The Jill raids went in first, followed by Judy sub-units that had lost cohesion but proceeded on alone.

The IJAAF will finally start to build their first purpose designed and built Night Fighter, the Nick-D.

These are a bit slow and you may get the 'can't catch bombers' once in a while when it come to the B-29's. Most importantly, from what I've read here is they will be limited by their lack of radar. Unfortunately this is true for most night fighters in general, but most severe when it comes to IJA NF's. Add to that the radar's don't appear until some time later, as their production dates are set for after most planes appear.

With all that being said, NF's for Japan are problematic at best. Reflects history.

I've only got the 1x size 30 factory on both the Nick-D and the Randy-C.
Due to the limited numbers of IJAAF NF units I didn't invest in more research factories for them.
The Nick-C on NF duty is doing a pretty good job of disrupting bombers and gets the occasional hit, so I doubt the Nick-D will do much better than it. Due to the limited numbers I don't expect the Randy-C to make much difference by the time it arrives either.

A number of Allied CVL/CVE task forces were spotted moving East yesterday, so it was expected that the CVs would follow them.
KB was tucked in one hex West of Truk with Georges on CAP range 1 to help defend them if the Allies surged West.
This indicates that the Allied CIC is not going to be tempted into low % plays.
Perhaps the Allies already have a deliberate schedule and they will move back to Pearl to replenish, before coming West again in a big coordinated multiple task force fleet.
KB will move to Truk to replenish while ADM Yamamoto (CF), ADM Kato (4F) and a bunch of VADMs get their heads together to figure out what to do next.

A very quiet day.
One small IJN tanker was sunk by an Allied sub.
One USN DD was sunk by an IJN sub.

No Allied movement is spotted to reinforce, so the 1st Army assault river crossing against 19th Indian Division is given the green light for tomorrow.
The entire attack force should move the final 4 miles tomorrow.

Helens were ordered to bomb 19th Indian Div today but none of them flew. Fingers are crossed that they fly tomorrow to try and soften up the defenders.

2nd and 3rd Tank Divs with 12th and 13th Infantry Divs will be the main assault force.
14th Div is ordered to move today so it will appear to be a follow up force, but it won’t be allowed to cross.
56th Div will remain at Silchar with 14th Div as the foot on the ground.
Most of the artillery and about half of the AA units will also cross so that they are ready to defend against the anticipated Allied Air Force counter attack the day after.
LRCAP with all available fighters will be set to try and shoot down some bombers, while 1st Army turns around and attempts to get back to Silchar before it is counter attacked on the ground.

TK San Ramon Maru collides with TK Meisan Maru at 63 , 87 – TK Meisan Maru has 60 float damage so must have been nearly cut in half… She’s on her own two hexes from Kuching, North Borneo. The rest of the task force is in the Kuching hex so it will send 2x Escorts to try and bring the damaged tanker into port.

The Peggy is the best, faster, better durability, imho although I haven't ever been able to seriously test it out. Randy is nicer but it comes a whopping 9-10 months later.

Nicks work much better than the no armor Dinah which take both their engines into the ground with them at an alarmingly high rate despite great pilots. I usually only allocate 1 factory to Dinah so that I can get the upgrade paths to reach maximum number of Army night fighter squadrons.

What does seem to work is mixing your radar less army planes with radar equipped navy ones...I think they work as pathfinders.

A number of Allied CVL/CVE task forces were spotted moving East yesterday, so it was expected that the CVs would follow them.
KB was tucked in one hex West of Truk with Georges on CAP range 1 to help defend them if the Allies surged West.
This indicates that the Allied CIC is not going to be tempted into low % plays.
Perhaps the Allies already have a deliberate schedule and they will move back to Pearl to replenish, before coming West again in a big coordinated multiple task force fleet.
KB will move to Truk to replenish while ADM Yamamoto (CF), ADM Kato (4F) and a bunch of VADMs get their heads together to figure out what to do next.

Shoot Tojo and offer better terms to the Allies!

The Allied CIC is on a short break so no turns this weekend.
That gives IGHQ a chance to go around the grounds and check in with the Theatre and Area Army Commanders.

