Should also note that another strategic implication is that he lost a lot of CAs and CLs (8 good ones), as well as BB North Carolina and CLAA San Juan. Only 10 or so DDs.

Combine that with 3 CAs sunk in the Bay of Bengal during this same time period, and he's up to around 16 CAs sunk and 5 good CLs sunk (total of 19 according to Tracker).

This should have later implications for the naval war. I know he gets more CAs and CLs, but he's higher than historical losses so far.

Aircraft R&D and production adjustments over the next 6 months

Realistic R&D is OFF, so I have the freedom to move things around, however I am not doing so except on a few airframes that will plug egregious holes in the OOB. It's too cheesy for me. I used it to skip to the Ki-43-IV, hardly a wonder plane, and skip the A6M5b. The A6M5c came online in mid-December 1942, with the A6M5 having come online in November 1942. I also skipped the B6N1 and all the way to the first Ki-100 in the Tony line. I didn't realize the full ramifications of unrealistic R&D until late in 1942, so the effects are not large here except on the Tony line, which had a very late arrival date. It is hardly a wonder plane also, but it does fill a very important gap in the IJAAF OOB. I am expecting this to be the biggest impact from having realistic R&D set to OFF.

IJA

Ki-44-IIc Tojo: January 1, 1943; 2x30 R&D Factories. Currently building 30 out of 90 Tojo-IIa, will transition to at least 90 Tojo-IIc.

Ki-46-III Dinah: January 1, 1943; 1x15 R&D Factory. Currently building 0 out of 5 Ki-46-II Dinah. Unsure what I will do with the extra factory, I only need 1x5 or 1x15 here.

Ki-43-IV Oscar: May 12, 1943; 3x30, 1x40 R&D Factories. This will be a kamikaze, probably.

Ki-100-I Tony: This plane seems to be getting shafted on the engine bonus, only receiving it once in a blue moon. 4x30 R&D Factories. Current arrival date is 44/9, but if I can get the engine bonus going every day starting in June then I could be looking at an arrival date in late 1943. That would be nice.

Others:
Ki-84a Frank has 5x30 factories still repairing, and 1x55 factory that I started with.
Ki-45 KAId Nick has 1 factory at 0(30). I recently decided I needed this plane until I got the Randy night fighter.
Ki-67-Ia(T) Peggy has 4 factories repairing: 8(22), 16(14), 8(22), and 12(18). Should get this in late 1943, so I won't be able to use it for torpedo strikes until 1944, really.

Ki-64-III KAI Dinah has 1 factory at 0(30). Same deal as the Nick - I want it to fill in until I get the Ki-102c.

Ki-102b Randy has 2 factories, 10(20) and 9(21). I forget why I decided on this plane, but I think it was recommended by someone that I use it as a kamikaze? It is fast and carries 2 bombs. It might also make a decent interceptor until I get the Ki-83, even though it is classified as a FB: it has enormous guns. I expect it in mid-1944.

Ki-102a Randy has 2 facoties, 6(24) and 3(27). I came late to the party on this Randy. It should arrive in mid- to late-1944.

Ki-84b Frank: NO FACTORIES. I have PDU On, so I shouldn't need this to get to the Ki-84r.

Ki-115a Tsurugi has 1 factory at 9(22). Kamikaze...

Ki-102c Randy has 3 factories, 2(28) + 8(22) + 0(30). I might luck out and get this one in early 1945, otherwise it will arrive too late to be of much use, I think.

Ki-83 has 3 factories at 12(18), 5(25), and 14(16). I might get this in early 1945 also.

Ki-201 Karyu has 2 factories, each at 8(22). Maybe I can get it in mid- to late-1945, if it would even make a difference.

IJN

J2M2 Jack: January 1, 1943; 4x30 R&D Factories. This is currently at 2/43 + 79 points and I will be receiving 8 points per day, so it will begin producing exactly on 1/1/43. Unsure what I will do with these. I will probably build 2x30 and switch the other 2x30 to J2M3 R&D, although usage of the Ha-32 is fluctuating. 2x30 factories, with engine bonus, would have the J2M3 arrive on 8/1/43... Simulating realistic R&D, I would be able to start J2M5 R&D on 7/27/43, which would put its anticipated R&D status at 5/1/44 + 92% on 3/1/44...so an arrival of late March 1944 or April 1, 1944.

