RE: 23 Dec 41 report
Topic for discussion at the IGHQ Mess this evening: What are the Armed Merchant Cruisers best used for?
In no particular order:
1. Amphibious task force flagship or embedded gunfire support ship as they have reasonable main gun armament. Not good against coastal defence guns though.
2. Single ship raiders against allied strategic logistics convoy routes. Probably not good in the Pacific where USN CVs lurk. Perhaps the Indian Ocean?
3. Picket ships somewhere like NEAF? Risky way to get some intel or cover some naval search gaps.
4. Others?

What are the Armed Merchant Cruisers best used for?
To me, raiders for a short time early in the game. Some even carry mines.
Later on as transports are they are better than xAK.
And then later IIRC one or two convert to AR's.

Clark Field is captured, just leaving Manila and Bataan on Luzon.
Nice, the tough nut is cracked. In addition the other two are non-supporting.
I’m happy with how Luzon is going.
GEN Mac tried to defend all three of Clark, Manila and Bataan about equally and didn’t react or adjust once my extra 2 x Divs showed up.
If I hadn’t of brought the extra Divs this would probably have been a stalemate for months.
Two Divs should arrive at Manila from Clark for my next turn while one stays at Clark to block any breakout attempt from Bataan.
If they are relatively fresh I’ll attack straight away.
Manila still has 2 forts so it will be a deliberate attack to try and knock them down.
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

Night Naval bombardment of Wenchow at 89,58 – BB Division 3, bombardments commence. These ships made it to Shanghai and rearmed before the end of the turn. They’ve been ordered to bombard again tomorrow. I forgot to set the FP groups to fly at night so they didn’t fly spotters... I need to remember to fix that for the next bombardment. There was zero damage showing to industry at the end of the turn.

9 Jan report
Early reports are coming in:
- Manila attack makes good progress at 2:1 dropping forts to 1. IJA disruption and fatigue (d&f) are ok.
- Singapore attack gets 1:1 (very close to 2:1) dropping forts to 2. Despite the airfield showing damage nearly every turn, allied engineers had snuck forts to 3. IJA D&F quite high so the infantry will get a day or two to plan the next attack.
- CL Kashii is hit by three exploding Dutch torpedoes while flagship of an amphibious task force. I thought she’d be a goner, but she’s “only” got 50 float damage so is directed to a nearby port for emergency repairs.

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2) – now that I’ve had time to check it, that was 1.994:1!!! Fatigue and disruption of the attackers is quite high, up in the 30s and 40s so they won’t attack for a few days. Once they recover a bit the next attack should be well over 2:1 as I saw the Aus Bdes reduce their raw AV to about 50 and 70 each, and there are only a few Coys worth of raw AV left in the other allied units.

DD Bulmer is reported to have been sunk near Zamboanga on Dec 07, 1941

A combination of the different time zones and an alignment of Friday evenings/Saturday mornings chilling out at home has seen a flurry of turns.
I'm off to a mate's place to help him drink some of his home brew to celebrate his son completing a second lap of the sun, but should still be able to get through one more turn this evening.

Generally speaking the Dutch torps are not hull shattering.[:D]

RE: 12 Jan report
I'm just waiting for the turn to come back from C.S. so have had a bit of time to review China.
This is the current situation in GEN Okamura's NCAA area of operations.
The plans in this AO, from north to south are:
Mongol Garrison Army: Continue to advance into North China with the 2nd IMB and the 1st and 4th Cav Bdes as far as the dot base at Ningsia. I will then send the 2 x Cav Bdes forward on recon patrols, but they don't have enough combat power to take defended positions. I've just noticed that LGEN Amakasu is still trying to run this operation from Kalgan, so he has been sent a message encouraging him to move forward.
1st Army: LGEN Iwamatsu is on the front line with 37th and 41st Divs. His 1st and 36th Divs are helping to clear the Mountain hex on the Taiyuan-Tatung railway (at A) then if the allied position does not change they will be loaned to 12th Army to help clear Tsiatso (at B). 1st Army will continue to threaten the high road to Sian to try and distract the enemy troops from moving elsewhere, and be available to advance if the allies do react and move. His other units are providing rear area security in garrison roles.
12th Army: LGEN Dobashi has 26, 27, 32 and 35 Divs under command, plus rear area garrison troops. 26th Div will help clear (A) then join him at Tsiaotso (B). 27th and 32nd Divs are clearing the open country east of Nanyang. AFter Sinyang-Nanyang are clear, they will either move back to help clear (B) or if not needed there, move to threaten Sian along the grey road from Nanyang.
20th Army: LGEN Seki has 8, 9, 10 and 11 Divs under command but has temporarily swapped his 8 and 9 Divs for 27 and 32 Divs. 20th Army has been tasked with relieving the defenders of Sinyang and driving the enemy back to Nanyang. Once Nanyang is captured, 20th Army will take over the section of the front from vic Ichang to Nanyang and push forward to maintain contact.