This is the current defensive setup on the India-Burma border. From left flank to right flank:

15th Army at Chittagong has 105k troops and is currently facing 90k Allied troops. It will withdraw down the Arakan Coast and bring the Divs currently at Cox’s Bazar, Akyab and Ramree Island with it as it goes. It mostly has restricted Divs (grey backgrounds) so will have to march out. As it withdraws it will try to get 1x Division onto the yellow dash line in the Jungle Rough terrain. If the Allies march down the coast those Divs will be able to threaten to move in behind them, which could slow them down or force them to leave troops behind to keep their supply lines open.

11th Army is defending the Jungle and JR hexes with 10th and 19th Divs to deter the Allies from attacking Imphal from that direction.

1st Army will attack 19th Indian Div in the open tomorrow. 12th Tank Regt will withdraw to Silchar once the Allies enter its hex.

13th Army has 51st Div at Dimapur temporarily, but 51st Div will rejoin 23rd Army near Myitkyina at some point.

12th Army only has the 4x INA Regts with two each at Jorhat and Ledo.

20th Army has withdrawn from Rangpur to Kalemyo with unrestricted Divs (white backgrounds). Those 50s Divs will form a second line of defence to give the 10s Divs support if/when they are pushed back. The 4x Raiding Regts are all at Kalemyo, so now that 20th Army has arrived they will be flown back to defend Shwebo and Katha from Allied para drops. 56th Div has been temporarily detached to defend Silchar while 1st Army attacks the 19th Indian Div.

23rd Army will move to Myitkyina but has left 51st Div at Dimapur for now to defend in case the Allies launch an attack towards Ledo from Rangpur/Tezpur. There are no signs of that yet. The Allies seem to be concentrating on Chittagong. In the background, 5x Independent Mixed Bdes are moving from China to take over the three bases in Yunnan from 59th Div plus provide defenders for Lashio and Bhamo. They are still all a long way from arriving, maybe a month or two until they get into position. 59th Div will then be able to move to Shwebo.

28th Army has just arrived at Rangoon and will move to Mandalay to take command of 58th and 59th Divs.
HQ Burma Area Army will stay at Rangoon with 52nd and 57th Divs, plus the other 30s Divs on the South Burma coast.

The pre-war plan was for Burma Area Army to command the 50s Divs while the 18th Area Army would command the 30s Divs, but in practice they are probably going to stay a bit mixed up.

30th Div is at Bangkok but hasn’t combined yet.
31st Div is at Moulmein but hasn’t combined yet either.

HQ Southern Army is at Bangkok, 100% prepared for the defence of Rangoon in case the Allies try an amphibious assault to cut off the CEA on the India-Burma border.

HQ 2nd Area Army, 2nd Army and 16th Div are at Batavia. HQ 16th Army and 18th Div are at Soerabaja.

1s Divs are split between Chittagong and the Marianas.
10s Divs are split between the India-Burma border and Java.
20s Divs are concentrating in Malaya with 21st Div at Palembang. 23rd, 24th and 25th Divs are still at Jehol. 28th Div is at Nanning moving overland towards Malaya.
30s Divs will defend Thailand and eventually Indochina under 18th Area Army. 33rd, 34th, 35th, 36th Divs are on the Arakan Coast.
40s Divs have mostly formed up under 8th Area Army to defend PNG and Bougainville areas. 49th Div’s 64th Infantry Group is at Kavieng with subordinate units now on the map and moving to Fusan to board ships. They will arrive at Kavieng to form the 49th Div in mid Jan 1944. 44th Div will arrive on 4 Apr which isn’t too far away. It might move to Manus Island or to NW New Guinea, somewhere like Hollandia.

50s Divs are generally in place under Burma Area Army or detached forward to India.

60s Divs are C grade so are mostly providing garrisons in China.
61st Div is at Tokyo now 100% TOE and 52 experience. It is very low priority to buy out and will probably stay in Japan for the whole war, but it is preparing for defence of the Marianas. It only costs 1094 PP to buy out so if needed it can be bought out and moved.
62nd Div is temporarily at Jehol adding its AV to the Manchukuo garrison while it is there.