B6N2 Jill: February 3, 1943; 4x30 R&D Factories. I probably don't need all 4 of these to produce, but I also don't need to R&D the B6N2a as the only difference is the radar, which arrives when the B6N2a arrives anyway. So I could switch one or more of these factories soon, though it would cost supply... I will probably end up switching 1 factory on 2/3/43 and produce 3 Jills per day until my airgroups are filled out, and then switch a second factory sometime in mid-1943.

N1K1 George: February 1, 1943; 5x30 R&D Factories. I am thinking that I will probably not produce this plane so that I can keep all 5 of these humming along on the N1K2, which would then arrive on July 3, 1943. I would then produce the N1K2 in great numbers as my primary mixed-use LBA. It will probably see extensive action in Burma, sweeping and escorting. I will maintain the Jack line as CAP/interceptors due to the high rate of climb.

P1Y1 Frances: May 1, 1943; 2x30 R&D Factories however one of them is 1(29) as it was recently switched. I am unsure how much of this plane I actually want to produce but given that it is faster than the Betty, it will probably replace it as my LBA strike aircraft and potential kamikaze. The SR4 concerns me, so I may need to spend some supply here to bulk up R&D to get to the P1Y2, which is SR2 although uses the Ha-32 and is 15mph slower at 325. Also shorter legs. Any advice here?

L2D2 Tabby: ETA June 5, 1943; 1x30 R&D Factory. Fluctuating engine bonus. I will produce these only for a little while to get units built out, and then turn it on/off as needed. I want the larger transport capacity and would like to take some burden away from producing the 4E monsters.

A6M2 Sen Baku: May 5, 1943; 2x30 R&D Factories, 1x75 R&D Factory. Fluctuating engine bonus as my production and R&D needs are 90 over. Mostly just producing this plane because I wanted to turn my A6M2 factories into something that didn't cost supply. I figured that I may as well wait until I had R&D'd the Sen Baku before I turned the 2x30 factories into something else (probably a 1954 Wonder Plane, like the Ki-83 or the Karyu or similar). The Sen Baku will probably end up being a kamikaze.

D4Y2 Judy: May 13, 1943; 4x30 R&D Factories. I am producing 90 D4Y1 that will transition to D4Y1 on May 13, and I will begin on the D4Y3 at that time...I may jigger with this, as I have 500 Aichi Ha-60 engines in the pool at all times and will switch the Ha-60 production of 130/month to something else (probably mix of Ha-43 and Ha-33?). This may mean that the D4Y2 is delayed until June 1. If I am able to start in on the D4Y3 R&D at 8 points per day, it would arrive on October 4, 1943: acceptable.

J1N1-S Irving: Sometime in August, 1943, if I am lucky. 2 factories are at 11(19) and 1(29). I will probably just switch one of them to something else. Night fighters suck.

Others:
B7A2 has 1 factory repaired 10(20)
D4Y2-S has 1 factory repairing 13(17)
C6N1 Myrt has 1 factory repairing 17(13)
A7M2 Sam has 2 factories: 8(22) and 10(20)
A7M3-J Sam has 1 factory repairing 7(23)
J7W1 has 1 factory repairing 9(21)
Kikka has 1 factory repairing 8(22)
A6M5d-S has 1 factory at 0(30). Like the Nick night fighter, I recently decently to build this plane. Should get it in late 1943.

A6M8 is humming along with 150 factories, though not all are receiving the engine bonus every turn. Current arrival date is 45/6, so I am expecting this plane sometime in 1944.

Engines

Ha-32: Production 230. Jack R&D/production = 120, B6N2 R&D = 120. I periodically need to turn on Mavis/Emily and Betty production, so even if I bump production to 240, I will not always get the full engine bonus here. I still think I will increase to 240.

Ha-45: Production 270 per month and pool of 685, gaining about 4 per day. I won't want to maintain this level of production forever, but my Frank factories haven't even started to gain R&D points yet and I want to have a nice big stockpile for the engine bonus for as long as possible.

Ha-35: Production 550, with 640 required if I want full engine bonus on all R&D planes using the Ha-35. However, I anticipate being able to cut back on A6M5c production soon and will be able to balance supply and demand.