RE: 12 Jan report
GEN Hata as GOC China Expeditionary Army has direct command of 11th, 13th and 23rd Armies in the south.
The plans in this AO from north to south are:
11th Army: LGEN Watanabe commands 3, 6, 13, 34, 39 and 40 Divs. He is currently at Changsha with four of them. 20th Army is about to arrive at Sinyang (A2) and he will hand command of operations in that area over to 20th Army. 13th Div will be loaned to 20th Army, and the "Tank Division" has also been made available for the Sinyang-Nanyang operation. 20th Army will relieve both 13th and 34th Divs so that 11th Army can concentrate at Changsha. 20th Army will then maintain contact with the enemy west and north from Ichang and detach excess Divisions to theatre reserve. After the Tank Division clears Sinyang (A2) and Nanyang (B2), the Tanks will move south to join the main effort vic Changsha (at C).
13th Army: LGEN Sawada is being supervised closely by GEN Hata at Wenchow. He has 15, 17 and 22 Divs under command. GEN Hata has allocated 19 and 20 Divs from theatre reserve to the Wenchow operation (A). Once Wenchow is captured the defenders will be pushed west into rough terrain. 13th Army will then move on Chuhsien (B) before moving west to an assault river crossing to capture either Hengyang or Siangtan (C). By then the "Tank Division" and a couple of Divs detached from 20th Army should have arrived to join in. Objectives D,E,F are the plan if the enemy don't react. I will maintain contact at other parts of the front so that if the allies withdraw at any point I will keep moving the front forward.
23rd Army: LGEN Sakai is at Kukong with most of the 51st Div, waiting for more sub-units to arrive so that it can combine. 104th Div is his only other Div but it needs to garrison Canton until it can be replaced. 19th and 20th Divs may join 23rd Army after Wenchow, or GEN Hata may keep them as his theatre reserve. As it is relatively under strength, 23rd Army will seek to maintain contact and push north from Kukong if the opportunity arises.

Morning Air attack on Merak , at 48,97
Clear skies over Merak. I need to recon Batavia again as my focus has been on recon over Sumatra for the last few days. If Batavia doesn’t have too many fighters the Oscars will start sweeps of Batavia to prepare for the Java invasion.

Group patrol altitude is 20000 – the H81s have the height advantage and I assume radar, so time for the defenders to intercept is quite short.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 17 minutes

Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50
No allied fighters left in the skies over Toungoo. I will sweep Rangoon next as I’ve just spotted a few xAK and a TK, no doubt trying to extract oil and fuel. Recon reports about 20-30 allied fighter based at Rangoon with some of them Blenheim Is, so likely 1 x AVG Sqn and maybe a Buffalo RAF Sqn. I have Nells/Bettys flying naval search at Chumphon with HQ 21 Air Flotilla stocked with torpedoes, but don’t want to launch them until after I’ve swept some allied fighters from Rangoon.

