A slight pause in operartions, with only minor action, if you call losing another DD and a CL to submarines/airpower minor.
Wobbly is promising that as soon as GG hits size 4 Im finished, and I think he may be right.

The biggest lesson this game has taught me.

Dont bother even building airfields on Papua, build them big at Gassmatta, Lea. Holliandia and madang, and if time permits, the Admiralties. They cant be closed down from AUS, and give japan a chance to strike back at invasion fleets. Ive loads of planes now stuck at Dobodura, and I wont see them again I feel.

Only other report is GG is full of shipping again, and tonight if Ive got it right Mushia? (bloody spelling) and 2 kongo class hit the place.

Way this game is going the CVs will get em tomorrow, I havent spotted them for 2 days.
This will be the last major effort at GG, until some troops arrive, Ill be going to a pull everything back to Truck mode for quiet a while.

bloody disapointment

Post by herbieh »

send into GG 3 of the worlds mightest BBs, they run into a few lousy PT boats, and then run home packing. Crikeys, sure Kirishima hit a mine, but should that cancel a mission!. One skipper is going to get carpetted!

High Command issues new orders, Run away! Clear the oceans!. retire the Aircraft. Let the enemy advance, only minor forces to harass until the end of the month. Then we counter.

The mines in the hex beside GG brought that little op to an end, im going to fast transport some troops into it next time before any major efforts, and turn it majically back into a jap minefield.

Scene 17, once the barrier is brocken is heart breaking as the Jap.

Hi Herbieh,
I found out the hard way in my Oz campaign any little interuption like sub attack would cancel a BB run. Even if they miss. I had 4-5 canceled this way and was the main reason I couldn't keep PM closed. I think it has to do with timing. If they are held up enough they won't have time to bombard and get out of Dodge before dawn.
BTW I also have stopped USN raids with mines the same way. One of Condor's CAs hit mines on the way in and on the way out. That was fun. :)

Naughty

Post by herbieh »

We traded a DD each lost to Subs that turn. ACL and 5 DDs slipped into GG last night, bombed the place pretty heavily and got away!

Can you believe it
A million barges are headed toward GG with some troops from Dobadura on them, they are to try to capture the dot to the east of GG, and well. to divert his airpower as I try to clear some targets of greater worth out of the place.
Ive spotted another attack convoy headed towards Woodlark? Dobodura?, rabual? Who the hell knows, where ever it lands Ive no ground troops to stop it, This is getting very very bad.

The only Troop reserve i have is one lousy fast transport load over near Munda, still 35 days before a new Division arrives.
So Im a whipping boy until then.
Down to 2 BBs in theatre now, Kirishima will have to go home
I'm not risking Mushia again, and Hiei really needs a rest.

I hope wobbly is having fun.

LOL. Run away! - reminds me of King Arthur as he faced the white rabbit (from Monty Pythoon). I believe setting your BBs to patrol/no retire makes them have more backbone... but then they might become targets for LBA.
If your only harassing - try setting your Mavis boats to Night naval attacks. A torp in the right place might go a long way. Plus, they do pretty good straffing attacks too.

thanks for the advise, I was under the impression only the catalinas got away with that one, Ill give it a go. yes Monty Python is always lurking somewhere in my mind.

Wirriways!!!!. best anti barge aircraft I have ever seen. So for those of you who think they are useless because your games never get to the fighting your way North stage, just wait.
The barge convoy was blasted to pieces, tattered remnants will try to unload at goodenough island.
Nothing else to report, thunderstorms grounded everything else. Wobbly in his turn E mail said hes going out on a limb that turn, and now that 5 AK convoy has disapeared, so me thinks next turn Ill probably get a shock and a half. If it hits Dobadura Im really deep in the poo, millions of base troops, no combat troops at all.

The ramifications of my massive defeat of Wunpunko and rennell Island still reverberate, thats where most of my land troops are stuck, there and PM. if Dobadura fell, that would be disaster.

Oh the doom, Oh the Gloom!!!

Somehow wobbly knew that I was landing troops on the dot to the east of GG, now he has about 1000 troops to my 300 there, thats brocken that little plan.
Not much else happening. Bad weather keeps us pretty quiet.
cant believe the lack of of troop reinforcements this scenerio!, same with aircraft.
never mind, in 30 game days, I will retake GG!!

And port Adelaide will win a final - not!

he just keeps on coming

Post by herbieh »

The weather begins to clear and wobblies CVs begin the softening up process, hitting Dobadura, where a AP and a DD die quickly.
I only have about 5 other ships anywhere in range, I will probably lose them, ce la ve.
I have 2 BB, 1cvl, 9ca, 3 cl and 20 plus dd at truck, and so many aps its not funny. In 35 days I will have 6 new regiments.
Wobbly is going to hit Dobadura or Buna next, and will capture it/them. all my combat troops are coming back over the mountains from PM, but wont arrive in time.
What to do. Well hope dobadura falls, not buna. get the troops back, and try to tie him down.
Load up every ship Ive got when the 6 regiments finally arrive, and re take GG, cut him off!
Thats the plan.
For what it is worth Ive ordered 60 plus LBA for a night port attack from munda to gg, hope something comes of it.
His LBA closes dobadura, only a dozen cripples left there now.
Desperate times, will he over extend?

