I like the Ki-100-II, it looks like a great bomber killer with SR1. Note that the Ki-61 upgrades straight through the line to the Ki-100-II at the end.

Thanks Obvert. Pretty definitive "skip it" on the Ki-93 and therefore the Ha-42 engine.

I look at the Nick-a and Nick-c as pretty much a wash. The Nick-c is a bit slower, -1 maneuver, but a little upgunned with a CL 37mm cannon vs. 2x12.7mm MGs. That looks like a good bomber killer to me, while the Nick-a looks better if it has to tangle with fighters. The Nick-c arrives in 43/5, so even without R&D on it you can get it in service by August of 1943, which could help against hordes of 2Es and B-17s *cough* Mike-in-New-Guinea *cough*. Though even the Nick-a is OK against bombers, and I suppose the George or M3 Jack is even better than the Nick-c.

Note: what does "TR-mounted" mean?

Turret Rear I think? That's what I always assumed anyway, not that it matters as Japanese planes don't hit anything defensively. [;)]

The 37mm cannon has only a 6 accuracy, and that should mean it hits about 1/20 as often as the 2 x 12.7mm machine guns on the centerline in Nick Ia version. I'd like to do some tests, as when it does hit things must go boom, but I'd like to see if it's bad as I assume.

The George N1K1 is a great bomber killer, but at service 3 not so good on islands with small bases. The canons give it punch but the CL MGs will hit often. The J2M2-3-5 are all good with 2 x 20mm on the wings but the best climb rate for the IJN until the Sam arrives. Numerous times I saw the Jack climb above sweepers and get good results even against some of the best of the Allied planes in a base with radar. It also lets them all get up to the bombers quickly when scrambling.

Yeah, the other thing on the Ki-93 is the 75mm cannon [X(] but with (I think) accuracy 6 as well. Not going to hit much, and the only other gun is one MG. Looks designed for CAS missions which don't work so well in game.

I need to digest all that info on planes. Makes me crazy.

Anyway, on to something that makes more sense to me - the economy.

As of 14 Nov 42, here is what I have in the Home Islands:

10.35M resources (9.9 month supply)
2.19M oil (9.9 month supply)
2.04M fuel (8 month supply)

Note that I use allocate only 50% of the fuel to the economy. The rest is for fleet ops. I suspect >50% is actually used for the economy because I don't pull fuel for fleet ops other than the merchant ships that work in the area.

If I convert the oil to fuel, then the total fuel increases to 4.02M points, so about 2M is available for the economy. That increases the fuel to a 16 month supply.

Note that this doesn't include fuel/oil currently in TKs on it's way to Japan. There is ~280k on it's way right now. There's also another 400k+ in the Singapore/Palembang complex. I'm just keeping up with shipping out the production there. A few more big TKs would be nice. Unfortunately, that's not happening any time soon. I am considering using my slow replenishment fleet to haul some fuel to the Home Islands. It's full right now and I don't expect to use it anytime soon. I may dump the fuel in Japan and send it to Singapore to refill.

Edit: The slow replenishment fleet has a 56k capacity.

You start with game with about 500K total oil capability (TK and AO). If you have 280K on it way from Singers, I think you may not be optimized yet. I'd take a look at it.

You have to allot about 75K for your fast AO to support the KB. That leaves you let's say 400K for the rest. For each run to the HI from Singers, Palembang can be done 3 times and Medan/Balikpapan about 10 times and Miri about 5 times. So, let's just say your feeder work 5x faster. I think you can put another 40K or so into your Singer/HI convoy.

By June '42 you should have another 25K of TK. And another 40K by year end.

Just my thoughts ...

Hi guys. Wow, it's been 2 months. Been out of the loop. I've had internet access but no access to the forum. Anyway, we've been playing sporadically. We're nearing the end of November 42. Lots of updates that I'll start tonight.

Pax, that 280k of fuel/oil heading to Japan is only the full hulls. The rest were heading back to Singapore. Here's a pretty good guess (I don't have the data in front of me) of how my TKs are allocated to Singapore for movement to the Home Islands:

4x Tonan Whalers (1 was torpedoed a while ago off Okinawa. She spent a couple months at Naha repairing what damage she could and now is a day or 2 out of Hong Kong to repair the major damage.)
8x 12.8k TKs
11x 11.6k TKs
5x 8150 TKs
That gives me ~330k capacity for movement to the Home Islands. That's just about keeping up with Singapore, which draws all the fuel/oil from Sumatra and Burma. In addition, I have some of the fast 18kt xAKs that have a 300 liquid capacity that haul resources/oil & sometimes fuel as well. Singapore and the region typically has 4-500k fuel/oil waiting for TKs to haul it, most of it in Singapore.