Ha-33: Production 420 at the moment. Once the D4Y3 R&D begins, I will be drastically short here. I may need to move all Ha-60 production to this line, for a total of 550. That could be online around June 1.

Turbojet: R&D 130, should come online and begin adding to the pool in 1944 (current arrival date 44/11).

Ha-43: R&D 180, should come online in mid-1943 (current arrival date 44/1).

Is my math all screwed up? I just don't see how you can get this plane 6 months early with 1 totally damaged r&d factory. Even with engine bonus! Even if you get it in late 43...you only have two squadrons that could possibly fly it or the Irving. I guess you can stockpile them for a rainy day. As far as NF go, it is a decent frame with SR1... (the only one?).

A6M5d-S has 1 factory at 0(30). Like the Nick night fighter, I recently decently to build this plane. Should get it in late 1943.

Uh oh, did I make a boo-boo? Aside from "recently decently" (posting from work...[:-]), I clearly meant "recently decided" there.

My arrival date (Scen 2) is 44/6. I suppose early 1944 is more likely.

Are you happy with this NF selection? Your game has no house rules, right? I think you are in trouble here...

The Irving? I'm mostly picking it because it comes soonest. Anything is better than nothing. Day fighters on night CAP have got to do worse than even the Irving, right? Same reason I put some R&D into the Nick night fighter. These factories used to be R&D for the Tojo, or perhaps one is my old Val factory. Basically, I had spare factories.

I'm not expecting night bombing until the B-29, but what do I know?

I also have to try to wrap my head around where my perimeter will be when that time comes. It's almost 1/1/1943 and my actual perimeter hasn't shrunken in the slightest. So, having very little idea where he'll come from, it's hard for me to estimate where the action will be at any specific date. If the only thing in range of the night bombers when they arrive is the Marianas and the Philippines, I might end up happy.

Are you saying I'll be disappointed because of the Irving's low speed? I do have a factory going on the D4Y2-S, which I picked some time before that. Given that it's halfway repaired now, I might get it at the end of 1943.

Obviously I'd love the Denko, but until I know whether a night fighter will actually matter in, say, August 1945...

I guess I never thought night bombing was the restricted to the B29...[:D] I hope you are right.

No, I was curious to see only two less than halfway finished research facilities considering it is 1/43. And both Navy with their limited air squadron availability. I don't count the Randy factory at 8 since that plane comes so late.

Don't tell anybody, but I basically forgot all about night fighters other than a throwaway factory on the D4Y-S as some little bird told me that speed was king, and the Judy's pretty fast (cheap to build, too). Night bombing just hasn't been a thing so far in our game. I expect it to be later, when he's back in range of industry. That should be around B-29 time, I'd think.

Otherwise, I expect I'd just face things like what I'm doing in my Allies games. Bombing of airfields. That can suck, and as much as it hurts in that one place, airfields aren't exactly my empire's lifeblood, you know?

I basically listed everything I'm producing. As you can see, I skewed pretty heavily towards 1942-1943 airframes with just the basics (aside from the Ki-83 and Karyu to a lesser extent) for the late war.

Some more looks at econ. Not a lot happening in terms of action right now.

Current game date January 10, 1943.

I'm a bit short on fuel in the Pacific, which I'll rectify soon. I've been concerned with my fleet off Australia, but that's not a good excuse. There's plenty of extra at Balikpapan.

Oil was piling up at Palembang, so I had shipped it all out, and in the interim I accumulated just a whole bunch of fuel there. I think fuel is flowing down to Palembang from Medan, as I had sucked it almost dry a few months ago and it has almost 200,000 Fuel again. It only produces 918 per day, so I think the 180 per day was coming down from the north part of the island in big bunches at once.

Working on getting the fuel out again. I have a large stockpile at Cam Ranh Bay, as I didn't want it flowing down to Singapore so I've had stockpiling there turned on since war's start. It is also my drop point for the little tankers from Miri and Brunei, which are almost dry at this point. I can tailor the convoys to supply now, and keep some TKs in reserve to replace losses.

Manila is accumulating resources, oil, and fuel from shorter legged convoys from Malaya, Borneo, and Java. I'll continue doing this, as his subs are now more effective, and haul it back to Japan in big doses beginning sometime this spring. I probably need to start doing that out of Singapore as well.

