Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 10/10 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Ocean Island, detected base status shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

NW Australia: Amphibious unloading of supply and Australian 12 RAAF M/W Sqn (construction engineers) at Groote Eylandt dot hex base continues, most elements of 12 RAAF Sqn now ashore. Size 1 airfield now completed on Groote Eyland, construction activity continues. 4400 supply points ashore and on hand in Groote Eylandt.

10/10 Combat Events report entry indicates Jap C6N1 Myrt (CV capable recon) plane operating over Groote Eylandt. Pillager could be tempted to use KB against Allied occupation of Groote Eylandt. US Main Carrier force has been positioned off the NE Australia coast near Portland Roads, now moving into eastern entrance to Gulf of Carpentaria sea area near Horn Island. Four US patrol subs now operating in western approaches to Gulf of Carpentaria.

NW Australia: Amphibious unloading of supply at Groote Eylandt dot hex base continues, all elements of 12 RAAF Sqn now ashore. 4900 supply points ashore and on hand in Groote Eylandt. No reported Japanese air activity over Groote Eylandt or Wessel Islands.

No reported Japanese air or naval activity at Darwin. Poor weather conditions in Darwin base hex a likely factor. Supply point stockpiles in Darwin now at zero. I’m now attempting to draw supply overland into Darwin via Katherine-Daly Waters-Tennant Creek, supply required quantities at all four bases set to maximum 25000. From what I understand, overland movement of supply into Darwin is slow at best.

US Main Carrier force re-entered eastern Sea of Carpentaria area, spotted by Jap G3M3 Nell naval search plane (promptly shot down by CAP), Main Carrier force is pulling back to position just outside the eastern sea passage to this area – intent being to keep the Main Carrier force undetected as much as possible, also keeping the Main Carrier force positioned as distant support to a Milne Bay invasion force now in transit.

Australia: Transport convoy EX-87 (25 ships) arrives from Eastern US via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes six 14th USAAF air units transferred from Southeast Asia (5 fighter, 1 recon), 138K supply and 45K fuel.

NW Australia: US Main Carrier force re-entered Sea of Carpentaria on full-speed run to intercept detected KB sortie. Main Carrier force TF’s reached a position due E of Darwin but failed to spot or engage either KB or the small bombardment TF Pillager sent into Darwin (below). It appears Pillager withdrew KB (or parts of KB). No Japanese LBA air activity over US Main Carrier force other than naval search patrols.

Summary of Operations 10/15/44

Southwest Pacific: Allied amphibious invasion force reaches Milne Bay in daylight, shore bombardment action during PM phase. Six Japanese LCU detected in Milne Bay base hex, 5 units identified (Kure 3 SNLF, 86 Naval Gd, two flak regiments (152 AA, 42 Air Defense AA) and 13 Naval Construction Bn). Elements of two Japanese infantry divisions (1st Guards, 110th) also reported in Milne Bay. Other parts of Jap 110 Division have been reported at Tulagi and in the adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna. Jap 1 Guards Division also reported in Buna (bulk of the divisional LCU believed to be located at Buna).

Summary of Operations 10/16/44

Southwest Pacific: All LCU elements of Allied invasion ground forces now ashore at Milne Bay, 60K supply also disembarked. Some landing ships have fully unloaded cargo into Milne Bay and now starting return to Australia. 211K supply remains aboard ships in invasion force TF, unloading operations are continuing. Shore bombardment TF (now set to Surface Combat mission) and US Escort Carrier force remains at Milne Bay as close cover forces – US Main Carrier force retiring from Sea of Carpentaria now off Cooktown and available for distant covering ops if needed.