70th Div is C-grade so is the Truk garrison. 71st Div is B-grade at Guam.
The next three 70s Divs don’t arrive in Japan until Mar/Apr/Jul 1944. They may not leave Japan as PP might not be available to buy them out, but if the Allies haven’t moved on the Marianas by then the plan is to try and get them to Guam/Tinian/Saipan to boost the defenders there. 77th Div is only 82 days away from arrival, but it will most likely stay on Hokkaido as there aren’t many boots on the ground to defend there.
Guam currently has 7th and 71st Divs and 30th IMB which will become the 100th Div.
Rota currently has 5th Div and 31st IMB which will become the 102nd Div.
Tinian currently has 3rd and 4th Divs and 32nd IMB which will become the 103rd Div.
Saipan currently has HQ 14th Army, 2nd Guards and 104th Divs and 33rd IMB which will become the 105th Div.
2nd Guards, 7th Div and 104th Div are currently in the Marianas so may stay there permanently.

80s Divs will be used on Hokkaido and NE Area Army when they arrive in Apr/Apr/Jul 1944.
If the Allies try anything bold like a move on Hokkaido then the 2nd Guards and 7th Div could move quickly to this area from the Marianas.

90s Divs will be used to defend Okinawa. The 12th and 18th Garrison Units that form the 94th Div have temporarily moved to Iwo Jima to plug that gap in the perimeter as the risk of an Allied move on Okinawa this early remains very low, however they could make a move on Iwo Jima in early 1944.
The next two 90s Divs to arrive both come in Apr 1944 so the 93rd will be prioritised to buy out. The 91st is “free” as it arrives attached to 27th Army.

100s Divs were going to defend Luzon under 14th Area Army, but are now mostly in the Marianas. The first parts of the 107th and 108th Divs are at Manila and will wait there until they can form.

110s Divs will stay in Manchukuo to face the Soviets under 1st Area Army, with 110th and 116th Divs already in position.

120s Divs will face the Soviets under 3rd Area Army. 19th IMB which becomes the 129th Div is moving from China to Harbin now.

There are currently 1854 PP in the pool so 1x “A grade” Division could be bought out in a couple of days, eg: 1st Division.
The next priority is probably to buy out 2x 10s Divs to send to the Eastern DEI to allow the 2nd and 38th Divs to move.
2nd Div most likely to the Marianas and 38th Div to Mergui.

Later in 1944, the priority will then be to buy the remaining 1s Divs and move them to Southern Army Reserve in the Philippines.
That would mean the remaining 10s Divs won’t be bought out until late 1944, by which time the 80s and 90s Divs will be arriving so will be competing with them for PPs.

Something went seriously wrong with the 1st Army attack…
All units were following 12th Infantry Div but only 13th Inf Div and some artillery made the crossing.
The 13th Div shock attack got 1:3 odds and has a Regt disabled. That could have been worse.

12th Inf Div and the 2x Tank Divs ended up moving NW one hex instead of across the river…
They are now moving SW but movement is reset.

That leaves 1st Army spread across two hexes in clear terrain with its pants around its ankles…

What should have been a trashed 19th Indian Div is now a right Royal cluster…

At least very few 13th Div squads were destroyed. Fatigue is 27 and Disruption is 68 for 13th Div. Minimal disruption to the artillery and AA.
I was expecting every bomber in range to attack this hex tomorrow so was planning to set a big LRCAP, but now I have to cover the hex with 12th Infantry and 2x Tank Divs as well.

All units are ordered into Reserve (no pursuit) mode and set to move back to Silchar.
HQ 1st Army and most of the artillery have trucks and the 2x Tank Divs should make it back to Silchar after one day of being bombed.
12th has some trucks and motorised squads so might move quickly, but 13th Div is on foot so will not be so lucky…

To top it off, AGP Hotsukawa Maru sank in port at Kusaie!

LGEN Iwamatsu, GOC 1st Army, was just relieved of command. He only had a 50 something land skill but this was the last straw. With that sort of land skill he will probably sit on the unattached list for the rest of the war.
LGEN Kushibuchi with 70 land skill had the best stats of a LGEN on the General Staff so has taken over. Historically, at this point of the war he was GOC 28th Div before being appointed GOC 34th Army in Korea in Jan 1945.
