Hi all,

What worries me much more Andre, is the smaller picture of the 787 wins in flight in upper right corner (i.e. the wing flex on this aircraft is enormous [X(][X(][X(])!

A flapping wing gives a much more comfortable ride. A stiff wing (Such as in the Lockheed P-3 or Electra) gives a much rougher ride. As it was explained to me , "would you rather have the wing go up and down , or the fuselage (with you in it) go up and down?"[:D] Besides, there is nothing wrong with "flapping wings" Birds do it all the time. [:D]

Steve, I understand the physics... but still... 26 feet (i.e. about 7+ meters) of wing flap is very unsettling to watch...

Good morning tithe.

That's some amazing engineering going into those wings. I imagine that that *does* give a smoother flight, still it's got to be unsettling to the uninitiated. [X(]

ETA: Steve, turn's back to you now, right? I've lost track. I'm not expecting it back for the time being, per our discussions, but just wanted to make sure that you've got 'the ball'.

ETA II: How's the back?

I really don't know Andre. I'm sitting at a laptop surrounded by boxes and movers packing said boxes.

Not nearly as unsettling being in the fuselage and having it "flap" the same amount. [:D]

It's pretty normal to some extent, even an aeroplane without the feature will do it unless it has a very heavy duty spar. On the Tristar it was necessary to fill the outboard wing tanks in order to minimise the effects of the lift on the wingtips. Otherwise it was theoretically possible for a heavily laden Tristar to lose the wings as they separated from the fuselage.

We do something similar with the Lancaster as well in order to minimise the stress on the wing spars.

Wouldn't this loss of drag improve airworthiness and top speed of the aircraft?

For military aircraft, the B-52 and U-2 have very impressive wing flexing.

It's an interesting theory. On the one hand you've lost probably somewhere in the region of 15 tons of fuel plus assorted wing structure. On the other hand you've lost forty plus feet of wing structure. Potentially more if you're really heavily laden. Maybe a sort of Sports Tristar?

Rumours are that this is how Supermarine came up with the clipped wing Spitfires. [;)]

I'm going to my first 'proper' air show in many years on Saturday. Flying in style as well. [8D] Hopefully I'll have time to grab a lot of free stuff...

Oi-Dixie-don't set up shop on the approach to the runway, eh? Tornado pilot might decide to touch off the afterburners and go around again instead of landing on the piano keys. [X(]

Hi ya'll.

What do you all think about Puerto Varas, in Chile. We're kinda ex-patting and Puerto Varas is just the kind of place Mom will love. A large German community with cafes that serve baumkuchen and microbreweries that do it like how grandad did it in Bavaria. An incredibly beautiful and interesting place.

Mom will expat, because she won't want to lose her US benefits or passport. I have a choice; I can expat and keep my US benefits, or immigrate and get some Chilean govt benefits. Quelle choise !

Anyway, any of you been to Patagonia? Anyone been to Los Lagos region? Anyone been to Llanquihe? Here's a picture, Osorno's the volcano in the background. Calbuco ia a volcano just off the right of the picture.