Hm looks like you're knee deep in it here.......
Well, playing the side with the shortest straw does have its charm :)

Do you think a counterattack to recapture GG will be wise as long as his cv's are around? They've minced everything you've showed him thus far!

If you only could knock out a few of them, things would light up quite considerably. Think I would have retreated and tried to give the impression that I had been defeated. After a month or so he might get careless. If you can manage to put together a force of 100+ Betties and Nells and release them all one beautiful day....

Putting high exp Mavis recon planes on night torp missions could also bag you a few ships. Gather 2-4 sqd's in Rabaul, put one on port night attack at GG and the rest on naval night attack.

Otherwise rumors says that Wobbly doesn't like mines...) Seems like you've knocked out quite a few of his sweepers and minelayers!

Nothing's as sweet as bagging a major victory when everything seems lost! So go on and hand out a Manstein backhand blow that sends the yanks reeling :D

Hey PZB, nice post, some good points, yes the short straw is interesting.

Intelligence was correct( if you recon just the 1 place for a few days straight it sort of gives the game away), a large cruiser force blew into Dobadura, .......and sank 3 barges.

His CVs are deep north into the solomon sea, they sink 1 ap and a crippled DD, basically targets are thin, Im even evacuating rabual.

The plan is this, I dont need to give much of an impression of defeat, at the moment, I cant stop him.

But Truk is full of ships, and although it will be a while yet until I have 3 carriers and a few more major ships, I have enough. Truk is also full of fighters, that I am hording
When the 2 Divisions arrrive I expect wobbly will think he is just mopping up, I reckon he will be trying to take Lea by then, but deep in conflict over Buna, where a full division from PM is marching to.
Shoho will fient towards lunganville, and then the 2 divisions under all those fighters and carrier CAP will hit GG.
It will be a blood bath, and draw all his ships like flies.

And my CAs? They will be loading up the division at Lunga , and going for a (sorry very very gamey) end run auto victory attempt at Rockhampton.
Thats the plan, 35 to 40 days of getting my ##### kicked ahead, then attack where he aint.
In the meantime, try to minimise losses while yet still appearing to put up a maximum effort, tricky, but thats why this game is soooooo good.

Shortland aircraft (24 zeros, 40+ vals, 30+ kates are on naval strike, 60+ betties at Night Port attack await the weather to clear)
Thats the plan

Another disaster

Post by herbieh »

this turn opened OK, the LBA night air attack flew to GG, hit a AV and 2 apds, good!

The day opens with his CVs only 4 hexes south of Rabual. Munda becomes the only field socked in - typical!, and 100 a/c dont fly
His Cvs then hit my only forces at sea, 1cl, 4 dd sunk.
Not an enjoyable evening.

Post by herbieh »

Finally got 2 turns in last night.
Situation - Im buggard
My only air power left is at Munda, about 60 A/C there, and 60 A/c at shortlands, and 100 zeros at Truk
elswhere my fields are closed, or I have no base forces available. its mainly the later that is hurting.
Shortland continues to night attack GG, with success, 1 or 2 ships hit every night, for little loss.If only his CVs would come over so Munda Vals will get into the game
Dobadura is his target, it will fall, no assualt troops there at all.
Buna is moderately defended, but a full division is marching over from PM, its really a race I think
Wobbly Cvs are now just 2 hexes south of gasmatta, showing how helpless I am at the moment.
I continue to grit my teeth and say, thankyou sir, may I have another!

Not many turns this week, Wobbly has a few things to sort out.
His invasion fleet has hit dobadura, a full division of troops, he will have a pleasant surprise at the lack of troops there, Buna is stocked Ok, but its a good move by him at the moment

GG is empty of ships now, so my LBA has been stood down.
Interestingly it seems very low on assualt troops. A grain of hope for me down the track.
The keep out of the way plan is still on, though he has a nasty habit of appearing in unexpected places.
Not enjoying this a bit at the moment, roll on the next month

Angry

Post by herbieh »

Not happy Jan!

Moved the remains of my short range air to Gassmatta last turn, set it to naval attack.
What happens, a single small raid from GG and his CVs closes the place, and my planes dont launch. Very angry that they didnt launch before his strike arrived, I knew it was a risk, but just 1 strike closing the place from light bombers...... OUCH!!!!

Dobadura falls.
My Regiments 2 to 3 days from Buna at worse.
Hes having a cake walk at the moment
Ship release is at high, and 2 CVs sit at japan, finger up bum
A third is 15 days from arrival in Japan ( Shok, Zuik and Hiyo) I have shoho here at Truk already.
So many transports available its funny, and more coming.
15 days for 1st troops.

Objective for the next 15 days, base force evacs from buna.