I don't have a whole lot of HI built up. I don't expect HI to be my choke point, but just in case I'm beginning to "pull a PaxMondo" - I have built several 19-point TKs to within 7 days of completion and then turned them off. I'll complete them later if I need to.

I turned off 75 MerSY on this latest day, as I also disabled production on another 19-point TK. So I should be running a 4-point deficit in MerSY, which I can clearly sustain for a while.

NavSY is still cranking ships out. I'll have the first Unryus in April, and at that point I'll probably start to curtail the production or else maybe produce some more subs. We'll see. So far the attrition on my subs has been light, with only 10 sunk. I have 55 still active. I have had moderate success with them, but nothing major since getting Enterprise in the opening days of the war. Mostly, they are providing recon on his movements and sinking the odd xAK or xAKL.

ARM and VEH points... I'm nearing when I can shut off some ARM factories, I think. The VEH points I have noticed see-sawing a little bit, as I upgrade units. My pool will take a big hit, and then rapidly gain points. As you'll see from my WITP Chart screenshot in the next post, I'm "only" producing 250 VEH points. My tank divisions are almost done and they don't suffer much against the Chinese at Chungking, so I'm not expecting heavy replacements anytime soon.

Global supplies are OK, I suppose. Almost 5 million! Fuel continues to climb, but then I still have Oil pumping. I'll run out of Oil outside of Japan in less than 1 year, I think.

I could stand to ship more resources into Japan, but right now a very large portion of my xAKs are damaged or in use off of Australia. I'm actually a bit concerned with my shipping level, as I have lost 228 xAKs/xAKLs/AKs thus far in the war. I have 440 xAKs in service, and only 5 AKs remain.

The chart...

I'm trying to stockpile some things right now, like a pool of A6M5c and Ha-45 engines (currently over 700). Once the Frank enters service, I'll shut a lot of those factories off as I won't need the engine bonus anymore for R&D.

I'd like to get my HI saved per day up to about 4000 over the next few months, which would have me at ~2M HI by the end of 1943.

Image

You can see that I have a "surplus" of over 31,000 Supply per day, however on good days my Supplies only go up by about 11,000. I am still conducting a massive bombing campaign against Chungking. I'm just hoping that the eventual VPs will be worth all this expenditure. It should be almost the entire Chinese army, if not the entire Chinese army. I'm making slow progress there. I should have it in hand by summer, and am hoping that he won't have made too much progress in the Pacific by then.

Finally, the resource history in Japan.

You can see that I've been poor on the Oil shipments, but the Fuel hasn't been so bad. I need some more TKs to run the Oil. I've used a few returning xAKs to haul Fuel, but I don't have that capability for the Oil.

I would love to get the Resource reserves over 150 days if possible, but it's going to be tough. Fully 15% of my non-Honshu resources are on Sumatra. Another 1.2M are in Manchukuo, with 920K at Port Arthur that will flow to Fusan but not as quickly as I'd like. Still no idea why it's all pooling at Port Arthur. I've never run Resource convoys out of there, but have from Fusan since Day 2. So annoying.

I need to set up some pickups of Resources from Malaysia, Borneo, and some of the smaller PI, but that will cost some Fuel - I haven't picked them up already because they've been out of the way. Now that I'm expecting somewhat of a lull in the action as I'm done adventuring, and he has yet to begin...

Image

I've also shipped out a bunch of supply from Japan lately. Mostly to regional hubs, so that I'm not short of supplies in any one theater. Singapore/Soerabaja, Truk, Manila, the Marianas... also have some 10s of thousands scattered at initial areas of resistance, such as Noumea.

through January 12, 1943 - some tidbits

I actually turned off 55 A6M5c production this turn, with 68 planes remaining in the pools after upgrading the rest of the CV/CVL/CVE groups. CVL Chitose/Chiyoda groups remain in A6M2, but I won't upgrade them until I'm back around 100 in the pools. The Jack and George will be used for my CAP/IJN Sweep frames for LBA. I'll keep a few groups of A6M3a for the Pacific theater, but every group in Burma is going to get the Jack or George. Some groups in the Pacific will get the Jack, which I am expecting to hold up better against potential Corsair sweeps due to its higher rate of climb. I'm beginning to think that I'm not producing nearly enough Jacks, at only 2 per day. I probably need more like 3-4, but I'm really hesitant to spend the supply on the factories.