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 60619 troops, 661 guns, 469 vehicles, Assault Value = 2010
Defending force 32030 troops, 433 guns, 362 vehicles, Assault Value = 425
Japanese adjusted assault: 1248
Allied adjusted defense: 819
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2) – only 1.52:1 today but good to knock a fort down. The airfield is heavily damaged so the allies won’t be able to rebuild the forts from here.
Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
1564 casualties reported
Squads: 6 destroyed, 54 disabled – minimal damage to the infantry Divisions, but fatigue jumps back up to the 40s and 50s.
The infantry will let the artillery bombard for a few days to recover before launching the next attack. The Imperial Guards Div are about to start their crossing from Johore Bahru in move mode, so I may just wait for them to arrive before attacking again.
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 20 disabled
Engineers: 32 destroyed, 33 disabled – most damage caused to the 4th IER which is now shattered. It will move back to Johore Bahru to recover and take replacements.
Allied ground losses:
1998 casualties reported
Squads: 48 destroyed, 79 disabled – the 2 x Aus Bdes did well again but they are being worn down. Both were reduced to about 50 raw AV each.
Non Combat: 32 destroyed, 118 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 28 disabled
Guns lost 69 (23 destroyed, 46 disabled)
Vehicles lost 23 (2 destroyed, 21 disabled)
Units destroyed 1 – I didn’t see what this unit was, possibly a militia Bn or a small AA unit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wenchow (89,58)
BB Division 3 starts the next bombardment run from Shanghai. They should bombard two turns from now so I will hold off the next deliberate attack for one more day to try and coordinate. I want the ground attack to go in while the defenders ears are still ringing.
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 49695 troops, 507 guns, 218 vehicles, Assault Value = 2282
Defending force 42874 troops, 242 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1434

Ground combat at Sinyang (86,48)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 27831 troops, 273 guns, 78 vehicles, Assault Value = 1472 – waiting for 20th Army and a few more infantry Divs to arrive from the NE.
Defending force 61982 troops, 425 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1781 – I will keep up the daily bombardments to try and keep this Chinese force low on supplies by the time 20th Army arrives.
Japanese ground losses:
10 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Allied ground losses:
93 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 1 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Tsiaotso (88,42)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 53161 troops, 446 guns, 83 vehicles, Assault Value = 1869
While the AV ratio is tipping in my favour, I have 1 x IMB and 2 x detached Regts that would likely take heavy losses if I was to launch a deliberate attack due to the terrain in this hex.
Defending force 47993 troops, 315 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1380
About half of the defenders were forced back into this hex from Loyang so are badly beaten up. This hex is providing some supply to the Chinese defenders, but there are a lot of them so I hope they are eating it all and using the rest on bandages, leaving none for ammunition.
Assaulting units: HQ NCAA and HQ 12th Army are both moving here to take command of this operation and boost the combat values for the next attack.

Ground combat at 92,38 (near Chengting)
Japanese Bombardment attack
A deliberate attack (DA) is ordered for tomorrow. This is a Mountain hex so I am expecting to have to grind this out for the next week or so. The defenders should be low on supply but should have dug field fortifications by now. I plan to DA then rest for a few days before the next DA to take advantage of my troops being in supply, and just grind this allied force down.
Attacking force 43756 troops, 397 guns, 153 vehicles, Assault Value = 1480
Defending force 16353 troops, 120 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 472
Assaulting units: I’ve reviewed the “official” command assignments of these Divs and
1st Division – detached from 4th Army, which in this game means China Expeditionary Army Reserve. I will most likely allocate this Div to NCAA Reserve and use it next to help capture Tsiaotso.
26th Division – Mongol Garrison Army. Once this hex is clear, based on the summary that the Ops Staff presented to me yesterday, I am thinking about sending this Div to NW China to follow up the MGA Cavalry and keep it with HQ MGA which is now moving forward. This Division on its own may be able to capture Lanchow, but probably not Sining in the Mountains NW of it. The 26th Div would also have enough combat power to clear the far NW areas. I’m still weighing up whether the best use of this Div is with MGA, or if I should keep it with HQ NCAA on the Tsiaotso-Sian axis. As Sian is a secondary attack compared to CEA in the south, I am leaning towards sending this Div into NW China. I want to clear this Mountain hex and the railway line through it first though.
36th Division – 1st Army. Instead of moving directly to join HQ 1st Army on the high road to Sian, it will move to help capture Tsiaotso next, before staying close to HQ 1st Army after that.
9th Ind.Mixed Brigade – 1st Army. This IMB will stay an IMB for the duration of the war, as unlike some others it doesn’t get another Bde joining it to become a Div later. It isn’t needed for a city garrison role, so it will move forward and stay with HQ 1st Army. It may be used to provide flank protection by blocking a side road somewhere, or become the future Sian garrison.

