The loss of Singapore freed up the Malacca Strait and Japanese LCUs...Bill just landed at Medan in northern Sumatra.

Koumac in New Caledonia became a level 2 airbase last turn but the sync issue caused me to miss this notification. This cost me the AVD Childs and the AK Port of Montreal to a Kate strike at Noumea as I would have upped anchor and split.

Koumac reaching level 2 really puts the ANZACs at Noumea in jeapordy and prompted me to hit the airfield with Halsey's carriers refueling off Norfolk Island seeing as Bill retired his carriers beyond sighting range (I was a little worried because large TFs are harder to spot than submarines and I was only vaguely aware of how far away the Japanese CVs were. The strike was not very effective despite over 100 500lb bombs being dropped on the dirt field and worse, the weakened CAP was insufficient to deal with the single squadron of Kates and Zeroes based there. (I really think CVs could use a "dawn strike phase" vs land targets because without it CVs lose their advantage of being mobile while land targets are not) Yorktown swallowed a pickle for the effort. Bummer. Allied Damage Control is off so this is a serious issue.

A massive enemy thrust, again without cover, is spotted approaching Tarakan and is hit by an initial airstrike. The sub pickets are basically inneffective.

Medan falls with hardly a whimper despite no enemy preparation and six months of fortification building. Knobs.[8|][:)]

Not looking good in Burma for Japan...last week the Japanese 55th Division was defeated at Moulmein and after a week the japanese have halted their air strikes against Rangoon due to heavy losses to the RAF and AVG.

The Tarakan invasion TF is getting pounded by MTBs stationed there and air units in the vicinity. The lack of any protective CAP over the TF is resulting in grievous losses to an already heavily culled Japanese merchant fleet.

Manila's defenders are finally buckling under heavy attacks after holding out against a six month siege. Again, thanks in large part to all the free supply generated at Balikpapan and Tarakan as no supply came from anywhere else.

A parting naval bombardment of Koumac yields poor results.

Well, I can't complain about outcomes too much in this game lately but I can't believe that I could not spot the 25-30 ship invasion TF, with flaming ships, steaming away just 120 miles off Tarakan but we can spot each others subs multiple times in one day. Bad luck but it would have been nice to get one more crack at all those vulnerable troop laden APs! Yep, looks like Bill postponed the Tarakan op.

The defenders of Manila stave off defeat with another display of desperation. I wonder if they can survive a 1337:1 attack?[8|][;)]

Today I spotted the retiring Tarakan TF and got a couple more bomb hits in for good measure. This TF has rerouted to Jolo, no doubt in order to set up an airbase closer to Borneo to cover the next attempt, but hopefully to save a few troops from a soaking if and when the damaged APs succumb to the bomb and torpedo hits taken a couple of days ago.

I have read that many people don't believe the game can mimic the long drawn out campaigns like New Guinea or Guadalcanal but the battle for New Caledonia is shaping up alot like the Guadalcanal Campaign. I don't know if it can last six months due to the fact that Japan still has massive carrier superiority and it is much earlier than the GC so Allied forces are nowhere near the late 42 levels. We shall wait and see however as warships require lots of fuel and Bill has yet to capture the SRA so perhaps he is experiencing an early fuel shortage, limiting the employment of his CV superiority. The DEI is not going to be a cake walk either this late into the game so perhaps Java and the lesser islands in the DEI may mimic the Solomons.

Nikademus did a really thorough examination of the assaul model regarding fortifications using the campaigns for Buna and Gona and if I remember correctly he concluded that fortifications can be reduced to easily. I'm beginning to think that while this is quite true, I think the surrender routines are more an issue. I'm referring to the vast differences one sees between how quickly units in a friendly base will retreat/surrender (anything over 1:1 odds adjusted by the fortification level) as compared to non base hexes. I'm no expert on land warfare but I feel that perhaps this situation should be reversed so that the seiges last longer in base hexes rather than open hexes at the very least, but better still, close that vast chasm that currently exists so that units need a higher set of odds in base hexes before surrender/retreat and bring open hex odds in line with base hex odds.

The Campaign for New Caledonia continues its' fever pitch as the Japanese counter attack at Noumea and suffer a set back. The 2nd New Zealand Cavalry Brigade was landed last week (the reason for Halsey's CVs being off Noumea) and this decision to reinforce the ANZACs is proving beneficial.

Got a present handed to me by Bill as his crack (sandwich eating?[:D]) 1st Paras make an unreconned banzai drop on Merak, the base NW of Batavia on Java. I was more than a bit surprised that after seven months Bill thought that this or any other base on Java would be unoccuppied or lightly defended. The Dutch imperialists will make short work of the Japanese as they have the Javanese in the past with some good old colonial hospitality.

I can't see Manila lasting much longer unless you allow me to move my units into a non base hex![:D] I'll declare Manila open and you can spend the next 3 or 4 months more pounding on the decimated units getting 1000:1 odds with no surrender.[8D]

Bill has finally started to plaster the bases in the vicinity of upcoming invasion sites before exposing his vulnerable transports. He has lost alot of APs to air attack because of inadequate preparation and air cover up until now. He hit Batavia today prior to the inevitable assault on Palembang.

The fiasco of land combat continues in China. I'm having difficulty establishing a stable front because of the static units placed in the front lines and exposed in CHS and the ZOC/movement design.

The ANZACs at Noumea launch another attack but achieve a mere 1:1 outcome, nowhere near what is needed to secure a retreat by Japanese troops, especially after losing men and inflicting nothing with a 1337:1 outcome at Merak vs isolated paras![8|]

Ground combat at 48,33 Screwed by mechanics, these Chinese pay the ultimate price. What is worse, I think some of these are disappearing in the final combats as they are not in the pipeline. I just know that the game is going to be crippled by bug repercussions by 1943.[:(]Too much work goes into this for this to be acceptable. Unfortunately AB's map can only go so far in alleviating the shortcomings of the free supply at resources dynamic. Not a single drop of supply was shipped from this entrepot to sustain Malaya or the six month siege of singapore. That came exclusively from the jungles of Sumatra and was converted into instand ammo, weapons, food, fuel.... Massive quantities have been shipped to India, Burma and Australia however.

I was just thinking that these rat runs are probably safer for IBoats than hanging near a port. You can keep the subs moving yet still be on the route thereby limiting chances for a successful ASW intercept.