KB is back at Singapore after an extended period operating off the coast of SW Australia. There were some sub scares. Several ships need minor yard time, and Shokaku still needs to be repaired from the brainless CA Tone commander several months ago. She needs about 3 weeks in the Singapore yard for just 7 Float and 4 Engine damage (will drop to 5 Float and then see what Pier Side says). Aircraft are finally fully updated and equipped. Status and counts:

Akagi
30 A6M5c - Avg Exp 80, Ld Air 63. 43 kills.
30 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 58. This group got hit hard in the IO. Only 6 pilots with 60+ Exp.
27 B5N2 - Avg Exp 72.

Shokaku
27 A6M5c - Avg Exp 79, Ld Air 57. 72 kills. Could stand to change leaders.
27 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 68.
23 B5N2 - Avg Exp 73.

Zuikaku
27 A6M5c - Avg Exp 72, Ld Air 64. 68 kills.
27 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 65.
22 B5N2 - Avg Exp 71.

Hiryu
27 A6M5c - Avg Exp 76, Ld Air 65. 105 kills.
26 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 60.
18 B5N2 - Avg Exp 76.

Soryu
23 A6M5c - Avg Exp 73, Ld Air 66. 59 kills.
23 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 66.
18 B5N2 - Avg Exp 66.

Fighters - 134, Bombers - 133, Torpedo planes - 108. A bit light on fighters, honestly... I could resize upwards a little bit, and probably will while the ships are repairing. I may tweak DB/TB numbers as well to reflect pilot quality. Makes sense to have more TBs than DBs if my TB pilots are 5-8 points better across the board.

Junyo
19 A6M5c - Avg Exp 83, Ld Air 54. 29 kills.
19 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 77.
18 B5N2 - Avg Exp 64.

Hiyo
19 A6M5c - Avg Exp 71, Ld Air 64. 25 kills.
19 D4Y1 - Avg Exp 70.
18 B5N2 - Avg Exp 65.

Zuiho
21 A6M5c - Avg Exp 75, Ld Air 64. 174 kills (used this unit over Geraldton and Darwin while Zuiho was repairing).
9 B5N2 - Avg Exp 66.

Chuyo
18 A6M5c - Avg Exp 64, Ld Air 64. 19 kills.
9 B5N2 - Avg Exp 55.

Unyo
18 A6M5c - Avg Exp 62, Ld Air 32. 10 kills. Well, gotta change this guy.
9 B5N2 - Avg Exp 57.

Fighters - 105, Bombers - 38, Torpedo planes - 63. This would be MKB, such as it is. CVL Ryuho is available but still sitting in Tokyo Bay, awaiting escorts mostly. And a plan. I don't have a plan for a KB/MKB split yet. I think that, without Kaga, I need to keep them operating together. The big fleet CVs are just not powerful enough with only 5 decks, only 1 of which is equal to a USN deck. I'm a bit hesitant to use Chuyo/Unyo with the fleet CVs, really, so those 2 will probably operate independently. I may take on entire flights of Kates and begin escorting enormous TK convoys from Singapore.

But first I need to organize all my TKs into groupings. I'll do that soon, but things are running "well enough" right now.

CA Suzuya was hit with at least one torpedo outside Carnarvon on the very last day of 1942. She is back at Soerabaja and will return to action in several months.

My sole remaining LSD, Nigitsu Maru, had Rufes on board from Kamikawa Maru. They automatically upgraded to A6M5s and appear to be operating. Interesting. It's only 6, so probably not a big deal, but interesting.

Bits of a JAAF Base Force and JNAF AF Bn are doomed at Carnavon. Mostly support and a few radars. About 1/3 of 18th Division, mostly support devices, is still there as well. Airlifting out is going slow. 33rd Division has been successfully extracted to Soerabaja, with a piece at Port Hedland still. About 2/3 of 18th Division is at Port Hedland as well. I'll evacuate that place soon, except for a token air force. He'll be able to bomb the airfield regularly soon, if he wants to.