Ichang expands fortifications to size 4 – that will do for forts at Ichang for now, as the Chinese have generally withdrawn to the W and NW.

Maloelap expands fortifications to size 3
Clark Field expands fortifications to size 3 – that will do for forts at Clark Field for now, as the allies have shown no sign of advancing from Bataan.

This prompted the IJNGS future ops cell to present an outline plan for an Indian Ocean raid. I informed them that there are higher priority tasks for KB for the foreseeable future, but I have asked them to work on it in their spare time. A deep Indian Ocean raid probably won’t be launched until after the Java invasion goes in, but a close range clearing patrol off the west coast of Java/Sumatra is possible once Singapore is captured and the minefields cleared. The aim of that patrol will be to support landings to capture NW Sumatra followed by the invasion of Java.
Chiyoda-1 converting to E13A1 Jake – this is the first size 24 Jake group.
This air group will stay on Chiyoda and take my best 24 >50 experience pilots from the reserve pool so that it can sail with a CVL or CVE task force to provide extra naval search. I only have about 6 more FP groups to upgrade to Jake on BB/CA/CL that are still at sea. I will upgrade those groups when the ships return to port and also upgrade the other 2 x CS-1 air groups as the next priority. After that, I will progressively upgrade the resized land based FP groups that are still putting recruits through the Naval Search Basic Course. Once trained in Naval Search, some groups will start flying operational Naval Search missions while most will continue their training on the ASW Basic Course.
Device(s) upgraded in 16th Division supplied from Manila – 47mm AT guns which should come in handy at Bataan.

Japanese ground losses:
1564 casualties reported

The infantry will let the artillery bombard for a few days to recover before launching the next attack. The Imperial Guards Div are about to start their crossing from Johore Bahru in move mode, so I may just wait for them to arrive before attacking again.
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 20 disabled
Engineers: 32 destroyed, 33 disabled – most damage caused to the 4th IER which is now shattered. It will move back to Johore Bahru to recover and take replacements.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Ketapang !!!
Ichang expands fortifications to size 4 – that will do for forts at Ichang for now, as the Chinese have generally withdrawn to the W and NW.
Jaluit expands fortifications to size 3
Maloelap expands fortifications to size 3
Clark Field expands fortifications to size 3 – that will do for forts at Clark Field for now, as the allies have shown no sign of advancing from Bataan.
Karachi expands port to size 6
New units:
2nd Raiding Regiment arrives at Kagoshima – Southern Army, to Thailand for use in Burma.
38th Field AA Battalion arrives at Hamamatsu – 17th Army, to Truk/Rabaul for use in the Solomons.
39th Field AA Battalion arrives at Hamamatsu – 17th Army, to Truk/Rabaul for use in the Solomons.
41st Field AA Battalion arrives at Osaka/Kyoto – 17th Army, to Truk/Rabaul for use in the Solomons.
82nd Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – SEAF, to Rabaul for future Buna garrison.
83rd Naval Guard Unit arrives at Tokyo – SEAF, to Rabaul for future Milne Bay garrison.
4th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Saipan – SEAF, to Rabaul to capture dot bases in the Coral Sea and Solomon Islands
5th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Saipan – SEAF, as above
7th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Truk – SEAF, as above
8th Indpt SNLF Coy arrives at Babeldaob – SEAF, as above
10th Special Base Force arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – Southern Area Fleet, to Davao then forward to help garrison Tarakan once captured.

