He most likely has a bunch, but no HQs in the landing, so none other than a Command HQ that could be in range.

They could also be planning for some of he major landings later, if he is planning for places on Honshu, Hokkaido or other deep bases.

One thing I didn't yet mention about the last turn that is now somewhat worrying, has to do with the massive stack suddenly at the holding hex near Toungoo. Dan had kept a lot in reserve or was just moving them around and up to the front it seems. There is a much bigger stack than anticipated now, of about 3,200AV. My divisions are dug in, and should be able to hold for a few attacks, but they need help fast.

I'd like to get a tank division in here since there are Chinese present, and see how they do. If I can get to 2,000AV quickly I should be able to stabilise and retreat on my terms. If I leave these troops they're now in danger of a massive defeat.

I have two more divisions in reserve and a tank division I can move, and I'll bring a lot more AA into the hex.

It is standard MO for your opponent to pack together multiple invasion forces within the same mass flotilla of ships.  One base will be invaded first and if everything is under control the other multiple invasion forces are then dropped off at the nearby enemy islands.  It would be consistent with this MO that the intention was to capture Ketoi and other Kurile islands using this mass flotilla of ships.  Finding stronger defences at Ketoi than perhaps anticipated he has dropped off onto Ketoi the other invasion forces.

Would not dropping LCUs prepared for other islands on Ketoi-jima cause massive disablements? It would be a counterproductive tactic.

I have never tested to see if an unloaded Corps or Army HQ in the same or adjacent hex provides a combat benefit. Would be nice if they did, as then you wouldn't have to accommodate their stacking capacity on the fly speck islands in order to get the combat bonuses.

I don't recall if they provide a combat bonus, but for tough invasions those things we know they provide are EXTREMELY beneficial.

That is in fact the case, and I still find them extremely useful.

You only get 3 in the whole war. That's only 1 invasion with the bonus every month.

Interesting discussion on the HQs and Amphibious HQs. I'm very curious if he had all of these units prepped for Ketoi-Jima. If so, that'a a lot (5 divisions + the tanks and engineers and arty). If not, he did manage to much of it on fairly intact, even with active CD guns.

The 23rd has little action. The KB makes it through the gauntlet of Allied subs it seems, though, and will be at Yokohama shortly. I'll have Kasagi and Aka back soon, and most likely won't do anything else daring until then.

On the 24th the Allies attack in the North and the South. Near Tougoo the big stack strikes and gets only a 1:2, but does get roughly even disablements, which works in the favour of the bigger army. Reinforcements are on the way, at which point the retreat will begin. This is time to consolidate Bruma around Rangoon for a bit, then back further around Moulmein.

At Ketoi the Allies get only a 1:3, which disables and destroys a good number of Allied infantry, engineers and armor. Nice! [8D]

This is still looking difficult, but results like this are heartening, especially after two major BB bombardments led the way.

That's the goal, but he's kept the DS within 1-2 hexes of Ketoi-jima with fighters successfully intercepting transports. The fields are also closed, so it's impossible now to use the more numerous and very effective Tabbys.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. Not only is it the end of the school year, with associated extra business to have grades in, clean up and make final arrangements for the year, but it's a bit of party time too! In addition, my daughter has developed a case of chicken pox. She's being a trooper so far, so fingers crossed.

Got away for a bit of dad time on father's day here, and in addition to turns want to do some quick updates.

Ketoi is getting pounded from all directions right now. It also looks like the Allies have installed a new division, the USA 6th division. One of the Aussie IDs was removed. So the CD guns are having minimal effect by now, the mines are being swept, the midgets have accomplished nothing, and today a LR CAP over the island was crushed. Not by the sweeps, but by the escorts of the bombers. Damn. That's late war Japan for ya. Even decent moves can turn out badly.

In the South the Japanese air forces make up for it though, and jump the constant daily milk run of 300+ bombers near Toungoo. Maybe 40 2E and a good number of 4E and fighters lost. So on the day the Japanese come out slightly ahead, and luckily, with battle over our troops, not many pilots lost anywhere.

On the 26th the CAP in Burma suffers but gets a few more bombers, and the Allies launch a new amphibious assault; at Port Blair!!

This is a signal, one of the red flags for me that indicate a moment to move back from central Burma. The large attacks on the Toungoo side are wearing the defenders down but it looks like they can't break through, which is good. Reinforcements will make it and all will then turn and race to Pegu. All traps in the big stacks on the Prome side will also run to Rangoon. Once there, the freshest troops will aim to hold as the tired and disabled move back to Moulmein. Then all will shift back and force the Allies to decide on whether they want to do a large stack river crossing. I'll probably cede Rangoon without a fights, which I hate to do, but it makes sense in the larger scheme of things. It's now about delay and getting troops out without being either pushed back or encircled.

On the 28th the Allies take Port Blair easily. I tried to fly in more troops, but to no effect. I'll be attempting to now extricate troops from all of the surrounding islands to shore up coastal defences. I'm also sending reserve brigade up from Singers by rail, and I have several units that can fly for a quick addition to defences along the Burma coastline. Forts and terrain are good there, and supply plentiful, but not much in place. That's fine for now as the retreat is on regardless.

The defenders at Ketoi-jima give another bad day to the Allied attackers. This one is surprising, as the adjustment was actually 1:5, even worse than previous attacks, and no forts reductions. The Allies lost a lot of infantry disabled and destroyed to very few all around from the Japanese. Keep it up!

Strike at Port Blair didn't fly, so he got that one for free. Oh, well.

On the 28th Corsairs mess up the CAP at Kushiro pretty bad. I'll change things up to see if this goes one more day, and fly at max height above the Corsairs. This means P-47s will do well, but if I can jump the gulls then those very good pilots will suffer.

Down South the reinforcements get in just in time and thwart another Allied attack. It hurts the Allies a bit more, and hopefully this will ensure the Japanese stack can turn and get out of the hex before the next one.

The CAP jump works on the 29th at Kushiro. Got about 1:1 with a lot of good Corsairs shot down. Even the old N1K1 is good when it's up high and diving. I don't do this often, as the P-47s and P-38s can top anything I have, but it's going to be fun if I can build a good number of Ki-83 to add to the mix. It tops out at 41,500, so will get over most Allied planes and at 437mph isn't too shabby for speed either.

The Allies try an odd tank only DA at Ketoi, mostly destroying a lot of tanks, but takes out disabled Japanese troops too. I think the tanks added in to a bigger infantry attack work better, but that's me.

On the 30th the Allies try small DA attacks against the retreating Japanese but both lead to the Allies taking a bigger hit. Especially the one near Prome, with over 100 devices destroyed and 500 more disabled. Nice.
