Turn 91 + Turn 92
26 February - 12 March 1943

The Japanese agonisingly fail to destroy a British corps which retreats with 1 point left. In Burma, the infantry in Moulmein is reduced to a 2.

The same frustration in Manchuria, where 2 Soviet units were about to be destroyed but retreated.....

I think the high point of the German advance has been reached. The Germans are checked at Saratov and have to withdraw and I can't destroy the mech and tank unit further to the northwest.

25 March - 9 April 1943

I won't bother posting turn numbers anymore as something clearly has gone wrong there!

It's all going Peter Tong for the Axis....

I start with Thailand/Burma where, at least there was some good happening.

The British Tank unit that was seeking to outflank Mutagushi's forces in Bangkok, came a cropper. Sadly however, there was not much progress against Moulmein.

Once again my aircraft are grounded in the Soviet Union......

My forces manage to exhaust themselves trying to get to the approaches to Saratov. Aircraft can fly further south so I pull back my forces and concentrate on securing Astrakhan - which is just achieved.

Disaster all around for the Axis. I should have done what AllenK did in the other game and ceded ground in good order. Instead I've sought to hold on long after there was any chance of progress forward.... and have now paid the price....

In Manchuria, the Soviets have reinforced more than I thought they would be able to based on the other game. This was - it turns out - a dumb assumption.

Homma's forces have been overwhelmed and the whole pack of cards threatens to cave in. I manage to surround the mechanised unit that has taken Hisnking (and destroyed a bomber in the process), but the forces doing the surrounding are themselves in danger.

What a mess....

The forces in China are growing ever thinner - but I haven't given up the ground that allows this thinning out process...

I can't bring myself to withdraw - I feel like a certain Austrian twat that couldn't agree to order his troops to withdraw in good time and in good order. I hurt the Chinese a little this turn, but with every passing turn so the risk of disaster - as happened in Manchuria - grows....

My main forces are in the centre between Sian and Ichang. But my flanks are about to get hit.....particularly in the far north (out of picture) where the Communists are bearing down on my single army....

In a classic case of "let's fiddle while Rome burns", the SNLF are pushing forward in their own personal bid to create a Japanese "Co-Prosperity Sphere" [8|]. The 7th Sasebo claim the vitally important Andaman Islands.....[:D] But a big shout to the 2nd Yokosuka, who are holding firm in Mandalay and desperately hoping for some support....

Speaking of big shouts - I think a word should be said for these guys - who have been abandoned in the Marshalls all on their lonesome, but have held back the might of the USN for about 4-5 turns now.

In other news, the IJN eventually took out a US submarine that was causing havoc among the Japanese convoys.

...and so to Europe where Sardinia holds on... just

But in the USSR....

Apparently German anti-tank units are useless against Soviet mechanised units. The Axis forces have bitten off more than they can chew and the Soviets have been able to reinforce along the shores of the the Caspian Sea around Baku. The Romanian tanks are lucky to escape.

To the north, in another classic example of refusing to give in when the time has long since come to do so, Rommel and von Leeb press ahead between Saratov and Astrakhan. One of the fortified defences southeast of the former is destroyed, while a Soviet corps is pushed back northeast of the latter.

So...any good news from the Solomons area lately? That front sounds like it's been pretty quiet.

No, none at all. I have lost the gains I made in the Solomons and New Guinea. That little SNLF in the Marshalls is the last of the Mohicans.

The Axis are in all sorts of trouble as the Americans land in Belgium.

Not sure there is anything I can do about this. I make the decision (probably wrong) to keep units in western and northern France where they are. They may get cut-off but on the other hand if I move them then that just gives free ports to the Allies.

In for a penny... I decide to sacrifice the last of the Kriegsmarine in the channel - anything to delay things - even for a turn.

Giving up in the USSR isn't going to help any, so I just keep going. von Kuchler's troops destroy an army, and force another into retreat from Novgorod, as they continue to press toward Leningrad.