Thanks. Very detailed.
Question: Is there a reason you're driving directly at the most built up defensive points the Chinese have created all across the map?
A few of your goals will be completely impossible in the short-term. While the Chines have supply Changsha will not fall if well defended. He's got 133k troops there in x2 territory with forts 2-4.
Looking at your map the key to breaking open the entire Chinese position isn't even reonned (no troop marker in yellow box) and you have nothing moving toward it.
The only spot you should care about right now is Pingsiang. it's a dot hex South of Changsha and once taken you have access to the clear hex crossing points through which you can bypass Changsha and move North toward your spot D. If he has nothing at D you're in luck. (I would have troops digging there).
All of that stuff at Wenchow and anything else you can muster from the Shanghai area and the elements of the 51st (plus the tank division you're assembling near Amoy, if that is what it seems like down there) should move up toward Changsha, but divert to Pingsiang. Take that base and move into the clear hex next to Changsha and pick the least defended of the two clear bases. Shock over the river, then head toward D (while ideally adding a unit to the NW of Changsha that could walk back in to open the hexside and allow most of your troops through, leaving a garrison of about two IDs and change to hold the LOC there).
Right now you're simply moving into the places the Chinese want to defend.

RE: 13 Jan report
Woah, loads of Chinese far forward in Sinyang. I hope you already planned to detach some small units (armored cars are great) to close the western hex sides for them. They will be cut off from their supplies and in time retreat east into the plains for you to bomb.

Right now you're simply moving into the places the Chinese want to defend.
Just to clarify, the arrows are showing where the Divs currently are.
My first aim was to form a front line and that is now done.
Until I had made contact and established a front I didn't know what the Chinese plans were.
I've only played against the AI before and last game it did a "full court press" which caught me off guard in a few places.
In this game, CS did press forward into Wenchow and did try to get into the Mountains west of Taiyuan, but he didn't get there quick enough. Everywhere else it is clear he is happy to defend and wait.
Now I can see which points he has chosen to defend in big stacks I can move and attack at points of my choosing.
I'm not going to attack Changsha directly. I have 4 x Divisions there right now. I would have attacked if he'd not reinforced it. I also have Pingsiang recently captured by an Armoured Car Coy. I was already planning the river crossing into (C) where you mentioned, but I don't want to show too many of my cards in case he reacts. That's the main reason why I haven't reconned (D) yet too.
Once I get 13th Army and the Tanks closer I will also move one or two 11th Army Divs out of Changsha to the crossing point as well. The "Tank Division" is at Sinyang, the box off the map is just showing what Regts are in it. I want to get those Tank Regts and about 8 x Infantry Divs down to vic Changsha to cross the river together and just bypass Changsha if he stays defending it. Once CS sees the movement towards the clear hexes west of Changsha he will have to choose whether to abandon Changsha or not.
I need to do enough in NCAA to convince CS I am still trying to capture Sian so he doesn't move his NE China troops backwards.
I also don't want to leave large pockets of enemy troops unsupervised in rear areas or they will try to break out and cut my supply lines. That's the reason for my current obsession with Wenchow and Tsiaotso as they generate supplies, but I'm massing as much force as I can before attacking them. If it takes me a little while to capture them that's ok, as I still need to capture Singapore and then move to cut the Burma Road to turn that supply tap off.
At Sinyang, I am going to try and drive those Chinese troops back with the Tanks and about 4-5 infantry Divisions. I could cut them off and destroy them but I don't want them reappearing at Chungking so I am going to try and bulldoze them back past Nanyang.
Anyway, that's the plan. China is slow going but I am enjoying it so far and am keen to see how this plan unfolds over the coming weeks.

RE: 12 Jan report
You can always cut Chinese off but not destroy them. Bomb them to drain supply, close hexsides, and they will end up a surprisingly docile POW camp until the end of Chungking siege. Chinese are really weak when low on supply and on offensive against fortified units. On the contrary, when you drive them off in a series of battles you risk their destruction and revival.ORIGINAL: jdsrae

Goes without saying that this approach requires a rather reckless opponent, plus your own meticulous frontline policing to prevent other Chinese throwaway units from opening hexsides to the camp