I also have a string of the 8150 TKs (Type 1 TM I believe) that are nearing completion that will be added to the above.

The rest of the war is plodding along. I have KB sitting west of the Aleutians waiting for an amphibious assault on Adak. They've been there for a couple of weeks and will probably sit for a week or so longer if necessary. I'd love to catch an amphibian TF. We'll see what happens. It's just a hunch that he's coming though. There is definitely a build-up of forces at Dutch Harbor. My subs see a constant flow of well escorted TFs heading there.

In Burma, his ground forces are still stuck around Akyab and Cox's Bazaar by my ground forces. My air controls the skies. He opposes me on occasion but can't wear me down.

In SE Fleet region, I'm holding my own over Gasmata, Shortlands and Rabaul but his bombers are usually unopposed over PNG. I've pulled most of my good troops out of there and he's eventually going to take Lae. He's moving slowly on the ground though. Not much I can do there against his 4E bombers with my Tojo IIa, Oscar IIa and A6M2.

I'm producing the A6M5 but they will outfit KB, with MKB getting the A6M3a and eventually the A6M5. The land based Zeros get the left overs.

I'm doing much better with my air R&D by managing my engine pools better. More to come later.

Thanks. It's good to be "back" but I'm still not back. Soon though, then I can get back to my normal lifestyle. Until then, still the sporadic ability to hang out here and blather on about the one fascination I have: Japanese production. [:D]

Well I would like to say thanks as I have just finished reading through this entire thread from start to end over the last 3 weeks. This has been one heck of a learning experience seeing how Mike has orchestrated the Japanese economy, not to mention all those others that have contributed so much to this thread like Pax, Obvert, and Lokasenna just to name a few.

I've owned the game from its release but have just now found the time to really dive into it and plan on playing a campaign soon as the Japanese, both against the AI and a friend. I've actually cut and pasted a good amount of info and various comments into a number of word documents titled as Plane RD, Engine RD, Ship conversions, and Prod tips that will be used as my guide to help me organize my own setup.

This has been a very insightful read not to mention very entertaining, one that I enjoyed very much.

So thanks again Mike and to the rest of you JFB's that have made this game such a worthwhile endeavor.

I am looking forward to the continuation of this AAR and wish you safe journey home Mike and hope you have a good retirement. Don't think though you will have more free time to game, I retired 14 years ago from the Army and just only now getting into this one :)

By the way, has anyone ever finished a full game through 46 in single day increments?

This is a great AAR isn't it! Kudos and thanks to Mike, and we hope to see you around again soon.

As for getting to the end, I believe Ersted/Aztez got there recently, ending in 46. Yeah, found it. Scenario 1 as well! [X(][&o]

[Ahh, but just checked. It was two day turns.]

Now I'm not sure if any have with one days turns.

Hi guys. Just talked to Ted and we're firing this back up. I got home from deployment in March and after about a month off, went back to work with the Dept. of Defense, my civilian job. I officially retired from the Guard on 29 July. It was an interesting time, but I'm ready to put it behind me. Anyway, I've been working, spending time with the family and trying to pare down a year long honey do list. At home I'm pretty busy, but I kept thinking of AE at work, when I couldn't do anything about it. Anyway, my daughter had her wisdom teeth out today and I had the day off, so I'm going to fire up AE and get things going. We may switch to the beta. Any comments on that would be appreciated.

It's good to be back among you goofballs. [:)]

Welcome back and thanks for your service. [&o][&o][&o] You've probably served others more than yourself over the years, but if you find yourself missing it, check out Team Rubicon if you don't already know about it, I bet they could make use of your logistics background. I don't have any skills or prior military service that allow me to volunteer for them, so they just get a check every month. Glad to see you back in the saddle with the game. Looking forward to your notes and observations as they helped me greatly in understanding the mystery of the evil empire....

I know the Team Rubicon guys (proud to say the organization I first worked for funded their startup [:)]). They are amazing.

@Mike - get the beta! It has many great fixes. I don't even know where to begin on that, except to say check out the change log in the first post of the beta thread. The last few (or last dozen) iterations don't have much to them, but taken altogether it's a big step forward.

Team Rubicon sounds vaguely familiar, but that's about it. I'll have to check it out.

My last turn entry was 10 Nov 42. I have notes through 28 Nov, but I don't remember any details. I'll give a brief summary but that's probably all it'll be. I figure it'll take a few days to get somewhat reacquainted with what's going on. I'll try to get a turn to Ted by the weekend at the latest though.

I just got an email from Ted. We've decided to stick with the last official patch. We'll switch to the beta when it becomes official.
