistical significance, permitting export
of resources in particular, invasion is also a possibility. The US Army put a
radar site at Barrow to detect such an effort. The river system in North America
is open all the way to Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake in the NE Map corner.
[Here you will find in particular major mines, including the main source of wartime
uranium, and a gigantic lead mine; oil produced here is not sent out by sea,
however - it "appears" at Whitehorse - where there is a rinfery - moved IRL from
Texas - to which it was sent by a small pipeline. That means you get fuel and
supplies at Whitehorse - assuming you repair (move actually) the refinery.]
In Siberia, the most significant river is the Lena - it goes almost to the Trans-Siberian
RR - and indeed DOES connect to a spur of it - the last useful port is on the rail line.
There are tiny transports on these rivers - useable only in monsoon (summer) and
fall - but landing craft would appear if called - and shallow draft ocean ships could
enter from the ocean in fall (only).

1) IF you refuel - it steals movement points (ops points) from your task forces;

2) It is hard to coordinate task forces - they have a tendency to fall short of goal by one
hex - and not be able to refuel!

Manila Falls! To the first assault - unexpectedly - recon said units present.
Just as IRL, undefended (Mac declared it an open city and
evacuated military units - to limit damage)
Just as IRL in 1945, when Yamashita also ordered it undefended,
it was NOT spared major damage: bombing attacks destroyed
most of the port and airfields. Oh well, at least one of the first
units into the city was an engineer regiment!
Almost all of Luzon is under control - Clark and Bataan alone remain -
with something like 30 units at Clark. We are moving in reinforcements
from three directions - and starting a massive air bombardment. But the
IJA was an artillery army - and we landed many heavy gun units early -
and it is these that will do the real bombardment. [They broke the back
of resistance on Bataan in 20 minutes from first shell fired. Veterans of
WWI bombardments said nothing in their experience was comparable.]

We also get to see the first clear evidence of how my new ASW
bomb devices work. RHS now has, for the first time in AE, but
modeled on our WITP experiments, air ASW ordnance. This has
several names:

ASW Bombs (because they were called that)
AS DC (because they were called that)
AS torpedoes (because they were called that)

These come in different flavors - all with the standard ASW weapon
"armor penetration value" used with ALL kinds of ASW weapons: 22mm -
which actually is the AP design value of Hedgehog - and which was the
hull thickness of a German submarine's pressure hull.
Otherwise they have an effect which is the Matrix standard for ALL
kinds of ASW weapons = the weight of the charge.
They have a range as all ASW weapons do = depth in feet - but this
is not used by Matrix code - it is simply doing what I was once told by
a chief programmer to do: "set the data right, and let us make the code right"
They have an effect which is a statistical matter: for dumb bombs and
DC it is a function of the number dropped times their lethal radius;
for smart bombs and DC (with sensors) it is a multiple of that related to
their operational effectiveness - a low value intiger; for AS torpedoes,
it is a large multiple - because this one weapon was very effective.
But in ALL cases, they are defined as bombs - the only device code uses
vs submarines from planes. However - in this turn we see an AS bomb dropped
by a Walrus on a merchant ship - and it works as I intended it to. [Using what you have, dropping a DC on a merchant, isn't good for the ship. Actually a near miss would be worse than a direct hit!]

In Malaya we also took Taiping without opposition. Units are starting to meet up,
but many units are still strung out, and all the divisions remain so except for the
18th, far to the rear. In the center the one surviving unit is in danger of being wiped out by air strikes before we reach its position - which is fine by me. As in Luzon, it appears the enemy is using a bastion defense - unreinforced. No enemy in sight on the Western route even as far away as Kuala Lumpur. The first units are now moving on it. The western drive, or at least its armor, probably will overtake the drive down the center RR - by infantry - never mind it was long ahead. The real battle will be in the South, I guess.

In China Japanese forces have finally got assembled and are driving on multiple fronts, clearing out isolated pockets, and well on the way to linking up the rail system from South to North - which is my intention. I am pessimistic how much will move over rail - but rail movement of resources is immune to enemy submarine attacks! It is a good move, in theory. Why wait until 1944 to do it? [Never mind there is no rail link in stock - there was IRL and there is in RHS; I fixed the breaks - just as I fixed the connections between Manchukuo and Russia. But there are gage issues - it won't be an efficient connection. A crude way of representing that this alien rail system is not going to run by Japanese efficiency standards.]

Things are staging in the Pacific - but none were executed today. Soon!

It would seem the freedom loving comrades of Moho would rather become part of the Great union of Soviet Socialist than be sub servant to the fascist zaibatsu regime that you represent. The history of these people seems to give reason for their actions.

The Mohe (or Malgal, Mogher) were a Tungusic people in ancient Manchuria. They are sometimes considered the ancestors of the Jurchens, modern-day Manchus and other Tungusic peoples. According to some records, they originally dwelt near the Liao River and later migrated southward. They were involved in the ancient history of Korea: The records of the southern Korean Kingdoms of Baekje and Silla during the 1st century and 2nd century AD include numerous battles against the Mohe. Later they became subject to the northern Korean kingdom of Goguryeo and its successor state, Balhae.

The Mohe were divided into various tribes, the most powerful of which were the Sumo Mohe.[citation needed] The Sumo Mohe were eventually conquered by the Goguryeo, and some other Mohe tribes by Sui Dynasty China. Many Mohe moved back toward their northern homeland in this period. The "Mohe" section of the "Beidi Zhuan" (北狄傳, Communications of the Northern "Di" Barbarians) of the "Jiu Tang Shu" (舊唐書, Old Book of Tang) states: "Their country is all (or "roughly") composed of some tens of 'bu' (roughly "tribes," but also just generally meaning "divisions"), each having a chief, some of whom are attached to the Goguryeo, and some of whom serve as common people (i.e., vassals) to the Tujue."

The Mohe also participated in the kingdom of Balhae, 698-926. The founder of Balhae, Dae Joyeong was possibly a former Goguryeo general of Sumo Mohe stock, although the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk Yusa) written by Koreans several hundred years later states that he was of Goguryeo stock.[1] After the fall of Balhae, few historical traces of the Mohe can be found, though they are considered to be the main ethnic group that became the Jurchen.

The name of the Mohe also appears as "Maka" in "Shin-Maka" (Japanese 新靺鞨, しんまか) or "New Mohe," the name of a dance and the musical piece that accompanies it, which was introduced to the Japanese court during the Nara Period or around the beginning of the Heian Period from the Balhae Kingdom. In modern Japanese historical texts, the name of the Mohe is annotated with the "kana" reading Makkatsu (まっかつ), which is probably a reading pronunciation based on the standard Sino-Japanese readings of the Chinese characters used to transcribe the ethnonym of the Mohe.

The ethnonym of the Mohe bears a notable resemblance to that of the later historically attested *Motgit (in Middle Chinese. Chinese characters: 勿吉, pinyin: Mòjí, Korean: 물길 [Mulgil], Japanese: もつきつ [Motsukitsu]), as well as to that of the medieval Merkits, who opposed the rise of the Mongols led by Genghis Khan.

One of the tribes of the Mohe, the Heishui Mohe, eventually became the ancestors of the Jurchens, from whom the Manchu originated.[2]