Thats better

Post by herbieh »

****** off yesterday, smiling today
yesterday heaps of my A/C got stuck at gasmatta as his raids closed the place, today my fighters flew, the engineers are going well, the fighters culled a healthy number of hudsons over gassmatta
Almost by accident Ive discovered a new tactic, and its going straight to the pool room( aussie joke) I knew wobbly has some minesweepers in GG, they are my No1 target, as I have mines all up the coast of New Gunea, but they have been hiding in Port.
I sent a minelayer submarine into GG, she laid a few mines, the minesweepers activated, and my DBs from Gassmatta got them!

So Im happy.
Im moving all my aircraft back to the shortlands now, as my GG invasion fleet will have to come via the gap between shortlands and Munda, Woodlark now has a small field, all going well the invasion convoy will have some LRCAP all the way.
Wobblies CVs are going home, via E mail Ive been telling him of a grand plan, carriers about to arrive, desperate deeds ect, ect, ect (bit like Tokyo Rose), I hope he is now thinking herbie is going to go for a auto victory suicide run , and wait in ambush for a bit, while I ferry in a few fuel runs to shortlands and the admiralties
Buna troops arrive tomoorow.
A fast transport run is headed to buna to try to pick up some base troops for evacuation.
I still think this isnt over by a long shot

If anyone has any ideas on how I should tackle GG, lets hear em

3CV, 1cvl, 2BB, 9CA, 3CL, 20 dd, 40 ap available. 2 divisions available ( or shouldd be in 2 weeks time)

Thunderstorms

Post by herbieh »

Got to love em, keeps raids on the ground, and allows Engineers to get the damage fixed, and planes evacuated
2 quiet days have passed, 1st fast transport run ducked into Buna, some base troops picked up
counted DDs at truck, actually nearly 25 there, so a 2nd fast force has been formed, and heads south, Tanaka in command
Mines got a AO in GG, smile!

Thats it, hope for some turns this week end.

Thunderstorms

Post by herbieh »

Got to hate em!
Sure they ground all aircraft, but they also let neferious wobbly invasion fleets arrive at buna, and begin unloading.
Well we see how the race went, 2 and a half regiments are ordered to shock attack wobbly invasion at buna, I really need at the least a bitter battle here at buna, something, anything to drag his attention away from GG, and any reserve troops he might be gathering there.
Have ordered Tanaka to attack, 1cl, 6 dd, and another small force 1cl, 4dd to hit dobodura.
High command releases ships!!. 2 cv and escorts sailing south!
15 days until shokaka available, and the troops I desperately need.

Personally I think those who quit this game early are missing a lot. Thing with WITP the poor jap player will face 2 years of this stuff, Im really using this game as a rehearsal for the big event. A successful counter at GG when I dont control rate of reinforcements, or forces released will really boost confidence that in WITP I will be able to achieve it with full control of forces . :D ( hope that makes sense.

BUNA

Post by herbieh »

The battle for Buna has begun, my shock attack failed, but my total number of defensive troops exceeds his total. How long will it take wobbly to get 2 to 1 odds.
that is the question, the answer, lots of dead allied troops , I hope.
a few ships lurking in port at GG, so tonight another mass night attack from Munda. Tanaka approaches at the head of a small task force, another approaches Dobadura as a fient, just to keep wobbly guessing.
A large fast transport is headed towards Munda, Im going to base it there, and evac rennel island, Wobbly is reconning Irau like crazy, so thats his next target, so no real need to keep troops at rennel to get bypassed.

But Buna is the key at the moment, Ive just recieved half a regiment at Truk, I think we will feed it into the battle, to force wobbly to commit more troops.

I think he is stretched, especially for transports. His LBA is not closing me down , in fact I now regret evacing all my engineers from PM, as i think I could have got it open.
Another lesson, putting Jap mavis and co on night naval attack is a waste, nothing doing there.

Submarines are retiring to truk , readying for the offensive, their role will be mining. Also heaps of barges are now at madang, they will be ammo spunges, emptying wobblies coffers before the big boys arrive.
Well thats the details. Operation GG still on, send a turn or two wobbly, Im eager to strike back!!!

Its going to be a bloody period.
1st my betties did a night raid on GG, only got 1 hit on a AV, still, wobbly wont be storing ships there I would think.
Then just about every plane he has( I hope!) hammered the troops at buna, killing over 500.
Then Tanaka arrived, met by 4 CAs and heaps of DDs, a pretty disappointing result in as no long lance hits scored, I think 2 CAs are on the way home. Tanaka survived, but 3 DDs didnt.
The big disappointment was the dobadura raid, 5 dd met 5 AP, all unescorted, 1 lousy hit, then they broke off, sank 2 PT boats on the way out.
dawn and in goes the wobbly deliberate assualt at buna, 0to 1odds, killed another 500 men, but I still out number him 23000 to about 15000.

I estimate about 1 week of resistance, it would be great to get 2 weeks, dont hold that much hope.

plans for tomorrow, snuck 27betties, 50 fighters into gasmatta, a quick strike I hope day after next.
rennel island evacuation departs Munda.

9 days to the atart of a very heavy reinforcement stream.
wobbly recons in Email that the whole japanese army is at buna, he hasnt seen anything yet.
2 regiments at irau put on full alert!!!!
