[font="Times New Roman"]Two brigades of the 8th Australian Infantry Division were lost with the fall of Singapore, and Australian Prime Minister John Curtin expressed disillusionment at what he feels has been inadequate British support for his country's military contributions to the defense of Malaya and Singapore. The prime minister also hinted at doubt regarding Britain's promise to stoutly defend Australia itself from Japanese invasion.

"Without any inhibitions of any kind, I make it quite clear that Australia looks to America, free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship with the United Kingdom." Mr. Curtin further stated, "Australia is the last bastion between the west coast of America and the Japanese. If Australia goes, the Americas are wide open."[/font][center]

[font="Times New Roman"]Japanese warships and airplanes attacked Tarawa again today. Shep McCall of Amalgamated News described the battle.

"The enemy warships came first in the early-morning hours in what is now a familiar pattern. They stood well offshore and pounded this tiny atoll with large- and small-caliber weapons. The guns here on Tarawa answered back with defiance, and several hits were recorded on the enemy ships. Damage to the base was minimal."[/font]

[font="Times New Roman"]"After the sun rose, hot and humid, several swarms of Japanese carrier planes appeared overhead and began to pound Tarawa in systematic fashion. They kept this up for half an hour and seemed to concentrate on the airfield. But for all their fury, the actual damage to the lone airstrip here was minimal.

"Our AA guns barked back angrily, with a number of enemy planes damaged, and the small and dwindling number of Army fighter planes on Tarawa, P-40s, rose bravely to meet the enemy head-on. Vastly outnumbered from the start by Japanese Zero fighters, the fly-boys hardly made a dent in the subsequent bomber attack, but they fought grimly until the Japanese finally went away."[/font]

Japanese land-based bombers attacked the American base at Makin Atoll today. A further attack on Tarawa was also noted. The following report, filed by Shep McCall of Amalgamated News on Tarawa, provided details.

"The Japanese struck again today at these two tiny outposts of freedom in the Gilbert Islands.

"Makin Atoll, about a hundred miles north of Tarawa, was first struck this morning by two waves of enemy bombers from Kwajalein. In the initial attack a couple of Japanese bombers were said to have been damaged, as Army P-40s based on Tarawa raced to the defense. There was little damage done by the enemy in this first assault."[/font]

[font="Times New Roman"]"The second attack on Makin was twice as strong. Two enemy bombers were shot out of the sky and a number were said to be hit during the fray. Casualties to our defense were slight."[/font]

[font="Times New Roman"]"Then the enemy struck here at Tarawa. Again it was with carrier-based planes, and they roared in fast. Three of the Army's P-40s were damaged, with several enemy bombers killed or badly damaged in the action."[/font]

[font="Times New Roman"]"A second wave of Val and Kate bombers followed the first, and again the enemy suffered heavily from Tarawa's AA guns. And while casualties on the ground from these two attacks were not considered heavy, taken together over the past few days they are beginning to mount."[/font]
