The Soviet Union charges Finland with artillery attack on border. The Soviet government claims that an "incident" had taken place on the Karelian Isthmus and demands the withdrawal of Finnish troops. In fact Soviet artillery had fired seven shells at the village of Mainila, on the Soviet side of the border, and then blamed the Finns.
Polish liner Pilsudski, under charter to the Royal Navy, sunk by U-boat.
1940 (Tuesday)
The Western Desert Force, begins Training Exercise No.1. This was a dress rehearsal for ‘Operation Compass’. Surprise was vital and so not even the troops involved were told of the rehearsals significance.
The half-million Jews of Warsaw, Poland, were forced by the Nazis to live within a walled ghetto.
Britain announces that after Christmas, bananas will no longer be imported.

Japanese 1st Air Fleet sets sail for Pearl Harbor, from its anchorage in the Kurile Islands. Commanded by Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, its consists of 6 aircraft carriers, 2 battleships, 3 cruisers, 9 destroyers and 8 oil tankers and has strict orders to observe strict radio silence. They await the signal “Climb Mount Nitaka”, the order to attack Pearl Harbor. (source 1)
All 6 of Japan’s first-line aircraft carriers—Akagi, Kaga, Shōkaku, Zuikaku, Hiryū, and Sōryū—steamed into history when they left the Japanese Kurile Islands (annexed by the Soviet Union in 1945) under the command of 54‑year-old Vice Adm. Chūichi Nagumo. With 441 embarked planes, the flattops constituted the then most powerful carrier task force ever assembled. The HMT Rohna, a British troop transport, is attacked in the eastern Mediterranean by a Luftwaffe plane using a radio-guided bomb, sinking the ship and killing 1,015 American GIs and 135 British and Australian service men. It is the largest loss of U.S. servicemen at sea in the war. The disaster is kept secret, as the Allies did not wish to disclose that the Germans possessed such an intimidating weapon. Consequently, the destruction of the Rohna will remain virtually unknown to the public for many years after the war.

Battle of Kolubara — Despite sustaining severe casualties, the Austro-Hungarian Army resumed attacks on the Serbian army and stretched defenses thin south of Belgrade.
A schooner carrying 50 German navy men from the landing party of the destroyed SMS Emden were allowed entry in the port of Padang of the Dutch East Indies, but under strict terms so the Netherlands could maintain their stance of neutrality during World War I.
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Lefkada, Greece, killing 14 people and damaging or destroying many homes on the island.

One airship struck West Hartlepool, killing four and injuring 11 people. Royal Flying Corps Second Lieutenant Ian V. Pyott of No. 36 Squadron shot down an airship over Castle Eden, killing her entire crew including her famed commander Max Dietrich. Another three-aircraft squadron led by Flight Lieutenant Egbert Cadbury shot down L 21 off Lowestoft, England.

The Finnish government deny that any incident has taken place, but suggest a mutual withdrawal of troops on the Karelain border.
Small scale engagements take place east of the Moselle.
Dutch liner Sparndam is mined.
Australia and Britain establish the Empire Air Training Scheme.
1940 (Wednesday)
Romanian extremists, “Iron Guard”, begin a murder campaign with 64 executions.
Royal Navy and the Italian Navy clash off Sardinia. The British Admiralty decides to send the Battleship Ramillies and 2 Cruisers from the Mediterranean fleet to reinforce the Atlantic fleet. They are to sail to Malta with a supply convoy, link up with Force H and then sail onto Gibraltar. Just as the reach the rendezvous point, Ramillies, the 2 Cruisers, the Aircraft Carrier Ark Royal and 10 Destroyers are intercepted by Admiral Campioni’s squadron of 2 Battleships, 7 Cruisers and 16 Destroyers. However, as soon as the Battleship Renown from Force H joined in, the Italians withdrew with 1 Cruiser and 2 Destroyers damaged, while the British suffered damage to the heavy cruiser HMS Berwick.

German Panzer’s only 19 miles from Moscow. Some armed patrols have penetrated in to the western suburbs of the city and managed to get a good look at the Kremlin.
The Tobruk garrison links up the New Zealand Division of the Eighth Army at El Duda. Rommel forces, now under constant attack by the RAF are forced to turn his forces around in order to deal with this new development. Gondar, the last Italian held town in East Africa surrenders to British forces after a tough battle. The Italian commander, General Nasi surrenders 23,500 men, while the British suffer 500 casualties.
Japan rejects the USA’s demand for their withdrawal of forces from China.
US Pacific forces put on war alert.
Italian garrison at Gondar (Ethiopia) surrenders.

Continuing their occupation of Vichy France, German troops take the naval base of Toulon.
As promised, the French sailors scuttled their ships rather than let the Germans take them over. The French scuttle 79 warships docked at Toulon as German troops enter the City, but four submarines manage to escape.
Army Group Don under Manstein is formed to relieve Stalingrad.
British troops are only 22 miles from Tunis.

The British 8th Army begins an offensive across the Sangro river.
US 10th Air Force attacks Rangoon.
1944 (Monday)
The Red Army breaks through the German-Hungarian defensive lines and captures Mohacs.
The German ship ˜Rigel’ is sunk. Over 2,570 are drowned, most of them prisoners of war.
B29 bombers from Saipan again pound Tokyo, but this time the Japanese reply with raids against the U.S. airbases on Saipan.
B-29s bomb Bangkok.
After 74 grueling days Peleliu was declared secure, although isolated pockets of Japanese resistance took many more days to exterminate. The battle for the island, ironically codenamed Operation Stalemate II, turned out to be the costliest amphibious operation in U.S. history: 2,336 Americans out of nearly 48,000 service members who took part in the invasion lost their lives. American wounded numbered 8,450. A staggering 10,695 Japanese perished on Peleliu and surrounding islands. Between 200 and 300 Korean and Okinawan forced laborers survived the carnage as did 19 Japanese soldiers.
Cordell Hull resigns as Secretary of State. Edward Stettinius is nominated to replace him

Affair of Miranshah (North-West Frontier of India) (28th/29th). [First outbreak on North-West Frontier of India caused by German intrigues.]
The German landing party that commandeered a schooner after SMS Emden was disabled at the Battle of Cocos left Padang port in the Dutch East Indies rather than risk having the schooner confiscated by authorities. The commanding officer left a message with German merchant fleet in the area to meet them at a rendezvous point away from Dutch territorial waters.

The commanding officer left a message with German merchant fleet in the area to meet them at a rendezvous point away from Dutch territorial waters.
