Some attacks are bound to succeed, others are bound to fail. But overall, the axis should suffer losses: that only is success enough. But of course, there are combats that are mor important than others...

This one is a full success, but it doesn't achieve any significant purpose beyond weakening the Germans.

As a contrast, this combat is of outmost importance: not only winning it removes Manstein, a success by itself, but it opens up exploitation by advancing along the mountain range. This cuts the German army in half.

This was "a bridge too far", but success here would also have remove another headquarter and threatened isolation of the German units in the Massif Central.

That's two worthy paratroopers that will go missing for some time!

For Germany, saving the 1st SS and an HQ is a very good result.

The Russians are still running behind Hata, but they won't be catching him yet!

The Chinese try an attack with whatever is available on Yamashita. But this will fail. This doesn't mean that Yamashita is saved: he finds himself much in the same situation as Hata in Manchuria.

An attack on a territorial unit in Korea.

It could be argued that this attack was not necessary and that it risked flipping the 5-4 infantry which is now in reach of Seoul. This would forget the fact that the end of turn has a 50% chance of happening this impulse, and then a 70% chance of happening in the next axis impulse: that gives but a 15% chance that this unit will act again. And if the turn ends, peace will be enforced.

It seemed better to use it to destroy Japanese units. The unit was not turned down, to the sorrow of the Japanese.

The Russians attack here a weak stack, with weak units.
There is absolutely no military interest but more attrition.
This attack will fail miserably.

It's more of the same here: victory will not achieve a significant military result, but keeping the pressure on the Germans is absolutely necessary. It is now necessary to destroy more than they can rebuild.

It is not that Lybia is that important. But clearing up the Italians from this place would more or less secure North Africa. And the units there have nothing better to do.

Still, that's not a smart attack: any Italian unit destroyed in Lybia will be rebuilt in Italy: Lybia is, as a matter of fact, a prison camp...

There seem to be no way to contro China now. The Japanes just hope to keep Shangaï and Haichow. That seems reasonable. Why bother sticking now to uncontraollable areas ?
But they still have to pull off an orderly retreat. That's not that easy!

Germans do one counterattack. Success could remove Koniev. Their won't be any other counterattack.

The allies have a new opportunity to push Germany.

This impulse will lose Korea to the Japanese who have retreated their armored corps from central China. That unit can yet be saved for the oncoming debacle.

Despite the rain and rather bad odds, the allies are not giving any respite to the German.
Loss of units on the allied side is not a problem. Disorganization isn't either : that turn should end up at some time, no ? It's now at 70% chance... And their is always the possibility of a good roll that will destroy yet more German units.

The fact is that now, the allies are battering the Germans to keep them weak.

But Marseilles is a total failure.
Occupying it might have led to the collapse of Vichy in a future turn, with only Lyons remaining to capture, but that won't happen as soon as it seemed possible.

The Americans have shoulders strong enough to bear the loss of three units.