In my game with you, I had slightly more than double your present reserves of supply in the Home Islands (3.3 million) as of turn 400 - that's the figure for the HI only, not a global figure. Globally, you're pretty much 1 million supply ahead of my figure on turn 400 (4.8m versus 3.9m), which I assume is to do with the extra supplies in Scen 2.

It's the usual Japanese balancing act; you need the supplies on the frontline, but you also need them for the showdown in 44-45. I'd just keep an eye on your supply levels, because I'm far from frugal when it comes to using supplies.

I have my supply spread out pretty well, I think. I got up to 1.7M in Japan, but I don't need it there until later.

It's been 72 days since the screenshot here:

And here's the update:

So in 72 days, I'm +32 days on Fuel stockpile but -50 days on Oil. This is unavoidable in the long term, but I need to be doing a better job of bringing what excess Oil I have in the SRA back to Japan. The reason my Fuel stockpiles are up so much is because I've been using fast xAKs as well as TKs/AOs to haul Fuel. I have been keeping my 18-knot AOs for fleet duty, which has hurt my hauling capacity a little bit. USN subs are also starting to be a scare.

I'm also +12 days on Resources and haven't changed anything. By and large, I'm hauling from Okinawa, Hokkaido, and Fusan. I may have a few set up to shuttle Supplies to Hankow or Shanghai with a return trip for Resources, but they aren't much.

Supplies are about +12,000 per day globally and in Japan. My usage appears to be about 19,000 supplies per day across the map, as my supply production is 31283/day. I'll put up a quick shot of the global screen next.

Places with Oil piling up to haul back measured in "Japan Deficit Days" (as you can see, there isn't much...):

Sumatra: 206401 (+1800/day) = 26 Japan Days' worth, with +1 Japan Day's worth every 4.5 days
Borneo: 196148 (+2610/day) = 24 Japan Days' worth, with +1 Japan Day's worth every 3.1 days
Malaysia: 165799 = 21 Japan Days' worth (hauled from Sumatra)
Luzon: 147321 = 18 Japan Days' worth (hauled from Borneo)
Hokkaido: 120714 (+150/day) = 15 Japan Days' worth, with +1 every 53 days
Java: 92123 (+260/day) = 11 Japan Days' worth, with +1 every 30 days (and more hauled from Boela)
China: 68168 (+700/day) = 8 Japan Days' worth, but mostly inaccessible in Urumchi (50000...)
Miri/Brunei: 36119 (+1700/day) = 4 Japan Days' worth, this has been slowly trending down

I am planning not to haul any more from Hokkaido until later, when I can't get any more from the south of the map.

There is a total of about 82000 Oil elsewhere (Mindanao, etc.), which is about 10 days' worth. This all adds up to about 130 more Japan Days of Oil that haven't been hauled back. My global Oil production is -2770/day compared to usage. I am currently losing 3 days out of every 4 in Japan, so at current hauling rate I would run dry in Japan in something like 250 days, or around November 30, 1943. Gotta do better. If I can get all of the present stockpiles abroad back home, we're looking at April, 1944 before we start burning Fuel at an accelerated pace in Japan.

I may need to build a few more TKs/AOs. I have several 8000-capacity TKs at 2 days from completion, but am unwilling to turn MerSY back on just yet as it would compromise my +5000 HI savings per day.

So far, I have lose 3 AOs with 8000-capacity, 2 TKs with 11600, 1 TK with 7950, and 1 TK with 8150. I have had 2 dud attacks on 2 different Tonan Maru TKs. After their present trips, they will be escorted by CVEs Chuyo/Unyo and 2 AVs, in the enormous TK convoys mentioned a few posts back.

Active TKs/AOs:

31x 1250
2x 5785
12x 7950
9x 8000
8x 8150
6x 10400 (3 designated for fleet duty)
6x 11500 (4 designated for fleet duty)
11x 11600
6x 12800
5x 15350 (the Tonans)

Once CVE Kaiyo is out, I'll be producing 1x 11600 TK at a time. I have a few turned on to get to within 2 days of completion. I'm willing to burn the HI to get them almost done, and then wait until I need them, as I don't want to give up free VPs in a port strike if they're just sitting still somewhere in 1945. I am anticipating the loss of 1-2 TKs per month on average for the rest of 1943, and then probably 2 per month on average in 1944. At least 2. We'll see how it goes.
